This invention relates to improvements in rocking chairs and particularly to one especially adapted for porch and otheroutdoor use though the chair is not necessarily confined to such use.

The principal object of my invention is to provide a rocking chair constructed of a number of flexibly connected parts so arranged that said chair has extremely easy rocking qualities through a long range of movement with butv a minimum amount of movement of the flexible connections of the various parts and consequently a minimum of wear of such connections. Further the chair is so constructed that it is practically impossible to upset the same while. it is occupied and being rocked as is frequently the case with chairs having the ordinary t )e of curved rockers.

he further object of the invention is to construct the rocking chair so that the portion thereof which is supported by the floor does not move and consequently the chair does mar a polished floor.

A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purpose for which it is designed.

These objects 'I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement parts as will fully appear by a perusal of,

the following specification and claim.

Fig. 1 is a perspective elevation of my improved chair shown in its normal unoccupied position.

Referring now more particularly to the numerals of reference on the drawings, 1

denotes a pair of horizontal base members disposed in transverse and suitably'spaeed relation and arranged to rest on and engage the floor throughout their full extent.

Pivoted on to the rear ends of the members 1 as at 2 and'extcnding at a forward and upward angle thereto I are arms 3, rigidly connected at their upper ends by a flat cross bar 4. Projecting at a rearward and upward angle from the forward ends of the members 1 are other arms 5' which are 3 and extend therepast These arms are of rocking movement rigidl connected together at their upper ends y a flat cross bar 6. At their lower ends these arms have rollers or castors 7 which ride on grooved tracks 8 provided at the forward ends of the members 1.

Similar and also substantially horizontal links 10 are pivotally connected to the arms 3 just below the cross bar 4 and to the corresponding arms 5 substantially centrally of the length of the latter. The links 10 also form supports'for the arm rests 11 which are rigidly secured thereon.

The bars 4 and 6 form supports for the opposite .ends of a seat and back support which is preferably a double length of suitable fabric 12 which is doubled about said bars and has a considerable sag therebetween as shown. To possibly prevent the rollers 7 from jumping the tracks, tension springs 13 extend between the arms 5 and the members'l near the rollers, Since the chair is especially designed for exterior use the various arms, links and corresponding parts are made of a good grade of wood, treated with weather resisting paintjwhile the. fabric ofthe said member 12 is of a nature which will properly withstand exposure to the elements.

"he parts of the chair are so balanced that the arms 5 will be normally maintained at a considerable angle to a vertical plane as shown in Fig. 2 while the arms 3 are more nearly disposed in a vertical plane. Owing to the arrangement of these parts relative to each other a person seated in the chair in a natural relaxed position and imparting a rocking movement to the chair causes the relative position of the arms 3 and 5, and consequently the relative levels of the cross bars 4 and 6, to be altered to a considerable extent with but very slight movement of the rollers being had as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The above noted arrangementalso enables such considerable extent to behad with but little physical effort on the part of the occupant of the chair being necessary since a slight downward pressure on the lower cross bar 4 is all that is necessary to cause the back arms 5 to follow up sue movement of the bar 4 and its arms and cause the desired rocking movement to be imparted to the chair.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
