JORDAN-ENGINE-SHELL LINING.
Application filed April 13, 1925. Serial No. 22,567.
ing greatly in time and costs involved in the more common practice of assembling the lin- 4 ings piece by piece in the shells,
To this end, I provide in the practice of my invention a metaljacket approximating 1n shape and size the inner conformation of the shell to be lined, the general shape of the 'acket being conical, in which the metal fly ars, or blades; and the spacing bars are adapted to be assembled in the relation the same are to sustain one to another in the shell, 2Q thus forming a complete lining unit which is adapted to fit free in the shell, fixed relation of the lining with the shell being then effected by expanding the lining unit. In the accompanying drawings: 26 Figs. 1, 2 and 3 are sectional views of my improved shelllini ngs, illustrating the relative sizes of several units which are commonly used to a shell; v
Fig. 2-is a detail cross-sectional view of a a0 lining unit as introduced in the shell;
Fig. 3is a detail cross-sectional view of alining unit as expanded in the shell;
Fi and 5 are detailviews illustrating suita le joints iorthenmeta'l'lining jackets;
a5 Fig. 6 is a detail view of a wood'spacing ar; g
Fig. 7 is a detail view of a blade;
' Fig. 8 is a detail view of the lining expanding bar. Y
My invention is here shown in a form applicable to the common type of Jordan engines, a showing of the complete apparatus being unnecessary to an understanding of the invention.
The metal jacket 1 of each lining unit, as illustrated in Figs. 1,- 2 and 3, is formed of suitable gauge metal, the shape being conical to conform to'the interior shape-of theshell,
the she e of the jacket as formed being maintained by an 'expandible 'oint, as sh'own at 2-in Fi .4 or 3i n Fig. 5,t
pose o the expandible joint being presently .described.
The blades 4 and spacing bars 5 are then e nature and'purassembled in the metal jacket and are held in place in the jacket by a longitudinally tapered or wedge-shaped expansion bar 6 which is driven between 'two opposite spacing bars 5, as shown -;in Figs. 2 and 3, tocomplete the annular shape of the linin and to expand the same in'the jacket to hold the parts in-fixed relation one with another with sufficient firmnessto maintain the unit intact for shipping .and handling incident to installing the lining in the Jordan.
Installing of the linings is a very simple matter,-the units being introduced endwise in the Jordan shell 7, and the expanding bar 6 driven home to force spreading of the joint 2 or, 3, thus resulting in further expansion of the lining to assume fixed relation with the shell by the outward pressure of the parts thereon, the relation of the parts being shown in Fig. 3..
The jacket joint 2, shown in Fig. 4, illustrates a suitable brazed joint which will yield under expansion pressure exerted on the jacket by the wedging action. vThe joint 3, shown in Fig. 5, illustrates a common form of spot weldin suitable to the practice of the invention, t e joint being adapted to yield and spread under the expanding action of assembling the lining in the Jordan.
Any suitable means, as conical-shaped cores, adapted to be arranged inside the conical jackets with suitable space between the core and 'acket, may be employed to facilitate assem ling of the blades and spacing bars in'the jackets, the use of such means being illustrated in one form in Fig. 2, the core being illustrated as part 8.
Having described my invention, I claim 1 A shell lining for a Jordan engine including in combination, an fexpandible jacket shaped to conform to an inner section of the shell and having a yieldable joint adapted normally to prevent expansion of said jacket, a plurality of blades and blade spacing elements adapted to be assembled and expanded in said jacket in its normal relation to effeet a shel lining unit, and means operable after said unit is introduced in a shell to spread the joint and expand the lining unit to efiect fixed relation between the .unit and said shell. I
2. A shell linin for a J ord'an engine comprising an expan 'ble holding means shaped to conform with an inner section of the s ell and having a rupturable joint adapted normally to prevent expansion of said holding means, a plurality of blades and blade spacing elements held in said holding means inits normal relation, the rupturable joint in said holding means being adapted to be broken so that the joint may be' spread upon expansion of the assembled blades and blade spacing elements after the lining has been introduced in a shell, to effect fixed relation between the lining and the shell.
3. A shell lining for a Jordan engine c0m prising an expandible jacket of thin sheet material shaped to conform to an inner sec tion of the shell and having a rupturable joint adapted normally to prevent expansion of said jacket, a plurality of blades and blade .spacing elements wedged tightly in place in the shell and having a welded joint connection capable of being ruptured but adapted normally to prevent expansion of the jacket, a plurality of blades and blade spacing elements assembled and expanded in said acket in its normal relation to effect a shell lining unit, and a wedge operable after the unit is introduced into a shell to rupture the welded connection and expand the lining unit to effgctlfixed relation between the unit and the s el v 5. For use in the shell of a Jordan engine,
a series of blades and blade spacing elements arranged inalternate relation into apre formed shell lining adapted to be inserted, expanded and maintained within the Jordan shell, andmeans for holding said blades and blade spacing elements is preformedrelationship as a complete filler unit comprising a part periphery'enclosing said blades and blade spacing elements and extending completely around the same and having a rupturable joint adapted to be broken upon expansion of the blades and blade spacing elements after the lining is in place Within the shell.
In testimon whereof I a-flix m signature.
