rlhis invention is an ironing board of that general type comprising an inclined leg, a support, a platform mounted intermediate its ends on the support, one end of the platform cooperating with the`l adjacent end of the leg` in `gripping an object, and means for mounting the suport for adjustment longitudinally of the leg.
rlihe object of the present invention is to provide novel mea-ns for mounting the supportfor adjustment longitudinally of the leg, and so to construct the leg that the platform can be stowed away within the leg, when the platform is not in use.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the util? ity of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the invention, parts of the leg being in section;
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken through the leg;
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing one of the sleeves;
Figure 4l is a. sectional view showing one of the sleeves mounted on the corresponding side member of the leg; and
Figure 5 is an elevation showing the inner side of one of the sleeves, parts being broken away.
The device forming the subject matter of this application comprises a platform F, preferably a board, an inclined leg L, a support S, and means M for mounting the support S for adjustment lengthwise of the leg L, the kplatform P being mounted intermediate its ends on the support S, the upper end of the leg L and the corresponding end of the platform P cooperating to grip a. tableT, or other object, when the lower end of the leg L rests on the lioor F.
In a more detailed description, the leg L is made up of side members or bars 6 and 6a 4piece 7, on the other hand.
connected at their upper ends, and on their lower edges, by an upper cross piece' which engages immediately with the table 'l or other object, as shown in Figure 1. Near to their lower end, the side members (Sand 6a ofthe leg L are connected by oppositely disposed lower cross pieces 8.V It may be noted at this point that when the platform Pis not in use, the platform may be mounted between the side members 6 and 6 ofthe legL, one end 'of the platform P being `located between the lower cross pieces 8, and the other end of the platform l? being disposed between the support S on the one hand, and the upper cross In this way, the platform P can ybe stowed away in small compass, within the contour of the leg L.
The side member 6 of the leg L is provided on its upper edge with upstanding projections or pins 9. sleeve 11, preferably made or" metal, is adjustable lengthwise of the side member 6 of the leg L. The sleeve 11 is provided on its innerside with flanges 12 and 14 which extend toward each other, the inner edges of the flanges 12 andll being spaced apart. The flange 12of the sleeve 11 is plain, as shown at 15 in Figure 8. In the upper wall 18 of the sleeve 11 there are holes or seats 17 adapted to receive the pins 9 on the side member 6 of the leg L. The flange 12 is somewhat shorter than the flange 14, and at the lower end of the flange 12 there is a wing 19,
located in the same plane with the upper wall 18of the sleeve 11, and at right angles to the flanges 12 and 14. The wing 19 has openings 20. The cross section of the sleeve 11 is large enough, compared with the cross section of the part 6 of the leg L, so that the sleeve 11 may be moved transversely of the part 6. In this way, the pins 9 can be disengaged from the holes 17 thereby to permit the sleeve 11 to be adjusted lengthwise of the leg L, as occasion may demand.
rIhev side member 6a of the leg L is provided on its inner side with projections or pins 10. The sleeve which is adjustable on the side member 6a is shown at 11a and its parts are designated by numerals hereinbefore used, with the suiiix a The flange 12n of the sleeve 11a is provided with notches or seats 16 adapted to cooperate with the pins 10. Securing elements 21 connect the wings 19 and 19"JL to the ends of the support S, the support often being in the form of a wooden bar. The securing elements 21 are located llO in the openings'of the Wings 19 and' 19?, of
which the4 openings 20 of the Wing 19 may be regarded as typical. The sleeve 11a can he moved like the sleeve 11, and the pins l0 can be' disengaged from the notches'l. .The general construction is such that the support S,.-
elong with the sleeves l1 and 11a, mayheadjusted lengthwise of the leg Las hasloeenY pointed out hereinhefore in'connecti'on with the sleeve l1. l i e It'wvillbe clea;r'tl1at the construction of the Y device is such theta.. novel means is provided Y whereby the supportV S may he adjusted lengthwiseof Vthe leg L andi be held in any position to which it may have been adjusted.
What is claimed isf- An; ironing hoard comprising an inclined leg'inclndingspaced side members` a support, a platform:mounted intermediate its ends on the snpport,'one end of the'platorm cooperating with the adjacent end of the leg in grippingan object, and means formounting thesupportfor adjustment longitudinally ot theleg; said meanscomprising sleevesreceivi ing the side members of the leg and connected to the support, theV upper Wall of each 'sleeve and the corresponding side member of the leg having a releasable pin and socket connection respectively, the vcross sectional area of the sleeve hemglarge enough With relation to that ofthe side member of theleg Yso that the sleeves can be moved transversely and longitudinallyof the side members,
thereby to separate the pin and socket connection, and. to Apermit the sleeves and the support to he adjusted longitudinally of vthe side members of the legs, one of the sleeves being,l provided on its side with oppositely disposed flanges, spaced apart, and a pin and socket connection'betweenv said flange and the side of the Acorresponding side member of the leg, the last-specilied pin and socket connectionrbeing separahle'when the sleeveA is moved transversely of the side member, as afore- In testimonythatl claim-the foregoingV as my own, I have Vhereto alli-:red my signature.
