Application filed August 30, .1927. Serial no. 216,405.
and guiding device for spoolers and similar machines. Such a device is employed for cleaning or removing from the yarn or thread slubs and beads or bunches of fibre and for properly guiding the yarn in its passage through the cleaner tothe yarn receiver upon which itis wound. This invention has to do with that type of device in which the yarn passes over a guide rod and in which a comb member. provided with suitable comb teeth is pivotally mounted so that it may be swung into and out ofcooperative relation with this guide rod. 7
'One object of the invention is to provide a. construction, for determining the position of the comb member when in cooperative relation with the guide rod, which may be readily adjusted butwhich is so located as not to he accidentally or unintentionally ad- 1 justed. In the preferred form this construction is substantially concealed and can only be adjusted by a special tool provided for that purpose.
The type of yarn cleaner-with which this invention is concerned usually comprises a bracket clamped to the traverse rod of the spooler or other machine and a further obprojection rigid with the bracket and extending above the comb member which will afford a natural point to receive a blow so that an operative attempting to adjust the device on the traverse rod by a hammer or similar tool will not injure; the device or disturb the adjustment between the comb member and guide rod and so also as to protect the device against any spool or other heavy object being dropped thereupon. 40 The nature and objects of the invention will appear more fully from the accompanying description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the claims;
In the drawings: Fig. lis a front elevation of a yarn cleaner and guide embodying a preferred iorin or the invention. 7 A
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view in vertical cross section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 with an adjusting tool shown in' dotted lines and showing a traverse rod in cross section.
The device of this invention is shown'as adapted to be carried by a traverse rod 1 of a spooler, spinning or'similar machine in which the traverse rod commonly has a vertical reclprocating movement to lay the yarn throughout the length of the yarn receiver as it is being wound thereon. so In such'a dev ce it ls'necessary to provide means for cleaning or removing from the yarn any slubs, beads. or bunches of fibre which occur and which would injurejthe quality of the yarn if carried onto the re- 05 H ceiver. It is also desirable to provide suit-' able guidesfor directing the passage of the yarn to the cleaner. It is also necessary to prov de means foraccurately adjusting the position of the comb member of the cleaner with respect to these guides to insure the proper cleaning action. .7 I V In the device illustrated, a two-part bracket is provided comprising the main section 2 and the clamping section 3 and these sections are clamped together by a suitable clamping bolt 4 so as to hold the bracket firmly. upon the traverse rod 1.
The bracket has projecting laterally therefrom a main guide rod 5 and parallel with it an auxiliary guide rod 6 over which rods the yarn passes on its way through the cleaner. ject of the presentinvention is to provide a A comb member is pivotally mounted'on the bracket and provided with a set of comb teeth cooperating with the guide rod 5. In
the construction illustrated, this combmember comprises, first, a flat blade? extending generally parallel withthe guide rod and havin a rearwardly projecting ear 8 and, secon acomb proper shown as a flat plate 9 provided atits lower edge with a rowof 1 comb teeth 10. The comb'plate 9 is adjustably secured to the blade 7 by bolts 11 and 12, the comb plate pivoting for. that purpose on the bolt 12 and being provided with an aperture larger than the bolt 11. The entire oomb nexnberis pivotally mounted in the bracket by means of a stud 13 extending through the bifurcated upper por-.
tion of the bracket and the ear 8 of the comb member. This enables the comb member when inits normal downward position, as shown in the drawings, to stand with the teeth in the required cooperative relation with the guide rod 5, that is, parallel with this .irod and accurately spaced from this rod- When it is desired to remove the slubs and fibres on the comb teeth or to renew the comb, the comb member is swung Y The mounted on the traverse rod also presents a upwardly its pivot, thus giving ready access to the comb teeth.
It will be recognized that it is very impor,t2 1,n t that 'tlie; cooperative relation between the. comb andthe guide rod shall be accurately determined under all conditions and therefore it is necessary to provide means for adjustably determining with accuracy the distance between the row of comb teeth and the guide rod. It is importantalso that any adjustment provided for this purpose "shall not be altered accidentally or "provided with a conicalpoint and thus forms an adjustable abutment against which the comb ineniherrests whendn its lowermost It will be seen I v sta ntia lly concealed and in a positionwhere position. This abutment, therefore, accurately determines the cooperative position of the comb member with rspectto the yarn uide. V 7
that this set screw is subit cannot. be accidentally" turned, where it cannot struck or hit' accidentally and where an unauthorized person would be unlikelyto tamperwith it.
This set screw is adjusted preferablyby a special tool, shown indottedlines inF-ig; 8, which may be passed through a small opening' lG-entering the recess 14: axially thereof from therear 0t the bracket. This openmg is smaller thantherecess and the set screw 15 still substantially concealed from View.
-The set screw is shown as provided at its "rear end'with a'polygonalrecess 17 to receive the polygonal end ota well known W11 of olsuoh "asillustrated in d tt d lines in Fig. 3, r I
jAs already"n ited, a yarn cleaner device of? th s type which is clamped on a traverse rod maybe accidentally altered in its position on the traverse rod by-beingstruck by aspool or other object falhngifrom above or an operatire may'seek to adjustit onthe traverse rod by poundi 1g w th ahanimer or other-object.
bracket of this invention Vwhicli is portion which" extends vertically" from its seat on the traverse rod'and terminates man integral rigid projection 18 above the comb member. "The top of this projection thus affords a naturalpoint for receiving a blow comb member with respect to the bracket.
This portion of the bracket with this projection thus protects the comb member and other'parts of the device from injury and from maladjustment. I V
a The invention as a whole, therefore, presents 'aform of yarn'cl eaner and guide in which both the construction and the adjust ment, of the device are well protected.
Having thus described the inventiomwhat is claimed as new, and des'ied to lie-secured by Letters Patent isz' l.- A yarn, cleanerand guide for spoo'lers and similar machines comprising a bracke" a guide rod on the bracket'over which the yarn passes, a-rcomb member 'pivotally mounted on the bracket to swing" into" and out of cooperative relation withthe guide" rod a threaded recess in the bracket opening at the face of the bracket adjacent the comb member, an opening in the bracket'of smaller diameter than tae recess and entering the bracket and a set screw threaded into said recess and projecting rtherefrom at' the face the bracket to for-man adjustable abutment for the comb member when in cooperrecess axially'thereoffrom the rear of the ative relation with the guiderod, the opening in axial alignmentwith the recess acting substantially ta conceal the set screw while permitting it to be adjusted by a special tool inserted through said opening.
A yarn cleaner and guide for spoolers and similar machines comprisinga bracket adapted to be mounted on a traverserod a comb, member mounted on the bracket, a portion ofthebracket extending vertically upward fronrits seat on the traverse rod and terminating inan integral rigid pro jection well abovethe combmember to atferd a natural point; for receiving a blow from above and transmit-tingthe force of the blow', directly in a right' line through said portion to the traverse rod without disturbing the adjustniei lt orposition oi tlie'comb me'mberrfitli respect to the bracketand so protecting the comb member and other parts of the device from pounding or blows.
In nywhereof; I have signed my name to this specification. j V
