TOILET (10MB.
Application led November 5, 1927, Serial No. 231,325. and in Great Britain November 10, 1926.
This invention relates to that class of toilet Combs in which the separate teeth, or a number oi teeth, are individually or in series or sectionally retained in a removable manner Within a backing or holder, so that when it is required to clean the teeth ot the comb, the teeth in either form, can be removed for cleaning purposes and be replaced Within the holder in a cleanly condition.
The object of the present invention is to provide a cushion or resilient means Within the holder whereby the teeth or sections ot teeth, when the comb is in use will be in en* gagement with the cushion and the points ot the teeth will be caused to follow approximately the diierent portions ot' the shape of the head, and thereby obtain a more etfective combing ot the hair, the cushion or resilient means returning the teeth to their normal position when relieved ot pressure. The cushion or resilient means may be ot` any preferred construction or suitable material and may be in the form of india rubber cooperatively associated with the butt end oit each tooth or with the inner edges of the tooth sections and the back ot the'comb, and such cushion ot india rubber may be stretched or relaxed and may be modified in accordance "with equivalentstructures, or instead of rubbei', a resilient metallic stri maybe mounted in cooperative relation Witli` the butt ends oif the teeth and back of the comb or sections forming the comb, said metal resilient means preferably consisting ot curved metal pieces or springs as an auxiliary resilient means with the same advantages in holding the teeth in such manner that they may be caused to contorni to the shape of the head or return to normal position.
Furthermore, the comb teeth have their butt ends or the sections soconstructed that they areadapted to be positively retained 1Within the back or holder, and may be ot any desired shape and also scheld that the teeth or sections ot' teeth may be removed vand replaced When necessary.
The invention further consists in the details of construction and arrangement otl the several parts which Will be more fully here-` ina'fter described and claimed.

Fig. 9 is a still further side elevation the comb shown by Fig. 7.
Fig. l0 a transverse section through the comb shown by Figs. 7 and 9, with interior parts removed.
As shown by Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the backing or holder ot' the comb comprises a trough shaped piece ot metal A having holes B along its bottom, and a longitudinal rib C projecting from each side, the` ends being closed. The teeth D are shapedto tit the holes B and have enlarged or butt ends D which have a con tour adapting them to closely lit the trough A and 'forming shoulders to bear against `the y bot-tom ot the trougl'i, around said holes. l/Vhen all the teeth are positioned in the holes B a strip ot soft india rubber `E..preferably` v hollotved out at its top edge as at EQis placed against the enlarged or butt ends D of the teeth D with a portion of ,said rubber strip projecting above the .trough A. Another trough F having closed ends and tormed With internal longitudinal grooves Gr along its sides closely `tits over the trough A. After-'these troughs have been assembled, they become" temporarily locked together by reason of the engagement ot' thc ribs C With the grooves G and slightly compress the rubber E'inside of the same, the rubber serving to maintain the ccf engagement of the trough A withthe` sides of the trough F, the trough A being adapted to yield slightly to insure a temporary locking association of the two troughs.. The rubber strip or cushion means E will exert pressure upon the enlarged upper ends or butts D `of the teeth D, so thatany pressure on one or more of these teeth during the use of the comb will be transmitted to the cushion E which will yield to and allow the tooth or `eeth to recede and thus permit the points of the teeth to adjust themselves to the contour of the head. At any time desired and found necessary, the two troughs A and F may be separated, the rubber cushion E may be removed and the teeth D may be withdrawn from the trough A and afterwards reset and the parts then reassembled j ust explained. The teeth D project through the openings B in the bottom of the trough A, as shown by Fig. Il, so that said teeth are thus retained in positively applied position.
Figs. 5 and 6 show a modification of the' structure wherein the bottom of the trough A is formed with slots J instead of with a plu- 'ality of openings B as heretofore described, and the teeth H are formed in sections of a predetermined number and project from a flexible baclr l, the said bach being larger in dimensions than the upper portions of the teeth which extend therefrom so that a reliable su eport will be formed for the said sections of the flexible back. The sectional bacls l are provided with extensions H at their ends to properly space and assist in the retention of these sections in the trough A in the same manner as in the case of the single teeth. To remove the teeth or sections of teeth in this modified form, the two troughs are pulled apart, when the teeth sections forming the comb may be withdrawn. Otherwise the structure shown by Figs. 5 and 6 is sim ilar to that illustrated by Figs. l to 3, inclusive.
In the further modification shown by Figs. 7 to l0, inclusive, the comb section K is continuous and has back K of flexible or yielding character. The holder or backing in this instance is composed of two pieces L and M of metal or analogous material havingtheir upper edges bent at right angles toward one another, as at L and M, the piece or member L fitting inside the piece or member M, the lower ends of the end portions of these, pieces or members being slightly lengthened or formed with extensions which are connected by pivots N to form hinges N for retaining the comb K within the holder. In this construction the comb is provided with end extensions K2 to which are pivoted the outer ends of curved leaf springs P which have their free ends reversely projecting towards the center of the comb back KV and against which they bear. In assembling the parts L and M of the holder are opened on the hinge connections7 and a strip Q, of india rubber is inserted in the portion L and positioned next to the angular bent upper edge or flange L" f the member L. The leaf springs P are then slightly comw pressed or flattened, and the comb K with the springs is then inserted between the open pieces or members L and M with the springs l? bearing against the rubber cushion Q and with the ends K2 of the comb resting against the hinges il', as shown by Fig. 7. TWhen the two pieces or members L and M are closed the comb springs and india rubber will be properly associated, and the two pieces or members L and M will be held closed by engagement of a projection it at or about the center of the angular bent Lipper edge or flange L with a hole or opening' in the wall of the angular or bent upper edge or flange M of the piece or member lill. The buch K, of the comb K being flexible, will permit the teeth to yield and conform to the contour of the head, as in the 'terms of the device heretofore described. llhen the two pieces or members L and M are closed and secured, the rubber Q und springs lD will be enclosed, as shown by Fig. 9, but at any time desired the members L and M may be opened to permit the removal of the comb and its springs for cleaning or other purpos ln all of the forms of the device shown, the essential features will be present, whether the teeth of the comb be ce .d as single units,in sections, or as a single part nat is to say, the teeth may yield so that the points of the teeth will conform to the contour of the head. ln those instances where it is preferred to use rubber any construction of rubber cushion adapted for the purpose may be need, and the yielding action the' i will extend throughout the length of the comb. lll.; interposing the rubber cushion Q3 between the springs ll' and the bac-lf. el the comb, as shown in "l" to l0, an ai provided which, combi o.
with the rcs bach l', will result in a closer conformation of the points of the comb with the contour of the head, and moreover in this iinftance it not necessary that the rubber cushion il. hollowed out or reduced along upcr ed.; as inthe forms shown by Figs. l eno,
Y In all the forms of the improved comb it will be observed that suilicient play or space is provided in the holder backing for the yielding action of the teeth of the comb and that either the hollowed out or channel portion E of the rubber cushion E, as s-.iown by Figs. l and 5, and the space between the bach l of the comb K or the rubber cushion Q, as shown by Figs. 7 and 8, will give freedom to the alternate depression and normal exten sion of the comb teeth during the use of the comb to conform to the irregularities of the contour of the head. ln some instances, the rubber cushion Q, shown by Figs. 7 and S, may be omitted, and the springs P may act alone as theV main cushion means between the comb bach and the holder or backing of the entire comb.
It will be understood that suoli changes as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims in the details of construction and arrangement of the several carts may be adopted without departing f nature or spirit of the invention.
