IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIN-LINKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 69,731, dated November 9, 1875 application led October 16, 1875.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ROEMER, of Newark, in the countyT of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chains, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to an improvement in that class of chains in which the contiguous links are connected by an eye that is fastened to one link and loosely embraces the other.
Heretofore, in such chains, each eye was formed of a separate strip of metal, riveted or soldered at both of its ends to the link with which it was to be connected.
My invention consists in making the link and the eye in one piece, so that only one end ofthe strip forming the eye need be riveted to the link.
The letters A A A in the drawing represent a series of links composing my improved chain. These links may be made of metal, hard rubber, or other material, and are of annular or suitable form. Each link A is provided and made in one piece, With a projecting strip, a, which, in the drawing, is shown to project from the inner edge of the annular link diametrically across the hole in the link, but
which has its outer end disconnected to allow it to be bent, as hereinafter described. Each of these strips a is bent backward-i. ef., doubled over-and the eye thus formed is made to embrace the next link of the chain. The free end of each strip a is thereupon riveted by a rivet, d, or otherwise fastened to the face of the saine link on Which it is formed.
The ends ofthe chain may be provided with hooks and eyes B, or other suitable fasteningdevices.
By the above construction the strength of the chain is greatly increased and its appearance improved, as each link Will be perfectly smooth on one face, which in use should be the outer or exposed face.
By this invention, also, material is saved, as the strip a is `about one-fourth shorter than it must be Whenever it is not made as part of the blank. I
This chain, made according to my invention, may be used for all the purposes for which chains are or may be now employedsuch as Watch-chains, belts, Src.
I claim as my inventionu A chain-link, A, made in one piece with the projecting strip a, which forms the eye for joining the contiguous link, substantially as described.
