Description
LA. Z. BODA. 'WOVEN WIRE MATTRESSES.
NQ 17,334 PatentedNov. 23,1875.
N.PETERS, FHOTU-LITHOGAPHER WASHHKGTDN D C vUNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcEo ABIA Z. BODA, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM J. BODA, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WOVEN-WIRE MATTRESS-ES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,334, dated November 23, 1875; application filed August 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, ABIA Z. BODA, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Woven Wire Mattresses 5 and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specifition, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the web ot' a wire mattress constructed in accordance with my improved method, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged portion of two spirals at their points of union.
Letters ot' like name and kind refer to like parts in each ot' the figures.
The design of my invention is to-increase the elasticity, strength, and durability of a woven-wire mattress; and to this end it consists, as a new article of manufacture, in a Woven-wire mattress composed of spiral coils, which are connected together at suitable points by rings or links that engage with contiguous coils, and are placed with reference to laterally-adjacent links, so as to break joints therewith, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specited.
In the annexed drawing, A and A represent spiral coils of Wire, composed, preferably, of three strands each, which are arranged in parallel lines, and at their ends are secured upon a suitable fra-me, and distended in the usual manner. At suitable intervals between their ends each pair of coils, A and A, are connected together by means of metal links B and B, each of which latter pass through two coils,
fa and a, of each of said spirals, as shown in Fig. 2. Each pair of spirals thus connected is in a like manner connected with the adjacent coils upon each side, the links B and B employed for such purpose being arranged so as to break joints with the laterally-adjacent links upon each side, as shown in Fig. l.
As thus constructed, the web is equally strong and elastic in all directions, and any considerable strain thrown upon it at one point isso transmitted to the lateral portions as to cause each spiral coil to sustain its proportion ot' the load.
In consequence ot the means employed for connecting together the spiral coils, and of the relative arrangement of the links, a degree of elasticity is secured in a lateral direction which is substantially equal to that possessed by the web in a longitudinal line.
It' desired, the links may be omitted, and rings employed in their stead.
Having thus fully set forth the nature a-ud merits of my invention, what I claim is As anew article ot' manufacture, a wovenwire mattress composed of spiral coils A and VA, which `are connected together at suitable points by rings or links B and B, that engage with contiguous coils, and are placed with reference to laterally-adjacent links, so as to break joints therewith, substantially as and for the purpose speci ed.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of August, 1875.
ABIA Z. BODA. Witnesses:
GEO. S. PEINDLE, E. T. PRINDLE.
