GARBAGE BAG.
Application filed Septemberl, 1927. Serial No. 220,974.
This invention relates to garbage containers, and the primary Object is to provide a sanitary, efiicient and practical Construction of bag, into which the garbage can be placed and in which it can be kept and finally sealed and carried to a larger garbage can or incinerator where it is disposed of together with the garbage it contains. Larger sizes of these bags may be used to advantage in hotels, restaurants and other places having large quantities of garbage to dispose of, but its greatest utility will be found in homes and apartments where it is desirable, and 'frequently compulsory under city ordinances, to wrap the garbagebefore placingit in the larger containers, for Collection. Furtherand more specific Objects will be disclosed in the course of the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in
Which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of niy improved garbage bag, a fractional portion being broken away for purpose of illustration.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the bag as seen when closed, to seal the contents.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of one of the securing strips employed.
Referring to the drawing more particularv ly and by reference characters A designates the body of the bag, the same being provided with the usual gores or folds B whereby the bag can be folded together and handled in a flat condition before being used. While the bag proper is of substantially Common and well known Construction, it is important that it be suitably treated, by paraflining, oiling, or similar process, so as to render it waterproof.
The upper end of the bag is provided with an annular inturned fiange or flap C, which is of sufiicient width to stifl'en and reinforce the open end of the bag. This flap Cis preferably secured against the adjacent walls of'the bag. and this may be accoinplished by firmly pressing them together, during the above noted waterproofing process.
The bag is provided at one side, i. e., the rear portion as shown in Fig. 1, with a series of spaced, easily bendable, metallic strips D, Which are secured in any suitable manner, such as by a perforating lip E, or by an adhesive. As these strips are not connected they will ofvcourse not interfere with the Opening or closing of the bag, and being arranged betwen the flap C and the adjacent bag wall they are entirely unseen and out of the way. i
The bag may be set-on the floor or table in the kitchen,.but is preferably set in a pail or basket to give it better stability. When it has been sufficiently lilled to be sealed and carried away the operator brings the two upper,
edge portions of the bag together, and then folds these portions over together on a straight line approximately midway of the flap C. Such a line may be scored or printed on the bag, if desirable, so as to render it more easily to detei'inine the proper line of the fold. The fold must of course be made so that the side of the bag having the strips D will be on top, thereby causing the strips to pinch thebag ends together when they are bent over and closed by the operator. The bag` is now sealed and can be carried away, as desired, and substituted by another bag.
It is understood that suitable modiications may be made in the general design and structural details of the invention as herein shown and described, provided, however, that said 'modifications come within the spirit and scope oi' the appended claims. Having now therefore fully shown and described my invention, what T claim to be new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. A garbage bag having the enti're edge of its open end reinforced by a fiange of the bag folded thereagainst, and a series of spaced, bendable strips carried by one side of the bag at its upper end, said strips being secured between said flange and the adjacent wall portion Of the bag.
2. A garbage container comprising a waterproof bag having a series of bendable clamping strips secured in spaced relation about its upper edge whereby said strips may hold the bag closed when the same is folded over on a line traversing the strips, said bag having an inturned flange extending entirely about its upper end, and said strips being arranged between the flange and the adjacent Wall portion.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
MARITH X. AASEN.
