This invention relates. to the manufacture of passementerie, decoratlve fimshmg braids, gimp, edgings, borders, fringes and other trimmings havmghtasselled ornamentations such as used in up olstery, interior decoration and for other ike purposes.

Among the objects of the invention is to generally improve articles of manufacture 0 the character described; and to further provide a highly practical and efiicient method for production of same.

A particular object of the invention is the revision of articles of the character described having tassels', wherein the latter are provided. in an exceedingly simple manner resulting in rapid and cheap. production, the

Referring in detall to the drawing 10 denotes an upholstering tasselled ornamentations 11 embodying the invention. The fringe 10 may comprise an elon ated strip of cotton, wool, natural or arti cial silk or other textile'material, woven, any well known manner. If desired a flexible wire strand member 17 may be incorporated in the fringed edging structure between the stitches 15', as shown in Figs. 1 form a shape retaining means for the tasselled ornamentations as hereinafter more fully explained. The member 17 may comprise a strand of fabric covered flexible wire threaded longitudinally into the edging by any well understood weaving or knitting operation.

The'novel process embodying the invention is carried out as follows After the border 10 and fringed portion 10" of the braid 10 have been fabricated with a desired design in any well understood manner, the tufts 14 are permanently attached to the looped ends 10 of the fringed portions the longitudinal stitches 15, thusorming the sections 16 of the trimming 16 into a continuous row. The wire member 17 when used is inter-twined in the layers of the fringed edging structure between said stitches 15 during the sewing operation. The fringe edging structure at each of the trimmin elements 16 is nextsevered at the demar ation 16 to separate the sections 16". Then each of these sections is easily bent out of its normal flat position into an annular sha e to simulate a tying means for a tassel of t e usual construction. Each bent section 16"v carries an attached tuft 14 which, as will be seen from the drawing, is so ositioned and formed as to form together w1th the annular portion 16* a complete ordinary tied tassel ornamentation. Here the braid 110 is made with cord strands 110 assing thru the fringe structure, said stran s being extended to form the looped fringed portion 110. Looseended tufts 11 1 are attached to said portion 110 by rows of spaced stitches 115. The latter secure between them a draped chenille cord 116 forming uniformly spaced sections 116' which are severed at the demarkation 116". The tassel ornamentations 111 are made by bending the separated sections 116 and are held in shape without the aid of a reinforcing wire simply by ressing said sections into proper contouras s own in Fig. 3

Another'modified form of the invention is shown in Figs. 4, 4 and 4 The fringe 210 here shown is similar in all respects to that shown in Figs. 2, 2 and 2 and described above, with the exception that the separately attached tufts 14 are eliminated and instead the fringed portion 210 extends to replace said tufts. The double row of stitches 215 and the trimming 216 secured between the latter are applied to extend along the mid-portions of the looped ends 210 of the fringe portion 210. The bight 210 of said ends 210 may be severed to provide a loose ended fringed edging structure if desired as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 The tassel ornamentation 211 is formed by bending the severed trimming section 216 into shape, as described above for the tassel ornamentation 11 of the braid 10.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is Well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a process for the manufacture of an article of the character described, the steps of applying a continuous row of decorative trimming elements lengthwise and inwardly from a fringed loose edge ortion of the article, inter-twining a flexib e stiffening strand longitudinally in said row, separatlng said trimmingelements, and then bending same into annular formation as and for the purpose described and specified.

An article of manufacture of the character described comprising a strip of material having a longitudinally extending fringed edge portion, and a row of decorative trimmingsformed from a continuous band secured-lengthwise the frin ed portion, each of said trimmings being positioned with respect to the fringed portions attached thereto to simulate tying means for a tassel, and a bendable shape retaining means incorporated in each of said trimmings as and for the purpose described and specific 3. In an article of manufacture of the character described, a strip of material having a longitudinally extending fringed edge portion, and a wire reinforced band having markings thereon secured lengthwise said fringed ortion, said band being severed at said mar I bent to form tasseled ornamentations with the attached fringed portions.

In a process for the manufacture-of an article of the character described, the steps of applying a continuous row of decorative trimming elements lengthwise'and inwardly from a fringed loose edge portion of the article, inter-twining a bendable metal Wire longitudinally in said row, separating said trimming elements, and then bending same into annular formation as and for the purpose described and specified.

5. An article of manufacture of the character described comprising a strip of material having a tasseled edge portion, each tassel comprising a fringed portion extending from said material and a flexible shape retaining member incorporated into said fringe and bent to form said tassel.

An article of manufacture of the character described, comprising a strip of material having a tasseled edge portion, each tassel comprising a fringed portion extending from said material, trimming secured to said fringed portion, and a flexible shape retaining member'associated with said trimming and bent to form said tassel.

7 An article of manufacture of the character described comprising a strip of material having a tasseled edge portion, each tassel comprising a fringed ,portion extending from said material, trimming secured to said fringed portion, and a strip of flexible metal associated with said trimming and bent to form said tassel.

8. Anarticle of manufacture of the character described comprising a strip of material having a fringed edge portion extending therefrom, a strip of trimming secured to said fringe lengthwise with respect to said edge, and a bendable shape retaining means incorporated in said trimming and bent to form a tassel of said fringed portion.
