Briefly, the invention consists in progres vsivcly ind rfruvice'tionully passing the unclean pulp lihers, in o` watery stricte over the surface of u series ot inclined sepiunting screens9 and alternately od :ne and drainirj' a cleariisine` wetter there until subs-tuntinl-ly :ill ont the inipuriies h'o A been removech `zii-'ter which the cleaned s are discharged into u receiving ineens adjacent the lower portion oit the zipperotus subsequent use irl-the nnin facture ,new paper stock.
rl'he novel pulp liber cleansing;4 ci shown in the accompanying ilruwi ably comprises fil-box like buse structi 'c havingzi series of inclined separating screens i7, Send 9 arranged one Aabove the other is shown in Figure l. 'l`hese screens are suitably mounted between ond secured to 'the opposed members ll und l2 which Aaresupported by upright supportingrV members lll, preifcrebly mounted upon the beams is shown in Fie'- ures l und n. lhc lower ends ot the side nummers il and l2 ire also prepefobly sup ipiortcd upon the booms l fisshovfn.
A suitable receiving moons or trough l5 is provided odjncent the upper odge of the screen if'. luto this trough the uncleuned' pulp lber is discharged in si. Vutcry state from :i di tributingij pipe lo having o plurality of spaced dischiirgc pipes l? connected thereto und adapted to downwardly direct the watery pulp fiber into the trough l5. A feed pipe i8? having o control valve 191 mounteiil therein, is connected to one end oi the distribuiti'ne` pipe 16 end leeds therefrom to u suitable source not sho wn. its "the ur.- clesn pulp liber is discharged into the troiuh itwill overiow the relatively lower woll 2l thereof and will be discharged onto the screen 7 over the surface oit which it will downwardly travel by gravity. From the screen the partially cleaned fibers will discharged into o mixing'box or trough Means are preferably provided Lfor evenly distributing, the pulp fiber over the surface ot' the screen 7. Such means prererably consists in the provision of a member or splash board 28, havingl its ends secured to the end members ll and which board is arranged in spaced relation. to the wall 2l of the trough i5 and also to the bottom wall 24.- ot the trough lo. This splash board functions to prevent the watery pulp mass discharged into the trough l5 from splashing over the wall 2l to the surface of the screen. ylhe space provided between the wall 2l and the lower portion of the splash-board 23 is o'f such size as to cause the material to be evenly distributed over the surface adjacent the screen, thereby eliminating any danger of the material beine' uncvenly discharged to the surface of the adjacent screen which will interfere with the cleansing; and separating process. is the material downwardly travels over the surface of the screen 7, a portion et the water contained therein will drain through the screen and will be discharged to the inclined bottoni wall 25 ot' the apparatus, removinp` with it a portion of the inipurities, while the partially cleaned fibers will be discharged into the mixing` trough 22.
In order that substantially all oi the impurities may be removed from the pulp fiber it is necessary that means be pijpvided whereby a cleansing water may be `added thereto and the partially cleaned fibers thoroughly mixed therewith so that when the pulp is discharged from one screen to the next, a similar cleansing` process will tali place. Such a means is shown in `the drawings, particularly Figures l, 2, 3 and 6. As here shown, a pipe 2G, h ving a series ot clischarge nozzles 27 mounted therein, is arranged directly above each mining trough 9.2 and each pipe Q6 has one end connected to a feed pipe QS whereby water may be supplied thereto. Suitable valves 29 are inter posed in each pipe 2li whereby the supply ot water to the mixing' troughs 29. may be rerulated. The form ol apparatus shown in the drawings comprises three screens having the mixing troughs 22 arranoed therebetween as particularly shown in Figure l. Each mii:- in;r trough preferably comprises an inclined wall 3l to which the lower edges of the screens 7 and 8 are secured by means ot suitable cleats 3Q, and a bottom wall 83 to which the adjacent lower screen is similarly secured b v means ot the cleats 34. The discharge side of each trough 22 preferably consists of an overflow wall over which the watery pulp fibers are discharged onto the bottom wall 33 and thence through a relatively narrow opening or gap 36 provided beneath the splash-board 37. Sin'iilarly, the splash-board 87 is arranged comparatively close to the overflow wall 35 of the mixing trough so that as the material downwardly flows between the two walls it will be evenly distributed over the surface of the adjacent lower screen. The form of nozzle 27 shown in the accompanying drawings is preferably of the t Ype shown in the prior application ot the inventor hereof, filed August 7, 1924, Serial No. 7 ,78, which has eventuated in Fatent No. 1,617,678, da'ed February l5, i927. rlhis type ot nozzle is provided with a narrow elongated discharge opening so that the water discharged therefrom will be spread in the form oi' a. sheet, as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 3, so that the partially cleaned pulp fibers discharged into the mixing, troughs 22 from the screens 7 and 8 will be thoroughly mixed with the cleansing` water as it is discharged under pressure thereinto. rEhe unclean rater and impurities, separated from the pulp through the screens 7 and 8 discharged to the inclined bottom 2i t the apparatus, is preferably cischarged nto a transverse spout 88, as waste, and may ce dischargec therefrom into a sewer or other receiving means.
From the lower mixing` bei: fibers will be discharged to the 9 and, as it downwardly travels over the suri'iace thereo'li, the major portion of the water contained therein will drain through the screen and be discharged to the lower inclined wall 39 arranged beneath the screen and from which it is discharged into a spout fil. .The water passing through the screen 9 fill be comparatively clean and may therefore be used over again. From the lower screen 9, the cleaned fibers will be discharged into a receiving` spout or trough si?, from whence it will be discharged into a suitable receivingmeans, not shown, for subsequent use in the manufacture of new paper stock.
A platform i3 is preferably arranged adjacent each screen 7. S and 9 and a staim 'ay 4A is preferably provided between each platform so that an attendant may conveniently reach any one of toe screens, should it be found necessary to clean them or in the case of repairs, and the like. The distributing pipe i6 is preiei'ably connected to the 'water feed pipe by means ot a pipe connection 4:5., having` a control valve 4:6 therein, so that should the pulp not have sufficient moisture to cause it to freely flow over the wall 2l of the receiving; box l5, additional water may be added thereto by opening the valve 4.16.
ln the operation of this novel apparatus, the pulp liber is discharged, in a watery state, into the receiving box or trough l5 adjacent the upper edge of the screen 7. From this trough it will overflow the wall 2l and pass between the narrow opening provided between the wall 21 and the silash-board 23, thence to the upper screen 7. is it downwardly travels over the surface of this screen a portion of the water contained therein will drain through the screen thereby carrying Q2, the pulp lower screen with it a portion ot the impurities contained l lli;
until the pulp i'ibers are substantially separated trein one another and liquefied to the extent that they will freely overflow thewall 35 et the raisingY trough and pass down- \.\.'ardly between this wall and the splashboard 37 adjacent the lower screen 8 to resunie their downward travel. Vlhe saine process et separatiand renmving` impurities 'frein the iibers will take place on the screen 8 so that by the tii'ne the pulp reaches the lower inixino trough 22 it will loe coinparatively clean /due to this alternate draining and adding ot water. lt will then again be thoroughly mixed with water and agitated in the lower mixingtrough and will thereafter be discharged to the lower screen 9 where the water will again be drained troni it and will be discharged into the lower receiving' spout l2 in a substantially clean state. Ars hereinhetore stated, the water passing through the screens 7 and 8 will reinove substantially all et the impurities trein the pulp and will theretore be discharged as waste into the spout 38. rlhe water passing` through the screen 9 will'be comparatively clean and may therefore be used ragain in preparing other pulp for a similar cleansing and separating process.
ln the drawings, there is shown a structure coiuprising` three separating screens and two mixing troughs but it is to be understood that any number ot such screens and mining troughs may be usen without departing Yfrom the invention.
