MAILBOX SUPPORT.
Application filed J'une 27, 1927. Serial No. 201,782.
p This invention relates to improvements in mail box supports, and more especially to such a support particularly designed for a rural free delivery mail box.
Such a mail box usually located at the side of a. road where it must beaccessible from two sides. The user usually approaches such a mail box and has access to the same from oil the roadway, whereas the mail carrier must reach* the same from the highway.
One of lthe features of my invention is to mal e a rotatable support for the mail box f so that it may be rotated to permit access to it from either side. By thus making it rotatable, access to it is easily afforded without stepping` into the roadway. This is of particular advantage in cases where children are sent to get the mail7 and the rotatable feature permits them Ito take mail from the box without stepping` into the roadway where they would be endangered by passing;
tratlic.
Another feature of my invention is the provision of strong, rugged and durable means for supporting a mail box on the top of the ordinaryor standard metal post which isusually T in cross section..
. By the use of my invention, also, means are provided for quickly attaching and detaching a box from a post if desired.
Other features and advantages of my in vention will appear more fully as vproceed with my specitication.
ln that form of device embodying the features of my invention shown in Ithe accompanying` drawings, Fig. l is a view in pen spective, Fig. 2 is a view taken as indicated by the line 2 of Fig'. l, Fig. 3 is a view taken as indicated by the line 3 of Fig. 2, and 4 is a view tal en as indicated by the line l of Fig. 3.
Ars shown in the drawings, l() indicates an ordinary metal post being i shaped in cross section, 1l indicates a cap member for the end of lthe post provided with slots ila to accommodate the ianges or ribs of the post 10; The cap member ll is preferably substantially triangular in cross section as.`
ysupport the mail box thereupon.
`a. cap inemb er shown. The cap member ll is adapted to be att-ached to the end of the post l0 by means of the set screw l2.
The upper end of the cap member il is provided with a cylindrical hole or socket ll as shown.
l2) indicates, in general, a mail box supporting` spider consisting,` of a hub 13 with `radially projecting arms 13b `the ends of which are adapted for attachment to the lower edge or apron lli of a mail box 14tby means of the bolts l5.
The hub l?)d of the mail box supporting; spider' is provided with a downwardly projecting cylindrical stud or pivot pin 13c adapted to rest in the socket ll" to rotatably The lower end of the pivot 13 vis provided with an annular groovek 13d into which projects the end of a set screwlG to prevent removal of the pivot-13c from the socket. i
lVhile I have shown and 'described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modiiicatiens. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intentionk to claim all' novelty in my invention as broadly as possible in view of the prier art.
lVhat l claim is new, and desire to secure ,by Letters Patent, is:
ln combination with a standard metal post substantially rT-shaped in cross section; substantially triangular in shape in cross section and adapted to lit over the end of said post and provided with slots to receive the flanges of said post, the upper surface 'of said cap member being provided with a socket therein adapted to receive the pivot .shaft of a mail box support; and a set screw threaded into one flat face of said cap member and adapted to engage the center of one of the webs of the post. i
lnk witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, this 22nd day of June, 192,7.
JAMES DUNCAN.
