STA-'ras PATENT OFFICE.
PEDRO 'SALAVERRI TELLECHEa, oF SANASAABASTI'AN, SPAIN.
FURNAcEAND STEAMBO'ILER Finn-B0X SYSTEM-.
Appucationalea March 1449227, serial- No. 175,061, and Vnospam February 15, v1927'.
. The present invention referstofurnace and steam-boiler fire-box systems fand especially refers to a .piocess' fo'r.doing away with the grating of such {ire-box, which, upto present,
5 hasbeen-lookedupon as being 'an indispensable element inr the production ofthe draught necesasry-.to-:effect a perfect burning of the fuel..
Apart from effecting an advantage of a saving nature, which, in itself is of sufficient importance, and of realizing a technical advance in industry, the invention affords the outstanding advantage 'of being able to make use of any kind of fuel together with the suppression of smoke. In accordance with the present process, both coal and residues thereof as well as sawdust, furze or any other low cost fuel may be used', all'of which will obtain the maximum caloric yield up to its being entirely consumed.
The attached drawings show, by way of example, a form of carrying the invention into effect and in them z- Fig. 1 shows the section of a furnace drawn up in accordance with the invention,
Fig. 2 shows a plan detail of the same.
Fig. 3 shows Y a front vie-w of a furnace made as per the invention; and
Fig. 4 Shows a detail of one of the plates 5"" and its operating lever.
As will be seen from the drawings, a (irebox made in accordance with the invention is composed of the following elements:
lt being supposed (sce Fig. 1) that the necessary heating has to be supplied to a boiler or furnace l, the latter will be built with the. front wall of fireproof or other suitable material On this wall is mounted a sliding door 4 operated at 3 by any known means allowing of its being gradually raised or lowered to given distances and leavingr an opening 4 for the purposes to be stated later.
The fire-box grating is formed by a flooring entirely composed of plates 7 laid in echelon one overlapping the other and which, under normal conditions, furnish a flooring competely joined and sealed on which the coai thrown in through hopper 5 will rest, the hopper being provided with a sliding door 6 or something similar thereto.
These plates 7 are susceptible of being operated in the direction shown by the dotted line of Fig. 1 by means of levers 8 which raise same and allow them to pivot on aide 12 which maintains the plates fixed at one point, and the pivot 11 allowing of the. articulationfof said 'lever on thefplate. Each lever 8 has 2.,.
notches 14 made thereinI which allow of its being hookedr into a lfixed pOSitionfont'rods or projectingpoints 13 provided .in [the "inner walls'ofthe'Iire-box.' i
The working is as follows F uel is thrown into hopper 5 and, by reason of the slopinor position of said hopper, it is distributed alDong the surface of the plates. Once the coal is inside, the hopper is closed by sliding door 6^, the fuel then being set on fire at the most convenient point. As will be easily understood from this, the sliding door 4 of the fire-box serves to regulate the thickness of the fuel layer and as an inlet for same through space 4.
Once the fuel is set on lire, any one of the vplates is raised (in case of a strong combustion being required, several could be lifted) and for this reason the following effect will be produced lhere will be started a draught directly to the chimney of the fire-box coming through the space made by the plate being raised and said draught will follow the direction shown by arrows in F ig. 1. The force of this draught will have the san'ieefect as a blowpipe on the burning fuel, the flame of this socalled blowppe being applied directly on the wall of the boiler adjacent to thel lire-box.
A. successive working of the plates will perinil. the regulation of the intensity of the combustion and the progressive or simultaneous burning of the whole fuel layer, thereby realizing a perfect graduation of the intensity of the fire, and an absolute regulation of the fuel being burned.
On the other hand, the direct action of the air, permits the utilization of any kind of fuel without fear of obstruction or of defects in the fuel due to the constant activity of the draught given to the combustion process.
It will be understood from what has been stated, that the invention will still continue bsist even in the vcase of different means C: application being adopted necessary to the exigencies of the cases that m.y appear 1n practice, such as the application of the invention toindustrial tire-boxes, furnaces, moylng or stationary steam-boilers, heating bOlleFS etc. Also the elements employed to carry the` invention into effe'ct could be made of any kind of material Aadequate for the purpose in.
each case.
I claim:
1. A furnace comprising a fuel-receiving hopper, a plurality of normally inclined' plates adjacent the outlet of said hopper and combining to ormthe ,grateo the furnace, means for regulating the passage of fuel from said hoppertosaid' grate, andmeanslor separately varying the inclination of each of said plates. Y' I' l 2. A furnace comprising a. fuel-receiving hopper, a 'plurality of lates adjacent t-he outletef'said hopper, sai 'plates being normally inclined away from said' outlet and combining t-o form. the' grate of the furnace, operating levers attached to said plates for separately var ing their inclination, and means for selectively supporting each of said operating levers in a plurality ofpositions.
3. A furnace comprising a fuel-receiving hopper, a plurality of normally inclined and pivotaljly supported plates constituting the grate proper of the furnace, a notched lever pi-veted-.toieach pl'atefor individually varying its inclination, a. rod engaging in the notches ofeacl'i levert@ supportC the'associated plate in any adjusted position, and a sliding door disposed' between said lhopper and grate and movable toward and' awayv from saidA grate to regulate the passage of fuel from the hopper to the grate.
In testimony whereof I havev aflixed my signature.
