Description

c. H. WEICKER v BOWLING BALL RETURN CHECK Jan. 22, 1929.
Filed Dec. 17, 192'! Patented Jan. 22, 1929.
CARL H. WEICKEB, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO,
BALKE-COLLENDEB' COMPANY, OF CHICAGO,
WARE.
I 7 Application filed December 17, 1927, Serial No. 240,746,
My invention relates to bowling ball. returnways, and more particularly to devices for checking or retarding the speed-of balls being returned thereon.
An object of my invention is to provide such a device in which a brake pad is positioned over the center of the returnway so as to contact with and check any ball passing thereunder.
A further object'of my invention is to provide a device for retarding the movement of bowling balls on returnways which will be simple, inexpensive and efficient.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds. 1
Referring now to the drawings forming a part of this specification;
1 represents an end a device embodying my invention, way bein shown in section, and
Fig. 2 line 2-2 of Fig. 1 A pair of standards 1 are secured to strips 2 which constitute a returnway for bowling balls. Above the returnway the standards elevational' view of a returnare bowed outwardly to permit the passage of bowling balls on the returnway. Eac standard is integral with a vertical side 3 of a housing which has a horizontal top 4.
Pivotally mountedon a pintle 5 passing through the sides of the housing is a brake shoe 6, to which is secured a brake pad 7 A rod 8 is rigidly attached to the brake shoe, and has a spring 9.coiled thereabout. The rod extends through an opening 10 in the top of the housing and is threaded to receive nuts 11. i
Over the housing and attached thereto by any suitable means, as by screws, is a cap 12, which receives the rod 8 when the latter; is moved upwardly.
When a ball rolls on the returnway 2 it contacts with the brake pad 7 and the pressure exerted b the spring 9 tends to check the speed of e ball. is downward it may exert considerable presturnway.

sure on the ball without forcing it off the re- 'lhe housing and the caps serve as guards to prevent accidental injury ofa person by the moving parts.
The brake pad may be raised or lowered by adjusting the nuts 11 and when in a lowcred position it exercises a greater braking action.
While I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, changes may obvious-' ly be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Let-l ters Patent is:
1. The combination of a pair ofstrips con-j stituting a returnway for bowling balls, a pair of standards secured to said strips and outwardly bowedto permit a bowling ball to travel on said returnway, a housing comprising a horizontal top and vertical sides, said sides Being integral with said standards, a brake member pivoted on and movable between the sides of said housin a sprin mounted within said housing for orcing sai brake member downwardly, and means for limiting the downward movement of said brake member.
2. The combination with a bowling ball reof a ball check comprising a standard secured to said returnway, a brake housing on said standard having amopening there in, a brake member pivotally supported at one end by said housing, a rod secured at one end to said brake member and extendingthrough said opening in said housing and threaded at the other end, a spring surrounding said rod said housmg and covering said nut.
