SUPPORT FOR BRAKE HANGERS.

My invent-ion relates to supports for the brake hangers of railroad cars; the hangers being pendently supported from a portion of the truck frame so as to permit the necessary 5 oscillatory movement of the hangers during operation of the brakes; my invention being; applicable to either the continuous link hanger or to the U-shape hanger and therefore permits interchange of the hangers to be made.
, One object of my invention is to provide a construction wherein all wear induced by the oscillations. and vibrations of the brake hanger will be taken care of by my improved keeper elements and as a result a replacement of worn parts may be readily made without replacement or repair of the truck frame or integral portions thereof; replacement with my improved structure being possible in a brief-period of time and expensive loss of time in car service thus obviated.
With my improved construction, in the event of misplacement or loss of the keeper elements, a proper brake applying position of the brake hanger may temporarily be maintained during road service until replacement of the elements is made.
. lhe objects and advantages of my invention will be readily apparent from the detailed 30 description of the exemplification shown in the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of an extension or arm on a truck frame provided with my improved means; a portion of the truck frame being shown in section and parts of the hanger broken away.

The exemplitications involve a truck frame a portion whereof is shown at 12,thc inner side whereof is provided with an arm or extension 13, preferably integral with the frame.
The extension or arm is of comparative width and the side disposed toward the adjacent wheelsof the truck is slotted lengthwise of the" extension so as to. provide the upper and lower bifurcations 14 and 15 whereby a hanger receiving slot is provided, open towards the wheels; the bifurcations and slot being preferably arrangedto provide a sloping pocket or socket as shown in Figures 2 and 4.
The bifurcations 14,15 are connected by the transversely disposed intermediate ribs 16, 16 andby the end ribs 17, 17; all of which have forward arcuate faces. The extension is transversclyslotted at opposite ends. intermediate ofthe adjacent intermediate rib 16 and the respective end rib 17, to provide the hanger passages 18, 18; the slots being. shown extending into the upper bifurcation 14 inorder to receive the enlarged upper eyeleted ends of a U-shape hanger 10.
My improved keeper and wear receiving means consists of an enveloping element or sleeve member 19, shown in perspective in Figure 5. This element is preferablyformed out of arectangular blank or steel plate of predetermined dimensions so that when bent substantially at its longitudinal center into ei-shape, in cross-section, it will fit into the open-sided pocket or socket in the extension or arm 13 ;-the sleeve member being of length substantially equal to the length of the pocket or socket between the upper and lower bifurcations 14- and 15 of the arm. The sleeve 19 at what may betermed the inner e is bent to have the semi-circular or rounded longitudinal edge 20 to conform'to the forward arcuat-e faces of the ribs 16, 16 and 1?. 17' in the pocket or socket and thus permit'a firm seating of the sleeve member against said ribs as shown in Figures 2, 8 and 4.
Preferably, before the sleeve member 19 is bent intothe shape described and shown, the blank of sheet steel is stamped to provide the out out slot 21 extending lengthwise of the blank adjacent to one longitudinal side thereof and terminatinga predetermined distance from the end of the blank, with the two ends of the slot extending substantially parallel with each other and disposed toward the opposite longitudinal side of the blank and terminating a short distance therefrom, as shown at 22, 22 in Figure In forming the slot as justdescribed, the portion, intermediate of the slot ends 22, 22, provides a curved lip or flange 23, (after the blank has been bent into sleeve shape) of transverse dimension slightly greater than the diameter of the hanger supporting pin 24 whereby the U-shape hanger It) is supported in place; and slightly greater than the diameter of the end of the continuous link 11 when such link is employed.
The ends 22, 22 of slot 21, in the sleeve, are adapted to register with the slots or passages 18, 18 in the arm and therefore receive the enlarged eyeleted ends of the U-shape hanger 10, which, after proper assembly, are disposed intermediate of the intermediate lip or flange 23 and the end portions 25, 25 of the sleeve member 19.
The sleeve member 19 at an intermediate point and in register with the slot 21 is provided with an opening 26, the opening 26 and slot 21 being intended to register with holes formed in the forwardly extended lobes 27, 28 on the upper and lower bifurcations 1 1- and 15.
In order to firmly hold the hanger supporting pin 2st, or the upper end of the continuous link hanger 11 in place so as to prevent undue vibration and chatter, I provide a complementary member 29. This member 29 consists of an elongated steel block pref erably of length corresponding with the length of the sleeve member 19. The inner longitudinal side of the block 29 is concaved at 30 to fit the side of the cylindrical hanger supporting pin 24 whereby the U-shape hanger 10 is pendently supported in place, or to fit the upper end of the continuous link 11 when the latter is en iployed.
The ends of the block member 29 are preferably extended beyond the upper and lower flat faces of the member 29 and also beyond the inner concaved side 30 to provide the fiat sidedflanges b1, 31. which are adapted to overlap the ends of the sleeve member 10 and also extend flush with the curved inner portions 25 of the sleeve member.
The inwardly extending portions of the flanges 31 close the pin receiving channel in the sleeve and therefore hold the supporting pin 24 against longitudinal movement; while the block member holds the pin 24:, or the continuous link 11 in place in the-sleeve member when the block and sleeve members are secured against lateral movement by the pin 32 which passes through the apertured lobes 27 28. of the arm bifurcations, through slot 21 and hole 26 of the sleeve member and through the hole 33 formed in the body of the block member 29, as shown in Figure 4. The
lapping portions or flanges 81 of the block member not only keep the pin 24: in place, but these flanges also reenforce the ends of the sleeve member and keep it from spreading.
Tl'ie relation between the sleeve member and the block member is such that after the sleeve member, with the supporting hanger pin 24; or the continuous link 11, has been insorted into the pocket or socket in the truck frame arm, the block member 20 is driven edgewise into the sleeve member, causing the latter to slightly spread into snug relation with the bifurcations or upper and lower walls of the pocket or socket in the truck frame arm, thereby preventing Vibration or rattle of the elements in the pocket it being understood, of course, that the curved inner wall of the sleeve member and the concaved side of the block member permit the necessary free oscillatory movement of the hanger.
The block member 29 is provided on its inner longitudinal side with a pair of transverse slots 34, 34, see Figure 6, for passage of the upper ends of the hangers; the slots being formed to permit free oscillatory movement of the hangers necessary during operation of the brakes.
It is apparent from the construction that all wear resulting trom rotation of the hanger supporting pin 24: or from the oscillations of the link hanger 11 will be taken by the upper and lower walls of the sleeve member, as the lip 23 extends beyond the adjacent side of the supportin pin or the continuous link. As a result the integral portions of the truck frame are not subjected to wear by the constant vibration of the brake-hangers and the thrusts encountered during application of the brakes; my construction therefore eliminating the serious loss and expense heretofore had; the construction at the same time permitting an interchange of hangers without necessitating alterations in construction.
The invention as shown and described is believed to be in its simplest embodiment, but certain alterations and modifications may be made without however, departing from the spirit of the invention.

2. A support for brake hangers comprisng the combination of brake hangers and a rack frame 3IOVldl with an arm having a Hill lateral elongated socket open toward the wheels of the truck, a member, U-shaped in cross-section, insertible in said socket and slotted for passage of the sides of the supporting hange a complementary member insert-ible in said first mei'nber and adapted to lap the ends thereof, the two meniibers being formed to provide channel for a link hanger and a hanger supporting pin, and means for holding said members with the hangers in said socket.

In a support for braliie hangers, a single piece member having parallel upper and lower sides arranged in spaced relation to provide a channel therebetiveen closed on one longitudinal side thereof and having transversely disposed slots for passage of the hangers therethrough, and a complementary member inscrtible in, the first member and having ends adapted to lap the ends of the lirstmen'iber.

A support for brake hangers comprising a brake hanger and hanger supporting pin receiving member channeled longitudinally and slotted transversely for passage of the sides of the brake hanger, and a keeper member insertible in said channeled memher, the ends of the keeper nicinberbeing formed to close the ends of the channeled member.
9. A support for brake hangers comprising an elongated channel forming member open at one longitudinal side and at the ends, 7
said member being transversely slotted from the closed longitudinal side thereof, and a keeper member insertible edgewise into said first member.
