W. P. JOHNSON COMBINATION REFRIGERATOR AND POULTRY CAR Filed Jan. 30, 1928 Patented Feb. 1 I UNITED STATE WALDO r. .ionnson,
OE CHICAGO, I ILLINOIS.
oomamarxon REFRIGERATOR POULTRY can.
Application and January so, 1928. Serial No. 250,481.
' This invention relatesto improvements in combination refrigerator and'ponltry car and is shown in the accompanying drawings.
One of the features of m invention is the provision of a car adapted or carrying poultry, a part of said car being insulated for purposes to be hereinafter pointed'out' Among the features of my; invention is the making of such a car with 'a poultry compartl0 ment at one end, a refrigerator con'ip'artment at the other end, and an attendants state room in the centerof the car between said compartments. I In the shipping of poultry it'frequently is necessary or desirable to carry perishable feed or other products in the same car and keep the same cool to prevent spoiling. This can be accomplished by the use of my improved car. Also, at times, in hot weather it i 'is'necessary ordesirable 'to cool-the poultry.
This can be accomplished by opening the 'doors from the refrigerator and poultry com-- partments leading into the state room and thus permit cold air to flow from the refrigorator compartment into the poultry con partment.
'Also, sometimes in cold weather it is necessary or desirable to have a. part of the car that can be kept warm. This can be 'acconr.
39 plished by closing'the door from the state room to the poultry'compartment, opening the door between the state room and the re-- 4 frigerator compartment and permit heat to flow from the state room into the refrigerator compartment. p
Other features and advantages of my invention will appear more fully as I proceed with my specification.
In that form ofdevice embodying the features of my invention shown in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view, Fig. 2 is a view taken as indi cated by the line 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a view taken as indicated by the line 3 of Fig. 2]
As shown in the drawings, the car is of the 1 ordinary box car type in which, 10 indicates the floor and 11 the roof.
The car is divided primarily into three compartments as indicated by A. B, and O.
i A is the poultry compartment which may be of the usual arrangement with-the center aisle 12-and tiers of poultry coops 13 on each side. Thestate room B'in the center. of the car'is preferably provided with a stove 14, and 15 and 16 indicate the sliding side doors of the car leading to the stateroom. 17 indicates a door leading from the aisle 12 into the state room and 18 indicates another door leading y, from the state room B to the refrigerator compartment O.
The refrigerator compartment is provided with thick insulated walls 19 of any well known construction, and'the door 18 is likewise insulated. One of the side walls 19 is provided with heavy-insulated doors 19*, as
shown. The refrigerator compartment is also provided at one end with a suitable ice bunker 20 having a grating 21 near the bottom and a water drain 22 below. 23 and 24 indicate ports leading from the top and bottom res ectively ofthe ice bunker to the main part 0 the compartment O to permit circulation of air for refrigeration purposes.
-The top of the car is equipped with 'two funnel-shaped rotatable ventilators 25 and 26 respectively at the two ends as shown. The bottom of each of these ventilators is prothese ventilators leads to the poultry compart-menu It will be seen that by turning these ventilators in suitable directions air may be caused to circulate through the car as desired, depending upon the direction of the wind and movement of the car. For example, the doors 17 and 18 may be left open and the ventilators 25 and 26 adjusted so that the movement of the car will cause air to flow from the compartment G into the compartment A to cool the poultry.
, While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes,"therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the in vention disclosed in the appended claims, in
vided with a flange 26 held beneath an overhanging collar 27 to permit rotation. One of "which it is my intention to claim all novelty in my invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art. g V i 1' What I claim is new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A railroad car of the box car type having apoultry compartment at one end with a central ,aisle having tiers of poultry coops on each side. a refrigerator compartment at the other end, and an attendants state room between said compartments, doors leading from said attendants state room to the poultry compartment and the refrigerator compartment, and means for causing flow of air from the refrigerator compartment through the compartment and the refrigerator compart ment, and means for causing flow of air from the refrigerator compartment through the state room into the poultry compartment and vice versa,"said means including rotatable ventilators on top of the carat theen'ds thereof.
p In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of January, 1928.
'WALDO P. JOHNSQN.
