Description

Patented Feb. 19, 1929 UNITED STATES JESSE MEYER, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
I METHOD OF TREATING FELT HATS.
No Drawing.
My invention relates to hats and more particularly to soft felt hats for womens Wear; the object of the invention being to provide a rain-proof hat of this type and preferably one having a smooth and glossy finish.
The invention consists in the method of treating the felt during the formation of the hat as hereinafter described and as more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the manufacture of felt hats, in accordance Wth my invention, the felt bodies, preliminary to shaping under heat and pressure, are subjected to an application of cocoanut oil which may be allowed to soak into the felt, but which is preferably incorporated therein under heat and pressure, preferably during the shaping operation. This oil is readily taken up by the felt and renders the same '20 rain-proof or substantially s0.
Following the above operation, cocoanut butter is then applied to the surface of the hat in a thin layer, which is caused to become incorporated into the felt adjacent the surface thereof by subjecting the felt to further heat and pressure, after Which the hat is subjected to a final bufling operation, under Which the butter gives a smooth and glossy surface to the hat.
Application filed August 11, 1928. Serial No. 299,110.
As the result of the described treatment, the finished hat is rendered Waterproof or substantially so and at the same time its appearance is rendered distinctive by the smooth and glossy finish given to it.
What I claim is:
1. The method of treating felt hats comprising the incorporation of cocoanut oil into the felt body, shaping the body into hat form applying cocoanut butter to the surface of the shaped hat, and then subjecting the hat 40 to pressure.
2. The method'of treating felt hats comprising the incorporation of cocoanut oil into the felt body, thereafter applying cocoanut butter to the surface of the body, and then subjecting the hat to a buffing operation.
3. The method of treating felt hats comprising the incorporation of cocoanut oil into the felt body, shaping the body into hat form under heat and pressure, applying cocoanut butter to the surface of the shaped hat, and thereafter subjecting the hat to further heat and pressure.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JESSE MEYER.
