In the particular embodiments of the invention illustrated, the shield isV formed of a single piece of wire bentto provide the longitudinally extending expansible'portions and the laterally extending flanges. In certain ally expansible portions and in other forms, there are two expansible portions, but it will be understood that the Wire may be bent to form any desired number of, expansible portions. an expanding element of greater length than the length of the shield whereby the element will engage and force laterally the inner ends of the loops.

In combination, an expansion shield formed of wire and havingfa plurality of expansible sections, each section comprising an elongated loop, said shield having laterally extending flanges at the outer end thereof, and a flanged expanding elementof greater length thanthe length of the shield whereby the element will engage and force laterally the inner ends ofthe loops.

In combination, an expansion shield formed of Wire and having a plurality of expansible sections, each section comprising an elongated loop closed at its inner end, and a drive expanding element of greater length than the length of the shield whereby the i element will engage and force laterally the inner ends of the loops.
15. An expansion shield formed of wire and comprising a plurality of laterally ex pansible portions, each portion consisting of a loop closed at its inner end, and a plurality of radially disposed flanges at the outer ends of said shield.

A new article of manufacture comprising a wire expansion shield formed of wire bent back on itself to form a longitudinally extending bore, said bore being surrounded by a'maximum of four parallel and longitudinally extending strands of Wire and*` having a wire head at an angle to the par-v allel strands of wire.
17. A new article of manufacture comprising a Wire expansion shield formed of wire bent back on itself to form four parallel longitudinally extending strands of wire and an integral Wire head formed in tWo parts.
18. In an expansion shield the combination of a wire shield formed by bending strands of wire back on themselves so that when expanded the shield will have a primary radial expansion in one direction, and a secondary radial expansion in a dierent direction, and
l an expanding member adapted to first 'cause the primary radial expansion in one direction .on partial insertion ofV the expanding member, and cause the secondary radial expansion the complete insertion of the expanding member. i -f 19. In an expansion shield the combination of a wire shield formed by bending strands of wire back on themselves to form parallel and longitudinally extending strands so that when expanded the shield will have a primary radial expansion in one l direction, and a,
secondary radial expansion in a different direction, and an expanding member adapted to first cause the primary expansion in one direction on partial insertion of the expanding member, and cause the secondary expansion of the wire shield in a different direction onV radial expansion in a different direction, and
an ordinary nail adapted Vto first cause the primary expansion of the wire shield in one direction on partial insertion of the nail, and to cause the secondary expansion of the wire shield in a different direction on the complete insertion of the nail.
21. An expansion shield comprising a plurality of longitudinally extending expansible loops, each loop extending throughout the length of the shield and having its outer end bent laterally to form a flange, the flanges formed on the loops being angularly disposed relative to each other.
