IMPROVEMENT lINV PEAT-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,184, dated November 23, 1875; application filed J nly 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, GEoRGE S. NEWTON, of Wanpnn, and FREDERICK ZOLLNER, of Randolph, in the county of Dodge, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain Improvements in Peat-Gutters, of which the following is a specification:

A is the frame of the cutter; B, the Wheels under the peatcutter, and on which it is moved from place to place; C, vertical shaft,
with the peat-box and cutter attached to the bottom of same; D, the box which the peat is forced into as the shaft G descends; lt, the
sharp cutting-edge which cuts the peat on the bottom of the box D; F, a door to box D, which is opened after the box is raised, for the purpose of letting the peat fall out. This door ts into the bottom of the box D, and at the top is held in place by a hinged hasp, G, which swings down over a staple or latch, H, which passes through a hole in the hasp, and a pin, I, passes through the staple and holds the hasp firmly, and keepsthe door closed; K, a hinged knife forming a stop at the bottom of the box, which, when the peat-box is shoved down and filled with peat, is shoved in and cuts o' the peat, and holds it in the box; L, a pulley in a way,'Which the knifehandle works in, behind which a rope, M, passes, one end of which is attached 4to the knife-handle, and the other end attached to anaxle of a Wheel, N, which is hung in bearings out from the top of box D and when the box D is down in the peat-bog the Wheel N is turned by a crank-pin in it, and the rope y be raised with the box `when the shaft C is e raised; O, rollers secured to standard T, running in ways P, which sustain the shaft O; Q, rack on shaft C, which pinion R meshes into to raise and lower the shaft; S, Wheel on the end of shaft, on which pinion R rnns; T, a standard on the front of frame A, on which shaft G works U. a pulley on the top of standard T, over which rope U runs, one end of rope U attached to the top of shaft C, and the other end of same around shaft W, which is supported by boxes X secured to the frame A. The shaft on which pinion R runs operates in boxes secured to standard T. On the journals inside of the boxes X, which sustain the shaft W, are bevel pinions, which Work loosely on said journals; and on the inside of those bevel-pinions are teeth Z, into which a pin, A', `on the shaft W catches when the shaft is shoved endwise, and revolves the pinion on the forward end of the shaft; B', a lever, one end of which is fastened to the frame A, and the other end resting on an arm, C', and a couple of pieces of metal, D', forming the center of the lever B', clasp round shaft W, between two shoulders on the shaft; and with this lever the shaft W is moved endwise in either direction, and a pulley, E', on the'shaft W, by which, with a belt, power may be applied, and on the sides of the machine are a couple of shafts, F', with bevel-pinions G' on their ends meshing into pinions on shaft XY; and .when the shaft l/V is lnoved in eithervdirection the pins A' will be meshed into the teeth Z, and revolve the shaft F' on whichever side it may be; and on the frame A are pulleys H', behind which a rope, l', runs to the standard T, and the other end of rope I' runs through a snatch-block, Z', and round one of the shafts F', so that as either shaft is revolved it will pull on the rope attached to it, and pull the standard T and shaft C tothe side of the machine, for the 2 p 171mm purpose of emptying the peat from box D, or carrying it back after being emptied for another load.
The operation is as follows: The machine being set where it is wanted to work the shaft C is placed over the place where the peat is to be eut, and the shaft is' run down bythe rack and pinion R, and the box will be filled then force in the knife E and out the peat, and hold the same in the box; then take hold -of the end of rope U, if the machine is operated by power, and pull on same, and the shaft C will be raised and with it the box; then take hold of lever B and move the shaft W, so that pin A shall catch into the teeth on pinion, and the shaft and box with the peat-wi11 be hauled on the ways P to the side of the machine;v then take out pin I and turn up the hasp, and take ont door F, and the box D can tip down. The hinge will permit it to do so, and the peat will be emptied out 'of the box; then carry the box and shaft back lfor another load.
