IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED BURNISHERS AND SEAT-WHEELS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,358, dated November 23, 1875; application filed October 28, 1.875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALONZO U.'ESWORTHY and THoMAs T. ESWORTHY, both of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Oombined Bnrnisher and Seat-Wheel for Boot and Shoe Heels, 850.; and we dohereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, suflicient to enable others skilled. in the art to which our invention appertains, to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which the figures are side views of the device embodying our invention.

Our invention consists of a burnishing-iron, provided with a seat-wheel supported in a frame hinged or pivoted to the iron, and relatively adjustable therewith. It also consists of a latch or catch for holding the seat-wheel elevated from the burnishing-iron.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a burnishing-iron, which receives rotary reciprocating motions, so as to traverse the heel of the boot or shoe, and operate thereon, as is well known. To the iron A, there is hinged by an arm or frame, B, a seat-wheel, G, with whose use shoemakers are familiar, and bearing against the arm or frameB is a spring, D, one end of which is secured to the iron A, for the purpose of throwing down the seat-wheel to an operative position, as shown in Fig. 2. E represents a spring latch or catch, which is hinged to the iron A, and adapted to engage with a shoulder, F, on the hinged arm or frame B, when the seat-wheel is elevated as shown in Fig. 1. Cords, chains, or other attachments shown in dotted lines, are connected to the arm or frame of the seat-wheel and the catch E, so as to operate the same, as will be stated. The seat-wheel is elevated and held by the catch E. The iron A being rotated,
and the boot or shoe presented thereto, the
burnishing of the heel is accomplished, the operation of which need not be set forth.
The workman then operates a treadle or other means for drawing the catch E clear of the shoulder F on the arm or frame'B, and immediately the seat-wheel drops to an operative position, and as the burnishing-iron continues its reciprocating motions, the seatwheel will be carried thereby, and run over the heel, thereby imparting its characteristic features to the heel. The workman then raises the seat-wheel, the catch E engages with the arm or frame B, and the bnrnishingiron is ready to work on the next heel presented. -In order to keep the seat-wheel to its work, and ease the motions thereof, the stock of the wheel will be hinged to the arm or frame B, and aspring, a, secured to the latter so as to bear against said stock.
It will be seen that the burnishing-iron is made to carry the seat-wheel, and its reciprocating motions are imparted thereto, so that the heel may be successively subjected to the seat-wheel and the motions of the burnisher utilized therefor, the operation of the seatwheel at a different period being prevented, and harsh hand-work being obviated.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A burnishing-iron provided with a seatwheel, supported in a-frame hinged or pivoted to the iron, and relatively-adjustable therewith by means of springs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The holding-catch E, in combination with the burnishing-iron A, and seat-wheel 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
