Theobject of this invention is to provide an improved flashing for use between a roof and a fire-wall, which is so arranged as to be ment of the roof and wall has occurred.
' A further object is to provide an improved interlocking flashing, one member of which is mounted rigidly in a wall and the other member of which is interlocked therewith and depends in inclined position over the joint between the wall and a roof.
A further object is to provide an improved interlocking flashing as above set forth in combination with a combined cant and settling strip attached to the roof and contacting with the wall in a manner to permit relative movement therebetween so that effective provision is made for covering the j oint' between the roof and wall irrespective of any settling which may occur.

invention consists in the construction, ar-

In the construction as shown the numeral 10 designates generallya fire-wall, 11 a rafter and 12 sheathing boards of a roof which is arranged somewhat below'the top of the wall and in abutting relation thereto. The numeral 13 is used to designate a flexible roof covering over the sheathing boards.
In constructions of this kind it is very difficult to form a rain-tight joint between the roof and fire-wall because settling or relative movement is apt to occur and break the sealing of the joint. I have provided a flashing which will overcome this difliculty by permitting some elements to move relative to the others, the water-proof element such as the roof covering 13 moving therewith and still remaining in position to cover the joint.
A strip 14 of wood is provided which extends lengthwise of the joint and has one margin secured to the sheathin 12 at a point spaced somewhat from the wa l, as by nails formed at one margin with a lateral flange 19 1926. Serial lb. 107,967.

siderable space therewith, but is not secured thereto. This strip may be called a combined cant strip and settling strip, as it. has the usual function of a cant strip and further permits settling of the roof without breaking the joint. t is rather wide as compared with the usual cant strip, being six or eight inches in vertical width. The flexible roof covering 13 is extended up the outerface of the strip 14 substantially to the top. and is mopped thereto in a common manner.
lnterlocking flashing strips of sheet metal are provided and indicated by the numerals 17 and 18. The horizontal strip 17 is laid between courses of brick or other members of the wall 10 and rigidly held thereimit being in contact with elements of the wall. The strip 17 is also formed with a series of apertures 20 which receive mortar or cement of the wall and assist in holding the strip rigidly in place. The strip 17 is formed on its other margin with a downturned flange 21 terminating in an inwardly directed hook flange 22 arranged horizontally and opening toward the wall and slightly spaced therefrom. The horizontal strip 17 is spaced a slight distance above the upper margin of the combined cant and settling strip 14. The strip 18 is formed at its upper margin with a lateral flange 23 adapted to be received within the hook flange 22 of the horizontal strip and interlock therewith. The interlockin engagement is effected after the horizonta strip is in place and after the settling strip has been placed and the roof element 13 secured thereto, and it brings the flashing strip 18 into substantial contact with the roof element 13 along the upper margin of the settling strip 14:. The interlocking engagement is made permanent by pinching the hook flange 22 upon the flange 23 by the use of pliers or other suitable tool.
This provides an effective means for covering the joint between the roof and wall, and if any settling of the roof occurs the settling strip 14, and with it the portion of roofin 5 movement may occur without afl'ecting the 11 joint. 1115 strip 14 preferably is provided with' proper the nails 15. v
