The arm 15 projects inwardly beyond its pivot 16, and to its inner end is attached a Vertical actuating rod 22 which carries a roller 23 which engages the under side of a cam 24 fixed to a cam-shaft 25 mounted ina fixed support above the hopper. The upper endiof the rod 22 is provided with a guide slot 26 through which the cam-shaft 25 extends, the rod 22 being retained on the cam-shaft by a suitable retaining washer 27 on the cam-shaft. The
' cam-shaft 25 has fixed thereto a belt pulley 28', over which runs a belt 29 which extends from a pulley 30 secured upon the crank shaft 4. 7
As the segment'plate 17 is moved from its lowermost position through the loose mass of blanks 11 in the hopper 8, some of these blanks will drop into the groove 2-0 and assume a position therein, in which the upper enlarged portion12 fits in the upper enlarged portion of the groove, and the smaller lower end portion of the blank extends into the narrower lower portion of the groove, such blanks being supported with their large ends uppermost. As the plate 17 approaches its'uppermost position, its upper edge will be inclined at an angle such that any blanks resting ;upon the top of the plate, but not properly positioned in the groove will roll 1 off the plateand drop-back into the hopper. The cam 24 is so shaped that the plate 17 will have a dwell in its uppermost position in alignment with the chute 9 suflicient to permit over and adjacent the top of the rotary carrier or table 5, and directly over the pockets 7 of the carrier the chute is provided with a discharge aperture 32 through which the blanks may pass one at a time into the pockets of the carrier. A feeding device is provided for feeding a blank from the chute into each pocket of the carrier, and the endmost blank in the chute is normally held against falling through the aperture'32 by means of a U-shaped retaining spring 33, the legs of which extend along opposite sides of the aperture andreceive between them the lower small end of the blank. The dis charge end of the chute has alcover-plate 34; provided with an aperture 34; which registers with the discharge aperture 32, and the blanks are dischargedfrom the'chute into the into the pockets 7 by a yielclingly supported punch 35 carried by the movable head 2 of the press. The carrier 5 is indexed during each upward stroke of the head 2 of the press to bring an empty pocket 7 directly beneath the discharge'aperture 32 of the chute, and upon downward movement of the head the punch 35 moves downwardly through the aperture 3 1 into engagement with the endmost blank supported upon the legs of the spring 33, forcing the blank down into the pocket ofthe carrier. Thevpunch 35 is slidably mounted in a casing 36"fixed to the under sideof the head 2, and has at its upper end a head 37 which is engagedby a compression spring 38 interposed between the head 37 and the bottomof the'press head 2. The punch 35 is thus yieldably supported so that the mechanism will not be damaged should a blank become jammed in the discharge end of the chute.
Each of the pocket 7 of the carrier is provided with an insert 39 which. has a central bore 40 to receive the lower ends of the blanks 11, and a counter-bore 41 in which the enlarged packing receiving ends 12 of, the blanks fit, the insert 39 forming a rigid support for the blanks. Fig. 2 of the drawingshows the actuating arm 52 in the position which-it occupies at the completion of the down stroke of the press head 2. As the vpresshead moves up wardly, the actuating-arm =52will be swung toward the left from the positionshown in Fig. 2, in which movement the pawl 61 will ride off the retaining plate 64 and engage in' the vnotch 59 immediately to the left of said retaining plate. Before the table 5may be actuated by the arm 52, the retaining latch -65 must be disengaged from the table, and
this is accomplished by the trip projection 73 of the arm 52 during the idle movement of the arm 52 before the pawl 61 engages in a notch 59. The interengaging faces 75 of the projection 73and 72 of the trip member 68 being both'inclined with respect to the longit-udinal axis of the latch 65, the engagement of the projection 73with the trip member 68 will force thelatch 65 outwardly againstt'he action of the spring G'T'sufiiciently to" allow the projection 73 to pass the-trip member 68 and to shift the latch 65 clear of the notch (SO-in whic'hit is engaged by thetimethat the pawl (jl has engaged in the notch 59 to shift the carrier. Along the front of the supporting bed 1. there is secured a supporting block 78, the upper edge of which is substantially at the level of the top of the table 5, and this block forms a support for a reciprocating feed plate? 9 which is adapted to carrya strip of packing material directly over the outer edge portion of the carrier table. The plate 79 is provided with a retaining flange 80 along its inner edge, and 011 the portion thereof overlying the table there is secured a stripper plate8l, which is undercut at 82 to provide a slotfor the passage of a strip 82:3 of suitable packingmatcrial, such as rubber. After each indexing ,movement, the carrier is stopped, with a pocket 7 containing one of the valve blanks, directly beneath anelon'gated slot 84 in the plates 79 and 81. The strip 83 ofpacking material lies between the plates I 79 and 81, and extends across the slot 84. A punch 85 is rigidly secured to the head'2 of the press, and is positioned in axial alignment with a valve blank in the pocket 7 beneath the plate 79. The punch 85'is substantially the same in diameter as the recess 13 of the blank, so that as the unch 85 moves clown- 'wardly through the slot 84 it will press the rubber strip 83 against the upper end of the blank 11, and the upper cup-shaped end of the blank 11 will'act as a die to sever a circular piece of packing which is forced into the recess 13 by the punch To prevent adhesion between the severed 'g'iacking and the lower end of the punch'85, the punch has an axial passageway extending to its lower end, which communicates with a flexible conduit 85 extending from the punch 85 to a suitable source of air under pressure. Air pressure is admitted to the punch at the end of the down stroke of the press head, and enables the punch to be separated from the packing which has been forced into the valve inemberwithout loosening the packing or dis lodging it from the valve memben. The strip 83 of packing 'material is yieldingly held against the retaining flange by a spring actuated pressure finger 86, and may be shifted by the operator, out of alignment with the slot 84, by means of a manually operable trip arm 87 which engages with the strip along the inner edge thereof.

The other arm of the bell crank 88 is connected to a vertical actuating rod 92 which has a lateral extension 93 at its lower end connected to said arm. The rod 92 is actuated in one direction by the reciprocating head 2 of the press as the head approaches its uppermost position and in the opposite direction as the head approaches its lowermost position, the rod 92 being slidably engaged by a bracket 94 secured to the head2. A block 95 is adj'ustabl-y secured to the ver. tical rod 92 by means of a taper pin 96, and is supported by a lever 97 which is mounted on a fixed support and carries a laterally projecting pin 98 against which the lower end of the block 95 rests, the lever 97 being pro vided with a spring 99 which serves to yield-' inglv take the weight of the block 95 and rod 92. The rod 92 is actuated by the bracket 94,
only when the head approaches its uppermost position, and when the head approaches. its lowermost positon, the upper end of the rod 92 being providedat its upper end with a butter spring 100, which is engaged by the bracket 94 in its upward movement, and with a. butler spring 101 resting upon the upper end of the block 95 which is engaged by the bracket 94 in its downward movement. The lever 97 has a serrated upper edge 102 which engages with a triangular pin 103 which projects from the inner side if the block 91 on the feed plate 79. As the press head 2 approaches its upper limit of movement, the bracket 94 engages the buffer spring and lifts the rod 92, swinging the bell-crank 88 about its pivot, and moving the plate 79 to the left shown in Fig. 1. As the plate 79 is moved by the bell-crank 88, the triangular Din 103 slides over the serrated edge 102 of the lever 97, and as the rod 92 is released by the downward n'ioven'ient of the head, 2, the engagement of the triangular pin103 with the serrated. edge 102 of the lever 97 holds the teed plate 79 in he positionto which it has been moved by the bell crank 88. A return spring 104 is connected to the plate 79 and to the bed 1, and acts when the plate 79 is released to shift the plate 79 in a directionopposite that in which it had been previously moved bythe bell-crank 88. During this return movement f the plate 7 9 the punch 85 is in engagement with the packing strip 83 andholds the strip against movement with thefeeder plate. Thus, upon each reciprocation of the head 2, the strip 83 of packing material is moved forwardly a sufiicient distance to bring an unperforated portion thereof to position over beneath the punch 85.
After the packing has been inserted into a valve member and the valve member with the ackin therein has been shifted bthe carrier to another position with respect to the head, the packing within the valve memher is pierced by a punch 105 fixed to the head 2. The punch 105 is so positioned that it is in axial alignment with a valve member in one of the pockets 7, and is of a size to substantially fit into the bore 14 of the valve member, so that when the punch 105 engages punch 105 also serves to discharge the valve members from, the carrier table, the friction a-l engagement between the packing withinthe valve member and the punch 105 being sufficient to cause the valve member to be lifted by the punchout of the pocket 7..
The punch 105 is provided with a follower lower end of the punch, and is provided with an aperture through which the punch. is
forced when the follower 106 engages the top of the rotary table. The follower 106 is suspended from the head2 by means of vertical bolts 107, whichare secured at their lower ends to the follower 106, and are slidably mounted at their upper ends in the head 2. The bolts 107 have heads 108, slidable in counter-bores 109 in the head 2, and the follower 106 is yieldingly held in its lowermost position with respect to thehead 2 by springs 110' surrounding the bolts/107 and interposed between the head 2 and the follower 106. Asthe head 2 moves downwardly,

The pivot 117 is provided with a spring washer 118, which causes a suflicient friction between the wiper arm and the side wall of the chute to normally hold the arm in any position to which it is moved. The engagement of the projection 119 with the post 112 causes the wiper arm 116 tobe swung up wardly so that during the return movement of the arm 52, the wiper arm 116 engages the under face of the follower 106 and will brush a valve member sticking to the follower into the chute. The follower 106 has sufilcient downward movement during the movement of the wiper arm 116 across its under face to move the wiperarm to its lowermost position.
In the operation of the machine the rotary carrier table 5 is positioned, during each downward stroke of the head 2 of the press, with certain of the pockets 7 thereof directly beneath and in axial alignment with the various punches carried by the head. Upon the up stroke of the head 2 ofthe press, the rotary table 5 is indexed by the actuating arm 52 which in its movement releases the table from its holding latch and shifts the table through an angul ar dist ancecorresp on din gto the angular-distance between the pockets 7, the valve member engaged by the punch 105 being at thesametime lifted out of its pocket in the rotary carrier table 5 and discharged'into the chute 114:.
Having described my invention, 1' claim 1. In a machine for applying packing to cup-shaped valve members, a'carrierhaving spaced pockets in which said valve members fit, a reciprocating head associated with the carrier, means for'moving the carrier intermittently in timed relation to the stroke of the head, means for feeding valve members one at a time into the pockets, means for feeding aistrip of packing material over a pocket of the carrier, a punch carried by the head and cooperating with a valve" member topunch a washer-from the strip and force the same intothe valve members, and means carried by the head for lifting the valve members from the pockets and discharging the same.

A machine for applying packing to cupsha-ped valve members comprising a press having a bed and a reciprocating head mov able toward and from the bed, a rotary table on the bed having pockets therein, adapted to hold valve members open end up, said pockets being regularly spaced circumferentially of the table, a plurality of punches carried by the j head and spaced to cooperate with valve members in separate pockets of the table, I
feeding a strip of packing material over a v portion of the table beneath one of said punches.

A machine for applying packing to cup shaped valve members comprising a press having a bed and a reciprocating head movable toward and from. the bed, means on the bed for, rigidly supporting'a valve member open end up,a punch carried by the head, said pun-ch being of a size to conform to the in-- terior of the valve member and adapted to coact with the valve member to force a washer into the valve member, said punch having a passageway therethrough leading to its lower end, and means for supplying air under pressure to said punch to prevent the washer from sticking to the punc r 1.
