c NITED? STAT -s PATENT Tom-emf ames J. SULLIVAN, 0F .ABAIYAHOE COUNTY, co o ADoi J PACKAGE" non. TOILET AND LIKE ARTICLES AND FASTENING nnANs THEREFOR.
' lA ppli c ation filed November 18, 1927. Serial No. 234,151.,
This invention relates to containers of sanitary and toilet articles and the like 'andhas for an ob ect-to providea handy container or kit for sanitary, toilet and other articles,
which container or kit shall be simple and compact, economical as to cost and handy and efllcient for use.
A further object is to provide in such a container improved combined fastening and suspending means. p
Otherobjects will appear from the following specification and claims as illustrated in the'accompanying drawing in whichlike reference numerals indicate corresponding parts throughout andin which Figure I is a View of thecontainer in perspective with top and bottom partly open and contained articles indicated in dotted lines.
Figure II is a vertical, central, longitudinal section and,
Figure III is. a vertical transverse section.
This article is primarily intended for use of automobilists, campers and hikers but is 7 adapted for use under any circumstances where the provision of toilet, sanitary and other articles in compact form for transportation and handy access for useare desired.
The kit or container 1 may be made of any suitable material such as a good grade of cardboard or other light reasonably substantial,
material. A partition shelf 2, dividing the container into upper and lower compartments, is mounted through slots 3 in the ends I of the container. The shelf is preferably made of light metal, the lips or flanges 4 being formed by bending the ends of the shelf to a position at right angles with the shelf and in which position the lips or flanges engage the walls of the container and hold the shelf securely in place against movement in any direction.
The container is provided with a cover 5 which may be of the same material as the container and which is preferably simply an extension of one of the'walls of the container, the material being bent upon itself at the point of junction between the wall and the cover portion as at 6. When a suitable grade of cardboard or similar material is used, such bend or crease in the material forms a hinge upon WhlCh the cover .5 may be opened or closed. Such hinge construction in cardboard articles is common and well understood and needs no further description. The cover is preferably provided with a lip or flange 7 which fits within and against the Wall of the container opposite the hinge-bearingwall.
The cover construction at Figs. I and III.
A hinged. closure-8 for the bottom is provided in a manner substantially the same as is clearly illustrated the above described construction of the cover 5 and needs no further description, the same being clearly illustrated at Figs. I and III.
The combined fastening and suspending means consists of a cord 9, one end of which is knotted as at 10 below a Washer 11 on the under side of the shelf 2. The cord, passes through a hole substantially in the center of the shelf 2 and through a corresponding hole 12 in the cover 5. WVhen it is desired to secure the container in closed position, the cover 5 and the bottom closure 8 are compressed to the positions indicated in Fig. III and the cord 9 is then wrapped around the box and the end thereof is tied in a simple knot upon itself atapoint adjacent the hole 12 in the cover, all as clearly indicated at 13.
When it is desired to suspend the kit for use of the contained articles, the knot is untied and the cord 9 is unwound and may be used to hang the kitupon a hook, limb of a tree, or any other suitable object.
The kit is here illustrated as containing toilet articles, as tubes of soap,-tooth paste or the like, in the upper compartment and paper towels in the usual folded compact form in the lower compartment. The pack of towels is inserted through the bottom of the kit when the closure 8 isopen and slot 14 is provided for withdrawing the paper towels as desired for use. The layers or folds of paper towels as packed within the box are clearly indicated by the dotted lines at the 1 right of Fig. I. The tubes of soap, tooth paste and the like are indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. I above the shelf 2. f
When the kit is suspended by thecord 9 the tension upon the cord, resulting from the Weight of the loaded kit, will be comparatively small and no difiiculty will be eXperienced in easing such tension sufiiciently to permit the cover 5 to open adequately to give free access to the articles contained within the upper compartment above the shelf 2.
Ordinarily the closure 8 will be constructed with a suflicicntly tight fit so that it will remain in closed positioneven when the weight of the paper towel pack or other article rests upon it but, if desired, any suitable fastening means for this closure may be provided. Such means are not here shown for the reason that When properly constructed the tightness of the fit of the closure Will be sufficient for the purpose.
It Will be noted that the fastening of the cord 9 to the metalshelf 2 in the manner above provided evenly distributes the supporting strain by reason of the stiffness or rigidity of the shelf and the broad bearings of the shelf in the ends of the container. The misshaping of any portion of the device by suspension strain is thereby avoided.
lVhile the contents of the kit or container have been described as toiletor sanitary articles it Will be understood that the container may as Well be used as a first aid kit and for carrying articles for first aid use as Well as a great variety of other articles.
I claim- 1. In a package for toilet and similar ar ticles, a box, a rigid shelf mounted therein and dividing the box into two compartments, closures for each of said compartments and a combined suspending and fastening member anchored to said shelf and extending through one of said closures.
2. In a package for toilet and similar articles, a box with openings therein, a rigid shelf mounted therein and having broad bearings in the Walls of said box, closures 'forsaid openings and a member anchored anchored to said shelf and extending through i one of said closures and a slot in one 0f said compartments for permit-ting removal of thin articles therethrough.
In testimony JAMES J. SULLIVAN.
