My invention relates to improvements in vending machines of the coin controlledtype,
the same being designed particularly, though not exclusively, for dispensing match filled boxes.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable and relatively inexpensive apparatus of the instant nature, wherein dual dispensing devices are operated by a single actuator and caused alternately to vend match boxes or like packets.
Another object of the invention is to vprovide a machine of the present kind, wherein the vending mechanism is normally locked` against actuation, but freed to function upon the application of a ycoin thereto.
A further object is to supply a coin controlled vending machine including an actuating lever arranged to guard the coin slot in all except the extreme positions oftheactuating lever, wherein the slot is cleared to receive a coin preparatory to the initiation of movement of said lever. y
With the foregoing and other objects yin view, which will appear in the following description, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter `described and claimed. y'

Referring to the drawings, it will be observedthat my improvement consists of a box-like base A and a tower-like structure" of the base A. Side plates 13, 14, attached to the frame- plates 10, 11, -are formed with riser portions 13', 14', at the rear thereof, said riser portions being integral with a deck-y plate`15, which has ailange 1,5 turned down from the rearward edge thereof and secured at its lower margin to the rearedge of the upper frame-plate 11. Hinged on said flange 15 is a pendant door 16 for the back of the base A, saidvdoor being equipped lwith a lock 17 co-'operating with a catch 18 on the bot-- Vtom frame-plate 10. The tower-likestructure B includes a sheet metal body b stamped to form a pair of spaced magazines or chutes 19 U-shaped in transverse section (Fig.v 5). The outersides of the body b are extended to form legs 20, which are received lwithin ren cesses in theupper and bottom frame- plates 10, 11 and secured to said plates. 'A door i 21 hinged at its lowereedg'e to the deck-plate 15 normally closes the backs of the magazines 19 and a lock 22 on said door co-operates with acatchr 23 on a cover 24 fitted on the body b and capping'said magazines 19. The front magazine panels Z2 of thebody b have sight openings 25 stampedtherein, the lower edges of said panels lying in the horizontal plane of the deck-plate 15 of the base A. v
At theY bottom of each magazine 19 is a combination vending device C each form ing a box support and kvending tray. These vending devices are identical, each being formed from a strip of sheet metal bent to provide a base-plate 26, an elevated rest 27 at the rear of the device and an upright guard flange 28 at the front of the device. Each vending device C has. a pair of studs 29 depending from the base-plate 26 thereof and riding in a guide-slot 30 in the upper frame-plate 11. These studs 29 guide the vending devices C as they slide back and forth on the frame-plate 11 under the deckplate 15 of the base A and through the bottoms of the magazines 19. In the retracted positionof a vendingdevice C (Figs. 3 and 4), the box rest 27 is disposed beneath they deck-plate 15, the tray portion between said rest 27 and the front guard flange l28 being then sheathed within the magazine to receive the lowermost box of the stack'therein. l The forward projection of saidy device from said retracted vposition results in shifting the box rest 27 under vsaid stack of boxes and in unsheathing' 'said trayportion of said device to lll permit or the removal of the contained box therefrom. A lever 31 is pivoted between its ends, as at 32, to the upper frame-plate 11, the forward end of said lever overreaching the front of the base A and providing a convenient handle 31a for swinging the lever, the rear end of said lever having opposed ears 31b (Fig. 4) formed thereon. Gpposed cam-links 33 respectively pivoted to the ears 31b on the lever 31 join said lever with two vending devices C. The connection between each link 33 and its respective vending device is made through an upstanding` pin 34 in the link, said pin being inserted in a slot 35 traversing the base-plate 26 et the vending device. Each cam-link 33 has an angular canrslot 33a formed therein. and into which projects an upstanding tulcrum pin 35 which is anchored in the upper frame-plate 11. In the extreme positions of the lever 31 (solid and dotted lines, Fig. 4), one vending device C is retracted and the other projected, while, in the intermediate position oi said` lever, bot-h devices are to be found in retracted position. In other words, the iirst halt stroke oit the lever 31 in one direction retracts the previous y. ly projected vending` device C, while the last Cil haltI stroke of said lever in the same direction projects in the other vending device C.
A coin controlled latching device D is associated with the lever 31 to prevent the vending of boxes from the machine except upon the application thereto of a coin. Depending beneath the upper frame-plate 11 is a cage a consisting of forward and rear walls 36, 37
spaced slightly apart to form a coin slide transversely ot the lever 31. A dual coin embracing yoke l (Fig. 5) is provided, the same including a block 38 slidable in a slot 39 in the upper trame-plate 11, said block 38 being formed with pair ot outer depending branches or fingers 38, and an intermediate branch or linger 38h. A pin 38C rising from the block 38 tits in slot 40 in the lever 31 and serves to connect said block 40 with said lever 31. The .fingers 38a, 38" depending from said block 38 reach downward into the way or slide between the walls 36, 37 of the coin cage. This coin receiving way is closed at the bottom thereof medially or the cage by means of a bottom piece 36, the ends ot said cage being open at the bottom to allow coins to drop from either extremity thereoix into the box-like base A.` Reaching into the coin slide between thev walls 36, 37 and through an opening 37a in the rear wall 37 of t ie cage are a plurality of yielding spring pressed tumblers 41. Y The tumblers' 41 hinged on a common hinge-pin 42 are disposed along the wall 37 at the medial portion thereo'l and over the bottom piece 36L on the wall 36. lllhe yoke-fingers 38a, 38b are spaced apart so that one terminal linger 38a and the intermediate linger 38b will embrace the eXtreme tumblers 41 ineither oi the eX- treme positions of the lever 31. A coverplate 43 placed over the block receiving slot 39 in the upper trame-plate 11 hasl a slot 44 therein in which the pin 38c on the block 38 may play and is further provided with a slot 45 for coins. Thus termed with said slot 45, the cover-plate 43.1constitutes a coin guide through which coins may be inserted into the spaces between the branches of the yoke al and the walls 36, 37. This coin guide, however, is unobstructed by the lever 31 only when said lever is in one ot its extreme positions (Fig. 4)'. In either ot such positions o't' the lever 31, a coin inserted into the coin slot 45 passes between the vmedial yoke branch 38b and one ot the terminal branches 38a. A coin thus disposed engages and swings all of the tumblers 41 rearward, and in so retracting said tuinblers causes the way between the walls 36, 37 to be cleared for the movement therealong of the yoke-f1ngers 38a, 38h. As the lever 31 is swung to deliver a boX through one of the vending devices C, the'tumblers 41 progressively enter the coin slide behind the intermediate yoke-finger 38b and thereby lock said leveragainst reversal at various in either operating throw thereof. In being pushed past the tumblers 41 by the yoke-linger 38h, a coin holds said tumblers retracted until they are progressively overreached by said linger, the coin being finally thrust beyond the bottom piece 36a, after traversal of the last tumbler 41 by said coin, whereupon the coin drops upon the bottom plate 10. l
In use, the person attending the machine keeps the magazines 19 filled with stacked boxes, access to said magazines beinghad through the lock guarded door 21. Access to the bon-like base A to permit ot collection of deposited coins had through the lock guarded door 16. A customer linding the lever 31 in one extreme position or the other, inserts acoin in the slot 45 and shifts said lever into opposed extreme position. 0n the first halt throw ot the lever 31 the'projected device C is retracted, the tray portion thereof being sheathed in its respective magazine 19 to receive the lower box ot the stack therein. On the final halt throw of said lever 31, the previously sheathed device C projected from its respective magazine 19, the samepresent-ing the contained box to the customer. The flange 28 of the sheathed vending device C guards its respective magazine and the tumblers 41, locking the yoke-lingers 38a, 38h against movement between the cage walls V36,
37, prevents actuation ot the lever 31 in the absence of a tumbler retracting coin.
lrVhile' I have stated that my improved mai chine is designed particularly Jfor vending match illed boxes and while I have used the .expression boxes throughout the specification, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to a vending machine for boxes alone, since it is obvious that suitably sized packages,
packets, cakes, and the like may be dispensed from my machine in a most satisfactory manner.
Changes inthe specific form of my invention, as herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I'A claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. Ina machine of the class described, a base, a pair of box receiving magazines rising from said base, combined vending tray and stack supporting devices, one for cach magazine, each device being slidable forward and back through its respective magazine at the bottom thereof, a lever pivoted between its ends to said base, cam-links, one for each of said devices, each link joining its respectivel vice, whereby upon a throw of said lever, in
one direction, said device is projected into vending position and upon the reverse throw ofsaid lever said device is retracted into box receiving position.
3. In a machine of the class described, a pair of upright magazines, each adapted te receive a stack of boxes and being formed at the bottom thereof with an opening for the removal therethrough of the lowermost box of the stack, a vending device for each magazine, each device being movable forward and back through its respective magazine to deliver boxes one after the other through the delivery opening therein, each device being formed with a guard flange for closing the delivery opening of its respective magazine in the retracted position of the device, a'lever pivoted vto swing between the two extreme positions, a pair of links pivoted to said lever, one link having a slidable pivotal connection with one of said devices and the other link having `a similar connection with the other of said devices, each link having an angularly formed slot therein, a fulcrum for each klink in slidable co-operation with the slot of its respective link, the relation of said lever, links and vending devices being suchthat in one extreme position of the lever one device occupies retracted position with its flange closing the delivery opening of its respective magazine while the other device rests in projected delivery position, said links serving, upon a throw of said lever from one extreme position to the other, to retract the projected vvending device and thereafter project the retracted device. n.
4. In a machine of the class described, a pair of upright magazines, each adapted to receive a stack of boxes, a vending device for -each magazine, each device being movable forward and back through its respective mag.- azine severally to deliver boxes therefrom, ya pivoted lever, a pair of links pivoted to said lever, one link having a slidable pivotal connection with one of said devices, and the other link having a similar connection with the' other of said devices, each link being slidably fulcrnmed between the points of its pivotal connection kwith the lever and its respective vending device, said links serving successive ly to shift said vending devices in opposite directivons upon a throw of said lever in either direction.
5. In a machine of the class described, a
pair of upright magazines, each adapted to receive a stack of boxes and being formed at the bottom thereof with an opening for the removal therethrough of the lowermost box of the stack', a vending device for each magazine, each device being movable forward and back through its respective magazine to deliver boxes one after the other through the delivery opening therein, each device being formed'with a guard flange for closing the delivery opening of its respective magazine in the retracted position of the device, a reversely movable actuating member common to both of said devices and means connecting said member with said devices .for successively shifting the same reversely upon movement of said member in either direction:
