Objects of this invention are to provide a boiler which is so constructed that an upper water grate and a lower grate are provided and to so construct the air intake for the boiler and associate it with these grates that a substantially smokeless combustion of fuel takes place, and in which the gases are drawn downwardly through the upper water grate and are passed into the burning flame from the lower grate.
Further objects are to provide a boiler in which a positive and rapid circulation of water takes place, thus permitting a free liberation of steam and insuring a highly efficient use of the boiler heating` surface, and a clean surface in the boiler due to the scouring action of the rapidly circulating water. i y
Further objects are to provide a boiler in which the incoming air is preheated by the radiated heat from the entire unit, and in which the air is supplied to both grates in a. distributed and effective manner.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanyingr drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the boiler.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the front end of the boiler.
Figure 3 isa rear view of the boiler.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the boiler comprises a metal drum 1 equipped with a plurality of iiues arranged in two groups indicated by reference characters 2 and 3. The lowest portion of the boiler is connected by means of a short relatively large pipe 4 with a transverse bottom header 5. Also the bottoni header receives the return pipe 6 for the boiler when the boiler is employed for heating purposes. The ends of the header 5 are connected by means of upwardly extending pipe 7 with a transverse front header 8. From this header a plurality of pipes 9 extend upwardly in a slanting manner to the upper portion of the main boiler body.
It is to be noted that the pipes 7 are positioned outside of the furnace or fire box and join the headers 5 and 8. The bottom grate 10 is provided for the fire box and is 4tired through the door 11 it desired. As previously stated, the pipes 9 form an upper water grate which is tired through the door 12, the coal also falling through this grate and upon the grate 10, although it is to be understood that the grate 10 maybe "Separately lired, if desired, in addition to the above described Inode of operation.
It is to be noted that the headers 5 Vand 8 are provided with end plugs or caps to facilitate their Cleaning. Further it is to be noted from reference to Figures 1 and 2, that the front header 8 is provided Withfa pluralityV of plugs 13 which` are in alignment with the pipes 9, and thus permit ready cleaning of these pipes.
It is to be noted from Figure lthat the lire box is provided with aplurality of apertures 14 through its upper arched wall, and that the sides and end of the ash pit are provided wbith apertures 15 through `which air is supplied. This air is preheated by `being held in Contact with the boiler and furnace proper by means ofthe outer shell 16 which is spaced a slight distance from the boiler and from the furnace proper.
It is to be noted from Figure l that the rear end of the casing 16 is open for the entrance oi air. This end is controlled by means of a ring-like darn er 17. This damper is guided by means o a plurality of lugs 18, las shown in Figure 3, and may be manipulated by means of a handle 19. Obviously, this damper may be either manually or automatically controlled. At this end of the boiler a door 2O is provided and iS hinged to stationary ears 21 on diametrically opposed sides so that it may swing from either set of ears when the appropriate pintle bolt is removed. It is to be noted that this door` closes the rear compartment 22 which receives the gases from the bottom set of iiues 3 and returns the gases through the Hues 2, the gases finally passing upwardly through the stack 23.
It is to be noted from referenceto Figure 1 that the boiler is provided with a downwardly extending arch 211 which cuts oif communication between the upper bank of flues 2 and the tire box and provides a conduit for the outwardly passing gases.
It is to be noted from reference to Figures 1 and 2, that the up er shell surrounding the upper portion of t e tire box is preferably formed of a plurality of arches of iron, as indicated at 25, and these arches carry fire resistinglnaterial 26, as indicated. From reference particularly to Figure 2, itwill be Seen that the space between the shell and Yso the boiler extends downwardly upon opposite sides of the fire box and, as previously described, communication is established between the fire box and this space by means of the apertures 15.
It will be seen, therefore, that a very eliicient boiler has been provided in which the air is preheated and absorbs the heat otherwise passed off as wasted radiated. heat. This preheated air aids in securing perfect and smokeless combustion and when passed to the upper and lower grate in the manner described substantially smokeless combustion results,
If the furnace is to be used with an oil burner, the lower grate is removed and the upper grate is covered on its upper side with tile or fire brick. Under these conditions, the heating of the air and the circulation of the water takes place, as previously described.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously ein bodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.
I claim:
A boiler com rising a lire box, a drum located rearwarc ly of said lire box, a front transverse header located in the front of the fire box and supplied from ad'acent the lower portion of said boiler, a plurality of upwardly and rearwardly slanting pipes connecting said header and said drum and constituting a water grate, a lower grate located below said pipes, a shell surrounding said fire box and boiler' and providing an air preheating space, said shell opening adjacent the rear end of said boiler, said fire box having apertures in its upper and lower portion, said boiler having a plurality of rearwardly extending flue pipes opening at their entrance ends into the fire-box and at outlet rear ends into a smoke box and having a plurality of forwardly extending flue pipes opening at their entrance ends into the smoke box and at their outlet ends communicating with a smoke stack, whereby the forward portion of said shell is unobstructed by the smoke stack, said boiler having a downwardly extending arch projecting into the fire-box and extending rearwardly y .I AMES SPEAKMAN CLAY.
