COMPOSITE PICTURE.
Application led December 24, 1827.
My invention relates'to a type of so-called butterfly picturel being more particularly a silhouette picture having a colored background made from the natural wings oit butterflies.
lt is an object of my invention to combine the varied coloring and shading which is present in butterflies wings with a black or other suitably colored silhouette image to give a varied lighting ell'ect and to present a finished picture having a highly colored background changeable in shade. and effect according to change of viewpoint and embracing a foreground object in relief against such background.
Other objects of my invention will be better understood from the Afollowing; description of an illustrated embodiment of same as shown in the accompanying drawings and in which:
llig. 1 is a view illustrating a linished picture embodying the use of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view along the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view corresponding to Fig. 1 but in which the mat and the silhouette image have not been placed in position.
Fig. 4 is a view illustrating a type of silhouette image used in the production ot pictures as herein illustrated.
More particularly describing` my invention, the numeral 11 indicates a back board which is surrounded by a. frame 12. A plurality of butterflies wings indicated at 13 are placed upon the back board 12 to give any desired background eiect such as the sky indicated at 14; the body o'l water at 15; the horizon at 16 and it' desired, clouds or a moon as indicated at 17 and 18. lt will be understood that through the use of variously colored wings any desired vbackground effect may be easily obtained to set the foreground image out in relief.
The numeral 20 indicates the foreground silhouette image cut from black paper or any other suitable substance to form a pleasing combination with the background. The silhouette image 2O is placed upon the butterflies wings indicated at 15 in a-posit-ion as somewhat shown in Fig. 1 and a suitably'prepared mat 21 is placed over the combination serial no. 242,391.
to hold the saine in place upon the back board 11.
yllhe mat may be covered by a glass 'face as indicated at 22 and l lind that the most pleasing color clients are obtained by making the niat and the silhouette of the same material, the preference in most cases being a black card board or paper. For the purpose of holding the backboard 11 in firm engagement with the mat 21, l provide a packing member 23 which may be composed of telt or other suitable substance and is placed in the frame 12 between the backboard 11 and a frame backing 24.
By making a composite picture as above described it is immediately apparent that striking effects may be produced as the contrast between the foreground silhouette and the background of changeable colored butterflies wings is marked. The silhouette having thickness adds to the attractiveness ot"y the effect produced, as when viewed the object iormed or pictured by the silhouette stands out in relief against the background.
My invention is not to be confused with pictures formed by cutting out the object to be represented from a sheet of material and forming such object by the use of butterflies wings or other highly colored material, but consists essentially in forming a background et butteriiics wings over and in front of which is placed the subject of the picture.
l have found it desirable although not entirely ,necessary to apply paste to the back board for receiving the wings and holding the same in place and also paste may be applied between the wings and silhouette for the purpose of keeping the silhouette in place. i
While I have herein described and illustrated a single embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that various modifications of the same might be easily made by those familiar with the art without in the least departing from the spirit or scope of my invention as described above and in the following claims.
l claim as my invention:
l. A composite picture comprising: a frame; a back plate mounted in said frame; butteriiy wings placed on said back plate; a mat having an opening therein placed upon said back plate with said opening over said butterfly Wings; and a silhouette image mounted in said opening over Said butteriy Wings.
2. A composite picture comprising a background composed of butterlyrwings gra beckmg or said background; a'sllhouete image Y placed before said baolground; and a nml;
