Description

I.W. HOAGLAND.
LUBRICATOR. NO 169809, Patented Nov.9, 1875.
UNITED STATES PATENT CEFIGE.
ISAAC W. HOAGLAND, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO RICHARD J. CHARD AND WILLIAM IEIOWE,i NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN LUBRICATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,80).dated November 9, 1875; application filed September 10, 1875.
To att whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC W. HOAGLAND, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification."
This invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of automatic lubrioators for shafting; and has for its object to provide for conveniently ascertaining the amount of pressure upon the shafting by the rod which passes through said lubricator, so that such pressure may be correctly graduated.
It has been found that in lubricatorsv heretofore in use| there is no provision made for this purpose, and, in consequence thereof, it is impossible to ascertain and graduate the pressure correctly; and it frequently happens that there is not sufficient pressure and consequent friction to produce the requisite amount of heat in the rod to dissolve the lubricating compound, or, on the contrary, that the pressure is too great, in consequence ofwhich deep grooves will be cut in the shafting. This invention is to overcome this difficulty, and is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a vertical cross-section of a lubricator combining my improvements, which consist in having the rod A to pass entirely through the lubricator, and project from the top thereof far enough to permit its being grasped by the thumb and fingers, in order to ascertain or test the amount of pressurev thereon, which may be done by simply raising or pulling upon said rod, as will be readily understood..
rlhe lubrieator is provided with an adjustable screw-cap, B, by means of which the pressure upon the rod A may be increased or diminished at pleasure, said rod being provided with a suitable spring, a., operating in conjunction therewith, as shown and indicated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States, is-
In an automatic lubricator for shafting, the combination, with the oil-cup, of a rod, A, provided with a spring, a, and adjustable screwcap B, said rod extending through and above the screw-cap, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention, I affix hereto my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC W. HOAGLAND.
