RAILWAY TRUCK.
Application filed August 12, 1927. Serial No. 212,591.
My invention relates to railway trucks relative to the truck frame. By pivotally o for locomotives or cars, and has for its obsupporting the guide member 16 in the jourj ect the provision of an improved truck in nal box in this manner I am enabled to prowliich the frame of the truck is spring supvide a large bearing surface in the groove 5 ported on the axles and free to tilt lateral y 16v1 which conforms closely to the pedestals relative thereto without subjecting the frame of the side frames 14, and at the same to torsional stresses or reducing the hub time obtain the necessary flexibility between thrust wearing surfaces against the pedestal the journal box and the pedestal to permit shoe. swaying' of the frame on the axle or tilting lo My invention will be more fully set forth ofthe axle .relative to the frame without in the following description referring to the twisting the side frame 14 and without sub- 6o accompanying; drawing and the features. of jecting the surfaces of the guide member to novelty which characterize my invention excessive wear. I have shown the truck will be pointed out with particularity in the frame supported on the journal boxes 13 l5 claim annexed to and forming a part of by means of equalizers 17 which are yieldthis specification. ably supported on the journal box by springs 65 In the d rawing Fig. 1 is a transverse sec- 18 and which are spring supported on the tion of a truck embodying my invention `side frames 14 between `the truck axles theretaken approximately on the line 1-1 of Fig. of, the details of the supporting connections 2; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of between the equalizers and the frame not the truck; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view being shown as they form no part of my 70 on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. invention.
Referring to the drawing, the truck in It is apparent that in this construction if connection with which I have illustrated my swaying of the truck frame or unevenness invention comprises wheels 10 and wheel in the track should cause the wheel axles 11 axles 11 provided with journals 12 on whichv to tilt transversely relative to the frame that 75 are arranged journal boxes 13 for supportthe wearing surfaces between the guide meming the truck frame. This truck frame may ber 16 and the journal box or the pedestal be of any convenient form but in the presare not reduced and that the side frames '14 :so ent instance comprises side frames 14: havwill not be subjected to any torsional stresses ing pedestal yokes 15 extending about the because the members 16 which guide the so journal boxes 13. In accordance with my journal boxes relative to the pedestal yo'kes invention the side frames 14 are guided rela- 15 are pivotally supported in the cylindrical tive to the journal boxes by cylindrical recesses in the journal boxes.
and turn freely in the cylindrical recesses What I claim as new and desire to secure in the journal boxes so that the wheel axles by Letters Patent of the United States, is: 11 are guided in their vertical movement A locomotive or car truck comprising relative to the pedestals without restricting wheels and wheel axles, boxes for receiving the tilting of the wheel axles transversely the journals of said wheel axles, side frames' having pedestal yokes extending about said boxes, means including springs for supporting said side frames on said boxes, said boxes having cylindrical recesses therein, cylindrical guide members extending into the recesses in said boxes and having a grooved portion projecting therebeyond, said pedestal yokes being arranged to slidably engage the grooves in said guide members so as to permit tilting of said frame trans- 10 versely relative to said axles.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of August, 1927.
