IMPROVEMENT IN SCAFFOLDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,391, dated November 23, 1875; application filed October 21, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DELAVAN 0. PLACE, of Gloversville, Fulton county, -in the State of New York, have invented an Improved Reversible Scaffold-Jack, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof.

The object of my invention is to provide a scaffold-jack for use in the erection of scaffolds upon ladders, and, at the same time, adapted to be used as a support fora shelf or hanging scaffold, in connection with a ladder or ladders; and it consists in a jack or platform piece arranged to rest upon a round of the ladder at one end, and at the other end has hinged to it the hooked brace-rod, havin g the peculiar construction hereinafter particular] y described, arranged to engage another round of the ladder. Figure l is a perspective view of my reversible scaffold-jack, showing it folded together. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. showing it adjusted upon a ladder as ascaftbldsupport on the upper or outside thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing it adjusted on a ladder as a support for a shelf or scaffold on the under or inside thereof. 7

A is the jack or platform piece, which is provided at the end which is arranged to rest upon a round of the ladder with pegs a, which are set two upon each side, as shown, with suf- .ficient space between the pegs to permit the ladder-round to pass between them. The jack is thus prevented from slipping off of the round. The pegs are made adjustable by means ofthe holes 11, formed in the jack, so that the jack may be arranged to extend either a greater or less distance from theladder-round.

and said bent end adjusted in the slotted notch d in the end of the jack, with the bolt 0 passing through the jack and the brace-rod, as shown. The brace-rod may, by means of the hinge-joint, be folded down close upon the jack or platform piece on either side thereof, and the entire device he thus convenientlyarranged for transportation 3 and, as is evident, it is also reversible as a brace, and may be used to support the scaffold on the ladder in either of the positions shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Upon the end of the hinged brace-rod is formed the peculiar hook-eye f, as shown in the drawings, whereby the rod may be securely braced to one of the rounds of the ladder underneath the platform A, as shown in Fig. 2, or may, the position being reversed, be adjusted to a round above the platform A as a suspendingbrace, as shown in Fig. 3.

Now, it is evident that, two or more ladders and reversible jacks, as l have described, being used, boards or planks may be extended from one to the other, and a scaffold thus formed sustained by the ladder. It is also evident that, the jacks being reversible, a scaffold may be erected on the outside of the ladder, as shown in Fig. 2, or may be erected or hung from the ladder on .the inside, as shown in Fig. 5.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Asa reversible scaffold-jack for usein erecting scaffolds upon ladders, the platl'ormpiece A, having the adjustable pegs a, together with the hinged brace-rod B, having the hookeye f,as described.
