Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
JOHN L. BROWN, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
SHINGLE-MACI-IINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,964, dated April 7, 1857.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN L. BROWN, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Machine for Making Shingles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective View showing the general arrangement of the machine; Fig. 2 a perspective view of detached parts.
In Fig. 1,Ais a pulley to which the power is applied giving motion to the shaft B upon which is the eccentric C which revolves in the yoke D which is made fast to the knife sash E upon which is the knife F. G is an adjustable bar H and H are springs designed to hold the bar G, in place I and I are rods which may be attached to the bar G at J J J and J and slide through the frame at K K and K L is a wheel upon the shaft B which gears into the wheel M which is double its size, and around the center of which the eccentric N revolves working in the sliding yoke lever O whose fulcrum is at P where it is attached to the knife sash E. Upon the lever O is the bolt Q which slides through the knife sash E and is attached to the table R which oscillates upon the point S.
The folowing is a description of the operation of the machine. The block to be cut is placed between the rods I and I. The power being applied to the pulley A, the shaft B is revolved giving a reciprocating motion to the knife sash E and one half of a revolution to the wheels M the eccentric N alternately raises and lowers the ends of the lever O sliding the bolt Q; through the knife sash E changing the oscillating ltable R at the time that the knife F is being drawn back after cutting the shingle.
That I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ish The construction of a self-feeding shingle machine, by the arrangelnent and combination of the wheel L upon the shaft B, the wheel M the eccentric N the lever O the bolt Q and the oscillating table R when arranged and opera-ted as set forth.
JOHN L. BROWN.
