IMPROVEMENT lN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,279, dated November 23, 1875; application filed October 13, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN DENIS LAWLOR, of the city of Montreal, in the county of Hochelaga, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, manufacturer, have invented a new and useful Improvement on the VVashing-Machine secured to me by Letters Patent in the United Stateson the 13th day of July, 1875,.and registered under the number 165,421, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing.

The object of my improvement is to provide a simpler and better means of regulating the roller B of my washing-machine, so as to enable me to do away with the various contrivances connected with the standard D of my original invention.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my original invention, one side being cut away to show the internal arrangement of the different parts. Fig. 2 represents simply one of the standards D, on which my improvement is located.

By comparing the standard D on Fig. 1 with that shown in Fig. 2 it will be seen that I have done away with the pins 6, and spring m and block b, and substituted a much better and simpler mode of regulating the roller.

The spring-rod m instead of being fixed in a block, b, is set securely in the block in which the shaft S is journaled, and its upper portion is provided with a thread, on which a thumb-screw is placed. When this thumbscrew, as represented at K, is turned to the right, the spring-rod m is raised, causing the block in which the shaft S of the roller B is journaled to rise, thereby raising the roller, which it becomes necessary to do when it is desired to adjust the machine for doing heavy washing-such as sheets, blankets, 850. When these require any extra amount of pressure it does not become necessary to lower the roller,

as its own weight adds considerably to that of the tension of the spring.

When it is desired to wash small light pieces the thumb-screw K is reversed, and the block in which the shaft S is journaled is lowered, carrying, of course, the roller with it.

Having thus described the nature of my improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a washing-machine, constructed as hereiubefore described, the spring-rod m constructed with a screw-thread on its upper end, provided with the thumb-screw K, and connected at its lower end to the block in which the shaft S of the washing-roller is journaled, substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
