Application filed July '5,
This invention relates to improvements in sleeping bags. i y
The principal object of this invention is to provide means whereby the sleeping bag is protected during transportation.
Another object is to provide means where? by dust, dirt and water areexcluded from. the ends of the bag when the same is in rolled condition. I g
A further object is to provide means whereby the same protection used for the bag serves as a protection for the occu'pants clothes while lying within the A still further objectisto produce a device which is economical to manufacture and one which does not add materially to the cost of the bag.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description. 7
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure l is a side elevation ofa sleeping bag as the same appears when in unrolled condition and showing in dotted line the protector as the same may be used when occupied,
Figure 2 is a top plan view of Figure 1 showing the bag and protector in fully spread condition,
Figure 3 is a sideelevation of the bag showing the bag portion rolled and about to be encased in the protector the dotted lines oi? this figure show the position the protector is to assume, and
Figure 4t is a perspective vicwshowing the appearance of the bag within the protector.
At the present time sleeping bags and the like outdoor equipment is merely rolled from end-to end, straps or rope placedthereabout and then the same is either transported in this condition or further protected by in sorting in a dunn'age bag; Applicant has provided means integral with the bag whereby the same is amply protected during transit and further through this arrangement.
applicant has eliminated the necessity for an additional dunnage bag.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose 01'? illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates what is commonly called a sleeping bag which consists of an' elongated envelope shaped pocket which is 192a. Sfirial No. 2%,552.
properly padded so as toprotect the user against chill when resting therein. As the bag 5 forms no part of my inventionturther reference thereto, as far as construction is concerned, will be omitted. 7
To the open end of the bag 51 secure a strip of fabric 6 which is of su'liicient length to make one single wrapping about the bag 5 when the same is in rolled condition. To this fabric 6 I attach side flaps as shown at 7 and 8 each one of which is folded upon itself and stitched at 9 and 11 respectively, thus forming tubes through which the cords l2 and 13 are laced.
The result of this construction is that f when the bag 5 is rolled as illustrated'in' of the bag toward the top with the result that the strip of fabric 6 will completely surround the bag and protect the same. By
, Figure'i-l, the same is rolled from the bottom v obvious, It is. of course understood that Y the same construction might be employed with other camping equipment such as the tent without departing from the spirit of theinvention 1 i i It will thus'be seen that I have produced in a very simplemanner, a means whereby an article of camping equipment may be quickly and completely enclosed and protected against dai'nage which is not now pos- 'sible Without employing a separate dunnage bag which is bulky, heavy and causes additional weight far beyond that of applican'ts P device.
It is to be understood that the form of my.
invention herewith shownand described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim. i I
claim:-- i
The combination with a sleeping bag made from flexible material adapted to be Having thus described my invention, I
rolled into a cylyindrical body said bag being open at the head end, a fabric wrap per strip secured by one end edge portion to the open end of the bag and having a length 5 suiiicient to entirely surround said bag upon the latter being rolled U1) said stri bein o l i D '01. greater Width than the beg to lll'OV'lflQ side extensions at each side of the bag, the
respective side edge of each side extension 10 being provided with :1 draw string having securing strings, the Widths of said side extensions being suflicientto enclose the respective ends of the rolled bag when gathered by said draw stringsesaid drew strings thereby serving to draw the side extensions over the ends of the rolled bag and affording means whereby the several corners of the fabric strip may he attached to fixed objects to form a Weather shield.
In testimony whereof E aflix my signature.
WILLIAM ELLERY.
