AUTOMOTIVE APPLIANCE.

The present invention relates to an im proved automobile appliance and has more particular reference to an attachment adapted to containan automobile license .5 card, the same being constructed to normally conceal the printed matter on the card, but to permit it to be arranged readily in an 1 extended visible state.
Briefly, the invention comprises a spring wound roller to which the flexible card or tag is attached, a casing for the roller and card, retaining linkage for holding the card in extended display position and combined brace and hand grip carried by the outer end of the card, the linkage being connected with this and with the casing.

Figure 1 is aside elevational view of an appliance or device constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the same in use, with the flexible card or tag extended to render the printed matter clearly visible.

Figure 3 is a view like Figure 1, with the card wound upon the roller and with the retaining links folded.
Figure 4 is a sectional view through the roller and easing structure.
Figure 5 is a view of the spring roller and its casing.
Figure 6 is a sectional view of the outer end portion of the card or tag, with the reinforcing member attached thereto.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals, it will be observed that the numeral 7 designates an open ended tubular or cylindrical casing, having closing caps 8 at its opposite ends. The caps embody flanges 9, (see Figures 1 and 5,) which fit telescopically in the ends of the casing. Also as shown in Figure 5, each cap is provided with a pintle or journal 10, fitting into a bearing in oneend of a spring actuated roller 11. The roller is provided with saring retaining clips for the 'flexible sheet like tag or card 13. This assumes the position shown in Figure 4, and extends out through a slot 14, in one side of the casing.
Referring to the opposite end of the card, it will be observed that this carries a reinforcing member. The member is in the form of a hollow open ended tube 15, having a long slot in one side, and a short slot in a diametrically opposite side. The card is provided with a tab extending through 1928. and beyond the short slot. This portion of the card is pulled through the slot and held in place by a removable retaining pin 17, fitting in the tube and provided with a head 18. \Vith this arrangement, the end portion of the flexible card will pass through the slot'in the tubular rod 15 and the pin 17 is shoved down so that it occupies the relationship shown in Figure 6.
It is to be noticed that a bracket 19 of suitable construction is fastened to the easing 7 and a link 20 is pivoted to this link 20 carrying a stop 21. Then cooperable with the stop 21 and pivotally connected to the link 20 is the second link 22, which is in turn carried by the rod member 15, through the medium of a pin and slot connection as shown in Figure 1.
The purpose of this arrangement is to permit the link to be extended into the relationship shown in Figure 1, to hold the card in extended position to render the printed matter clearly visible.
It is yet to be mentioned that I provide a substantially channel like attaching device 23, for the casing 7. This is rigidly fastened to the intermediate portion of the easing 7 and is attached to the support 24, which may be any appropriate rigid part of the automobile.
Under normal conditions, the card is wound upon the spring roller and occupies a concealed position within the casing 7. At this time, the links 20 and 22 are folded as shown in Figure 3, whereupon the rod member 15 is held in close proximity to the casing. This member, however, can be grasped and pulled outwardly, unwinding the card, and permitting it to be arranged in the extended position shown in Figure 1, the same being held here by the action of the links.
From the foregoing description and drawings, it will be seen that I have evolved a simple and inexpensive device, which will fulfill the requirements of an article of this class in a satisfactory manner; The simplicity is such as to make it unnecessary to embody a more detailed description.
Minor changes in shape, size, and rearrangement of parts coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to, if desired.
I claim:
As a new product of manufacture, an automobile appliance of the class described comprising an open ended cylindrical slotted casing, caps fitted 0n the ends of the casing and provided with internal journal pins, a spring Wound roller located in' said casing having bearings at its opposite ends receiving said journal pins, spring clips carried by the roller, a vehicle driversperxnit in the form of a flexible date carrying sheet extending through the slot and attached at its inner end to the clips on said roller, said sheet being adepted'to Wind upon the roller, a tubular slotted rod, the outer end portion of said sheet extending through the slot in said. rod, and e sheet retaining pin extending through the central portion of the rod and engegeable with the sheet to hold the rod'in position thereon, a bracket attached to said casing, a link pivotally connected with said bracket and provided at one end with a stop, a second link pivoteliy connected to the last named end of the first named link and having pin and slot connection with the intermediate portion ofsaid rod. 7
