SWITCH-OPERATING DEVZCE.
Application filed September 7, 1927, Serial No. 217,967.
This invention relates to a device for operating electrical switches, especially but not necessarily of the push button type, and has more particular reference to means for operating the actuating elen'ient or push button of a switch from a distance.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of the above kind by means of which the necessity, of providing an e tension cord with a switch on the free end thereof, is avoided.
A further object is to provide a device ct the kind specified which is simple and, durable in construction, and etiicient in operation.
The invention consists i the novel term, combination and arrang .ent of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a view showing the use of the switch operating device in connection with a wall switch of a bedroom, the device being in side elevation.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary front elevational view of the switch and operating device shown in Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a view of the device shown in Figure 2, partly in vertical section and partly in side elevation.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, 5, indicates the wall of a bedroom or a room in a hospital or the like, and in which is located thebed 6. in the wall 5 is mounted a con.- ventional form of two-button electrical snap switch 7 having a button 8 adapted to be pressed to close the switch and a button 9 adapted to be pressed to open the switch in a well known manner, the buttons being movable through. openings in a suitable face plat 10.
The present invention aims to provide means for operating the button 8 or the like from a distance, as by the occupant of the bed 6.. for any suitable purpose, such as for clos' in a cal -bell or other circuit. For this purpose, the face plate 10 is formed with a tubular boss 11 longer than and housing the button 8, and threaded on the outer end of the boss 11 is a tubular member 12 rigid with and provided between the connected ends of the legs of a li shaped bracket 13. A bell-crank Renewed December 3, 1828.
lever 14 is pivoted intermediate its ends to and between the lower free ends of the legs 15 of the bracket 13, and pivoted to the upper end of the lever 14 is the outer end of a push rod 16 which passes inwardly through the member 12 and enters the boss 11 to engage the outer end of button 8. The lower arm of lever 1% projects rearwardly and has one end of a pull cord 1'! attached to the lower end thereof.
In view of the above, it will be seen that when an outward pull is exerted on the cord 1'? the button 8 will be pressed by plunger or rod 16 to close the switch, and by extending the core. to the bed 6, the operation may be effected by occupant of the latter. When the button 8 is returned to its outward position, as by pressing on button 9 to open the switch, the switch closing operation may be repeated. lit is preferable to use a two-but ton snap switch for hospital use so that the nurse must answer the. call in order to operate the button 9 and open the switch and the callbell or signal circuit controlled by the latter.
Minor changes may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
1. The combination with a push button switch, of a face plate having a tubular boss housing the push button of said switch, a bracket mounted on said boss, a lever pivoted to said bracket and having a pull member at tached to one end thereof, and a plunger pivoted to the other end of said lever and slidably projecting into the boss and in engagement with the push button.
2. The combination with a two-button snap switch, of a face plate having a tubular boss for housing the switch closing button, a plunger slidable in the boss, and a lever piv otally mounted on the boss and having one end connected to said plunger, and a U- shaped bracket having a tubular member rigid with and between the connected ends of the legs thereof tl'lreadcd on said boss, said lever being pivoted intermediate its ends to and between the tree ends of the legs of said bracket. y
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CHARLES J. STEVENS.
