'Referring to the drawings, the machine comprises a circular standard or frame 1 having legs 2 which may be suitably secured as at 8 to a table, wall or counter, said frame having a hub portion 4 and radiating legs or braces 5. The hub 4 is provided with a hollow horizontally projecting stud shaft 6 adapted to support externally a corresponding central hollowv spindle or shaft 7 of a rotatable drum 8. The drum 8 is composed of a rear wall 9 centrally apertured to receive the stud shaft 6, a front wall 10 and a plurality of radially disposed, preferably uniform pockets or compartments 11, the walls of the latter being secured in any desired manner to the circular walls of the drum. As illustrated the walls of the radial compartments are shown as provided with integral lugs 12 adapted to be inserted in suitable slits in the circular walls of the drum 8 and thereafter clinched against said walls.
The drum element 8 further includes a gear wheel 13 rigidly secured by screws or bolts 14 to a triangular casting 15, the latter being secured by said screws or bolts to said drum and constituting a support for the central hollow stud shaft 7 adapted to rotatably and externally engage the shaft 6 of the frame or standard 1; The triangular frame member 15 is further provided with a radially eX tending arm16 having a locking projection 17 thereon for the purpose of locking the drum when emptied in a mannerwhich will be hereinafter described.
The drum 8 is rotatably supported on the standard 1 by means of the cooperating hollow shafts 6 and 7, and the drum is mainin thedrum, said'part 18 thus enclosing the drum more or less completely. A plurality of lugs 21 of any desired number are suitably secured on the circumferential orannular part of the casing'lS which lugs are designed to cooperate with and engage behind corresponding lugs or wedges 22 on the circular standard or-frame 1. The casing 18 is assembled by moving the lugs or ears 21 and 22 into transverse alignment and then engaging the same by aslight rotary movement of the casing to theright to frictionally engage the lugs. The latter may be perforated as indicated for the reception of one or more 'padlocks 23 by means of which the machine is locked in its assembled position.

The coin control mechanism ismounted on and actuated by the shaft 19 ro'ectin at its forward end P l a through a hub portion 25 and having an operating handle 27 keyed orotherwise rigidly secured tothe forward end of said shaft. The particular construction of the coin control mechanism within the housing 24 forms no part of the-present inventionand therefore will not be further described indetail. It is sutiicie-nt to state that this mechanism is operated byithe manipulation of the handle 27 and that the coin must be first inserted in the slot 25 provided for the purpose. Any improper coin of a denomination to per; it thesame to be inserted within the slot 25 fa ils to pass through the coin control elements and is returned to the customer through a circular recess 28 (Fig 1) communicahly connected with the coin slot 25.
The casing 18 is further provided with an integrally formed sliding door housing 29 having an aperture 30 therein which is normally obstructed by the door when the latter is in closed position. The casing 18is further provided with a plurality of window apertures 31 which may correspond insize, number andlocation with the radialcome partments 11 of the drum 8 orinay be proportionate in number thereto, so that the contents of said compartments are visible through the window apertures ofthe casing when the machineis assembled. The window apertures 31 have disposed therebetween radially extending ribs 32'preferably integrally cast with the casing 18'. The ribs are designed to haveseatedtherebetwcen a preferably having a covering of yieldable' packing to minimize the danger of breaking the glass when being assembledor during the operation of the machine. The ring section or sections 3% is or aremaintained in p ositio-n against the radially innermost edg i: of the glass sections on the innerface of casing 18 by means of a plurality ofsprnig plates 35 yieldably pressed inengagement against thering gliby means of suitable screws or otherfastening devices threaded into the projections 36,the latter being pref? erabiy integrally formed with the casing-18 (Fig. 12).
The sliding door or shutter is preferably 1 constructed of ametallie rim or frame 8? having a plurality of lugsBS adapted to maintain a glass section assembled in position within said door frame, (Fig. 3). The door frame 37 which may correspond sub stantially in dimensions to one ofthe window sections,terminates'in a depending portion 39 pivoted at lOto a main door operating lever 41, the latter suitably pivot-ally sup ported as at 42 to the inner side of the easing 18. :The depending/portion 39 of the door frame is further provided adjacent its lower end with a pinor projection 4 3 having a limited lateral movement within a slot latformed in the upper end of the main door operating lever 41. The construction described permits limited swinging movement of the door frame 37 relative to'its operating lever ll to permit a certain amount of cushioning action of thedoor during the slidin movement thereof within its housing thereby minimizing possibledamage to the door structure. This described arrangement further permits the door to be swung. radially from opento closed position and vice verse is closed and n the slot 25. By this simple arrangement the slot is maintained closed to obstruct the passage therethrough of a coin when the door is open the movement of said -lide permitting the insertion of a coinwhen the door is swung to closed position.
The opening and closing of the door, the coin control, as well as the various mechanisms for eriodically locking and releasing the rotary drum 8 at the proper intervals, is
con-trolledbythe central shaft 19 passing through and'having suitable bearings inthe coin control housing 24L, said shaftbeing roi'uatablygournalled at its inner end withinthe hollow central shaft 6 of theframe or stand ard 1. The several mechanisms described may be controlled and actuated by turning the operating lznob or handle 27,, fixed on the shaft 19 and the mechanism is such that the drum 8 may be actuated only when the door after a coin has been? inserted turned to the right to rotate the drum 8 one step to the left, and substantially simultaneously therewith the sliding door37 is opened by the continued movement of the operating handle toperniit access by the purchaser to the filled compartment which has been moved into registration with the door opening.

Each of the rollers 50 and 51 are designed to contact with the cam surface 53 on the main door operating lever 11 to move the latter and the door to open position on the rotation of the operating handle. Said rollers are also designed to contact with a corresponding cam surface 54 of a lever 55, pivotally mounted at 56 to the lever 41 and normally held by a spring 57 against a stop or lug 58 on the lever 41 to maintain the end of the locking lever in engagement with a projection 59 preferably integrally cast with or formed on the casing 18, thereby normally preventing the door 37 from being opened. The main door operating lever d1 has pivoted thereon as at 60 a rocking lever 61 having an upper projection thereon, which projection when the door is closed and partially open is normally held by gravity and by the tension of a coil spring 63, pivoted to the opposite end 64: of said lever, in engagement with an inwardly projecting stationary shelf or bar 65 suitably secured at 65 and 72 to the casing 18. The bar 65 is further pro vided on one edge thereof with a cut-away portion or recess 66 and an upstanding projection 67 for a. purpose to be described. The projection 62 of the lever 61 is adapted to engage the cut-away portion 66 when the door is being 'opened thereby permitting said lever to drop, assisted by the spring 63 and this movement serves to engage a second lug or pro ection 68 thereof with the peripheral teeth 69 of the gear wheel 13, rigidly secured wheel.

The projection 70 normally engages the peripheral teeth 69 of the gear lVhen the projection 68 of the lever 61 drops down to lock the drum preparatory to moving the same as above described, said projection contacts with a. second arm 7 3 of the bifurcated lever, thereby moving the latter and its projection 70 out of engagement with the gear wheel and against the tension of a coil spring 74 secured at one end to the arm '71 and secured at its other end as at 75 to a suitable projection on the casing 18.
The action ofthe spring74 is to normally maintain. arm 71 of the bifurcated lever against a suitable stop 76 on the casing and the projection 70 of said lever in looking engagement with the gear wheel 13 of the drum. A spacing block 77 may be provided between the arm 71 of the bifuroatedlever and the casing 18 to insure the desired rocking movement of the lever into and out of locking engagement with the gear wheel teeth.
After the projection 68 has dropped into engagement with the gear teeth and projection 70 has by the same described movement become disengaged from said gear teeth, the continued rotation of the operating'handle completes the movement of opening: the door, by reason of the continued engagement of the roller 51 with the cam surface 53 of the pivoted main door lever 41 and this described movement results in the drum 8 being ro tooth yieldingly maintained in engagement with the peripheralteeth of the gear wheel- 13 by means of the coil spring 57, to permit rotation of the drum in one direction only,',or in a clockwise direction as viewed inFig. 3. The pawl 79 is limited in its normal tendency to be drawn toward the teeth of the gear wheel 13 by means of its tail 80 contacting with one of the projections 36 on the inner face of the casing 18. A fixed stop is thereby provided for the spring 57 for its cooperation with the door locking lever 55.
The door is closed as described by reverse rotation of the operating handle which for each successive closing movement, engages succeeding ends ofthe rod 52 with a projection 81 of a suitably weighted lever 82 piw oted at 83 to the casing 18.- The continued reverse movement of the operating handle raises the lever 82 overcoming its weighted portion andbringing a second projection 84' thereof into engagement withthe lower edge of a lever 85 pivoted at 86 to the casing and having an upturned portion 87 disposed in the path of the pro ection 68' of the rocking lever 61 when the door is in open position.
The door 3? is normally locked-in open posi-' tion by the engagement of the shouldered end 88 of a locking lever 89 with a suitable projection 90 on the main lever 41. The lever 09. is also pivotally secured to the casing by means of the pivot 86 and is further provided with an upstanding tail portion 91 to which is secured one end of the spring 63. Thelatter therefore becomes in effect a floating spring. The locking lever 89 is further provided with a cut-away portion or recess 92 disposed in the path of the'projection 84 of the weighted lever 82 so that the locking lethe projection 68 and lever 61 above the bar 65 preparatory to being returned spring 6. 5 intoits normal position with projection68 resting on said bar when the door is in closed position. It will be apparent that the door is closed by the tension of spring 63 after locking lever 89 has been lifted from engagement with projection 90 on main door operating lever 41. V
In the operation of the vending machine and assuming the sliding door37 to be in closed position, a coin is inserted in the slot of the coin control housing 24; and the operating knob or handle 27 is turned to the right or in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 1. The operating handle is keyed to the central shaft 19 and this rotary movement thereof to the left or in av counter clockwise direction as viewed inFig. 3.

The spring 63 exerts tension on the arm 91 which is preferably an integral upstandingportion of the pivoted lever 89. l
At substantially the time when the door has been moved completely open against the tension of the spring63 and looked as described in open position, the roller 51 clears jection 68 of the/lever 65 is still in engagement with the teeth of the gear wheel 13 of thedrum and the latter can therefore be rotated a succeeding step only after the door has been closed. The engagement of the notch 99 of the lever with the projection 59 looks the sliding door against further "movement in the direction of the rotary drum 8 while the door is open, and therefore it is only possible to remove the contents of the compartment which has been presented in registry with the door aperture during the operation of moving said door to open position.
In order to further insure the rotation of the drum carrier'in one direction only (in. a clockwise direction as viewed'in Fig. 1), the pawl 78; pivoted at 50 to the casing, is normally pressed into engagement with the peripheral teeth of the gear 13 by means of the coil spring 57 secured to said pawl. The tail 80 of the pawl is-normally engaged by said spring with the stop 36 on the casing to limit the movement of the pawl in one direction and to further insure a working engagement of the spring 57 with the pivoted lever 55. It will therefo-re be apparent that the pawl 78 permits the carrier drum to be rotated in one direction only and the engagement of its tooth with the gear 13 prevents reverse movement of the drum, which is of special utility when the machine has become partially. emptied of its contents while in use, resulting in the drum having a tendency for retrograde movement due to the weight of the articles carried thereby.
As heretofore stated in order to obtain access to the next succeeding compartment of the drum carrier it is first necessary to close thedoor 37, which action uncovers the slot 25 of the coin cont-ro l housing and places the coin reception mechanism in position to receiveanother coin. The door is'closed by the same or a. succeeding customer by reverse movement of the operating handle 27 or in in a counter-clockwise direction as viewed in opposite end of the rod 52 engages a projection 49 of the loosely mounted disk member 46. The subsequent.rotation'of the disk member in a reverse direction serves through connected spring actuated mechanism rotat- CESS- ing therewith onshaft- 10 to reset the coin control mechanism to receive a subsequent coin. At the time this reverse rotation is commenced one end of the rod 52 engages the projecting lug 81 of the rocking lever 82 pivoted at 83 to the casing. The continued rotation of the operating handle and shaft 19 in reverse direction raises the projection 8d of the rocking lever82 thereby successively raising the pivoted levers 85 and 89 respectively from their position at rest against the fixed stop 85 on the casing. The rearmost lever 89 as viewed in Fig. 3, is provided with a cut-away portion or recess adjacent the projection 8st of the lever 82, the presence of whichrecess permits the outer lever 85 to be first raised independently of lever 89 a dis tance corresponding to the depth of said re- This independent movement of lever 85 engages the upturned end 87 thereof with the'lower lug 68 of the pivoted lever 61 to move the latter upwardly against the tension offloating spring 63. This movement -permits tension spring 74 to again move locking projection 70 on arm 71 of lever pivoted at (2 into engagement with the teeth 69 of gear 13 to once more lock the drum 8 against rotation in either direction. The stop 76 serves as an auxiliary limit to inward movementof the arm 71. At tie time the drum is again locked by the projection 70 engaging the gear teeth, projection 84 of lever 82 engages the rear wall of recess 92 and thereafter pivoted levers 85 and 89 are moved upward simultaneously. The further function of lever 85 is to lift rocking lever 61 until projection 62 thereof passes through the cutaway portion 66 of stationary bar and is lifted above and clear of a downturned projection 66- (Figs. 8, 7 and 8) on said bar 65, and said projection 62 is therefore in position to be moved to. the left as viewed in Fig. 3 to again support lever, 61 in raised position by the engagement of projection 62 thereof with the bar 65. This desired and described re-eugagement ofprojection 62 with bar 65 is ofyfected'by the door being closed imi'nediately by. spring 63 upon the described lifting of lever61. This movement f the door to closed position permitted by lever bcing lifted by projection 84- on lever after said projection has reached the inner wall of the recess 92 on said lever. The upward movement of lever 89' releases the notched or cut-away portion 88, thereof from engagement with projection 90 on the main door operating lever 41, thereby permitting the latter and thedoor carried thcreby to be rapidly moved to the right (Fig. 7) to closed position by'the tension of coil spring 63. All of the elements of the mechanism are now in position to permit the door to be again opened and rotary drum 8 rotated another step, upon the insertion of a coin and through the rotation of the operating handle 27 to.
the right as viewed in Fig. 1 and to the left as viewed in Fig. 7, upon which occasion the various elements cooperate and perform their respective functions as has been hereinabove described.

- cut-away portion 66, and the consequent failure of the lever 61 to drop down might capse the lower projection 68 of the'lever 61 to skip or fail to engage the proper tooth of the gear wheel 13, thereby'resulting in the failure of projection 68 to serve its further function of releasing gear wheel 18 through its engagement with arm 73 of lever 71 with probable jamming of the mechanism.
When all of the radial compartments 11 of the drum 8 have been emptied of their contents, the machine is designed to become automatically locked with the door in open position. lVhen the door is in open position the coin slot is obstructed by-the sliding shutter 45 controlled by the pin 45 on the lever d1, the position of said slide to obstruct or on pose the coin slot depending on the position of said lever. The drum filled with merchandise has been inserted in the casing in a predetermined position so that a definite compartment is first relieved of its contents, and the other compartments are subsequently emptied progressively and in succession. When the drum has been rotated to present the last compartment containing merchandise to bevended into registry with the door aperture, the locking projection 17 on the radially projection arm 16 mounted rigidly with the gear wheel 13 and drum, comes in contact with a corresponding projection 93 rigidly secured to the pivoted lever This engagement prevents the usual reverse movement of theoperating handle to lift levers 85 and 89 as'heretofore described'in order to, close the. door. Said lever 85 cannot be rocked upwardly by lever 82 because, of the contact of stop 98 thereof with projection 1'? carried by the drum. The drum cannot be rotated in the opposite direction, or forward", to release engagement of projections 17 and 93 by reason of the described engagement of locking projection 68 of lever 61 with the peripheral teeth of the gearwheel 13.
In this position of the machine, and as a further notice to the public 'that all of the contents have been sold, the last remaining filled receptacle is preferably providedwith a flap 94: (Fig. 4) preferably suitably hinged to the drum periphery and which is normally maintained pressed inwardly in unexposed position by the contact against it of the merchandise to be vended. When this merchandise is removed the hinged flap 94 drops down by gravity to the position shown in Fig. ltO display the word Empty or the like through the door aperture 30 to indicate 'to subsequent purchasers that the contents of the machine have been sold out.
'It is now necessary to restock the machine; which operation is effectedbyunlocking the padlock 23 and removing the casing from the drum thereby exposing all of the radial compartments to view. After the compartments have been filled with the merchandise to be sold the casing 18 is replaced but with the last compartment to be again emptied immediately to the right of the door opening as viewed in Figs. land 4, which act of positioning places the cooperating lugs or projections 17 and 93 in reverse position to permit a complete rotation of 860 degrees of the drum before said projectionsagain'come into locking engagement (Fig. l); It will be apparent that the replenishment of the drum with merchandise serves'too'nce more swing back to unexposed position the flap 9% bearing theword Empty or the like.
In order to insure the proper positioning of the cooperating lugs 17 and 93 to permita rotation of360 degrees of the drum, the easing 18 may be positioned over the filled drum with the aid of any suitable pointed implement which is inserted through an aperture 95 in the circular frame 1 (Fig. 2), and through a corresponding aperture 96 in the drum 8 which has been positioned upon the central spindle 6 carried by the frame 1. The

notch 97' are aligned as described, the peripheral cars 21 on drum 18 occupy their proper position to the left or and in a plane within the circumferential plane occupied by the cooperating ears 22 on the frame 1. The positioning pin or implement is removed and a slight rotary movement of the casing to the right serves to securely engage the peripheral cooperating lugs 21 and 22 as illustrated in. Figs. 1 and 2, and the padlock 23 is attached through one pair of the cooperating lugs to securely lock the machine in assembled relation.
Thepre'sent application is designed to cover more particularly the improved and simplified mechanism for actuating a normally closed and locked vending machine of the til non-selective drum type, after the coin controlled mechanism is released by the insertion of the proper coin. Any desired and suitable form of coin controlled mechanism may be used in conjunction with the present improvements to permit the main operating shaft to be rotated by its operating handle.
For example, a coin control may be utilized such as is fully described in my co-pending aplication Serial No. 413%,? 70, filed iiipri l 27, 1921 for coin controlled device. An examination of the coin controlled mechanism described in my said co-pending application will aid in a complete understanding of the present machine and said other application is hereby made a part hereof so far as it is necessary to the understanding and operation of the invention herein claimed.
What I claim is l. A vending machine comprising in combination: a frame, a drum having radially disposed compartments rotatably supported thereby, a casing, having a door aperture and a sliding door normally closing the same, adapted tobe positioned on said frame to house said drum, means carried by said casing for progressively rotating said drum and actuating said door to successively align the radial compartments of said drum with said door aperture, cooperating means carried by said casing and said drum to prevent the continued movement of the latter after a contr plete revolution, said cooperating means further preventing the door from being closed after the complete revolution of said drum, and meanscarried by said drum automatically operative after said complete revolution to visually indicate that said drum is locked against rotation.
2. In a coin controlled vending machine the combination of: a frame, a drum having a plurality of radial compartments open at their sides adapted to be rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis on said frame, a casing adapted to be secured to said frame to house said drum and having an operating shaft journalled therein, means carried by said casing and controlled by said shaft for rotatin said drum, means carried by said casing for normally locking said drum against rotation, said drum rotating means being opera'tire to disengage said drum locking means to permit said drum to be rotated, and auxiliary means controlled by saic drum rotating means for locking said drum against rotation after drum lockin means have been disengaged.

A coin controlled vending machine comprising in. combination: a frame, a drum having radially disposed compartments adapted to be rotatably mounted on said frame, a casing, having coin controlled mechanism and a door aperture, adapted to be secured to said frame to house said drum, said door aperture being adapted to register with the radial compartments of said drum when said casing is assemblethmeans carried by said casing normally locking said drum against rotation, a shaft having an operating handle ournalled in said casing, a door operating lever having a sliding door pivotally mounted on said casing, said door normally closing said door aperture, means mounted on said casing normally n'iaintaining said door in closed position, means carried by said door operating lever and cooperating with said casing to normally prevent said lever and said door from being moved to open position, means carried by said shaft adapted to disengage said door locking means and engage said door operating lever to move the door to open position, means pivotally mounted on said casing cooperating with said lever to maintain the door in open position, means carried by said door operating lever for temporarily disengaging said drum locking means when said door is moved to open position, said lever carried means further operating to engage said'drum and rotate the same after said drum locking means have been disengaged, said lever carried means being further operative to lock said drum against rotation after the drum has been rotated by the movement of said operating lever and said door to open position, and means carried by said casing and cooperating with said drum to maintain the latter against retrograde movementwhen said drum is being rotated by said lever carried means.

A coin controlled vending machine co iprising in combination :a frame, a drum having radially disposed compartments adapted to be rotatably mounted on said frame, a casing having coin controlled mechanism and a door aperture adapted to be secured to said frame to house said drum, said door aperture being adapted to register with the radial compartments of said drum when said casing is assembled, means carried by said casing normally locking said drum against rotation, a shaft having an operating handle journalled in said casing, a door operating lever having a sliding door pivotally mounted on said casing, said door normally closing said door aperture, means mounted on said casing normally maintaining said door in closed position, means carried by said door operating lever and cooperating with said casing to normally prevent said lever and said door from being moved to open position, means carried by said shaft adapted to disengage said door locking means and engage said door operating lever to move the door to open position,
means pivotally mounted on said casing cooperating with said lever to maintain the door in open position, means carried by said door operating lever for temporarily disengaging said drum locking means when said door is moved to open position, said lever carried means further operating to engage said drum and rotate the same after said drum locking means have been disengaged, said lever carried means being further operative to lock said drum against rotation after the drum has been rotated by the movement of said operating lever and said door to open position, means carried by said casing and cooperating with said drum to maintain the latter against retrograde movement when said drum is being rotated by said lever carried means, said door operating lever engaging means carried by said shaft being adapted to disengage said pivotally mounted door holding means to permit said door to be moved to closed position, and means pivotally mounted on said casing adapted to be engaged by said door lever operating means on said shaft to engage said lever carried means to permit said drum locking means to reengage said drum and lock the same against rotation when said door is moved to closed position. In a coin controlled vending machine the combination of a frame, a drum having a plurality of radial compartments open at their sides, adapted to be rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis on said frame, a casing adapted to be secured to said frame to cover the open sides of said compartments, said casing having an operating shaft ournaled therein, means carried by said casing and controlled by said shaft for rotating said drum, and means carried by said casing for normally locking said drum against rotation, said drum rotating means being operative to disengage said drum locking means to permit said drum to be rotated.

In a coin controlled vending machine the combination of a rotary drum, a casing adapted to house said drum, a door mounted on said casing, an operating shaft journalled in said casing, and means mounted on said casing and actuated by said shaft for rotating said drum and opening and closing said door in timed relation to the rotation of said drum.

A vending machine comprising a rotatable drum having radial compartments open at their sides, a casing adapted to house said drum and having a door aperture registering with said radial compartments, a door carried by said casing and normally closing said aperture, a shaft having an operating handle journaled in said casing, means carried by said casing and controlled by said shaft for opening and closing said door, and means carried by said casing and controlled by said door actuating means for progressively rotating said drum in timed relation to the opening and closing of said door.

In a coin controlled vending machine the combination of a rotatable drum having radially disposed compartments open at their sides, a casing having a door aperture adapted to house said drum and close the open sides of said compartments, said door aperture being ing, said door normally closing said door aperture, means carried by said door operating lever and cooperating with said casing to normally prevent said lever and said door from being moved to open position, means carried by said shaft adapted to disengage said door locking means and engage said door operating lever to move the door to open position, means pivotally mounted on said casing cooperating with said lever to maintain the door in open position, and means carried by said door operating lever for temporarily disengaging said drum locking means when said door is moved to open position, said lever carried means further operating to engage said drum and rotate the same after said drum locking means have been disengaged, said lever carried means being further operative to lock said drum against rotation after the drum has been rotated by the movement of said operating lever and said door to open position. In a coin controlled vending machine the combination of: a frame, a drum having radially disposed compartments adapted to be rotatably-mountedon a horizontal axis on said frame, a casing having a door aperture adapted to be secured to said frame to house said drum, said door aperturebeing adapt-ed to register with one of said radial compart ments of said drum when said casing is assembled, means carried by said casing normally locking said drum against rotation, a shaft having an operating handle jour-. naled in said casing, a door operating lever having a sliding door pivotally mounted on said casing, said doornormally closing said door aperture, means mounted on said casing normally maintaining said door in closed position, means carried by said door operating lev r and cooperating with said casing to normally prevent said lever and said door from being moved to open position, means carried by said shaft adapted to disengage said door locking means and engage said door operating lever to move the door to open position, means'pivotally, mounted on said casing cooperating with said lever to maintain the door in open position, means carried by said door operating lever for temporarily disengaging said drum locking means when said door is moved to open po-' sition, said lever carried means further operating to engage said drum and rotate the same aftersaid drum locking means have been disengaged, said lever carried means being still further operative to loclr said drum against rotation after the drum has been rotated by the movement of said operating lever and said door to open position, said door operating lever engaging means carried by said shaft being adapted to disengage said pivotally mounted door holding means to permit said door to be moved to closed position, and means pivotally mounted on said casing adapted to be engaged by said door lever operating means on said shaft to engage said lever carried means to permit said drum locking means to reengage said drum and lock the same against rotation when said door is in closed position.

In a coin-controlled vending machine, the combination of a rotary drum having compartments arranged in a series around its center and open at their front ends, a fixed casing wall covering said front ends of the compartments and having a door aperture, a door mounted on and movable parallel with said wall, means for turning the drum to bring a compartment in delivery position behind said door, said means including a power shaft extending through said wall and means whereby said shaft can turn the drum, means actuated by said shaft for moving the door to open position, means for holding the drum from turning, and means actuated by said shaft for releasing the drum for a limited time prior to the complete opening of the door.
11. In a coin-controlled vending machine, the combination of a rotary drum having compartments arranged in a series around its center and open at their front ends, a fixed casing wall covering said front ends of the compartments and having a door aperture, a door and lever pivotally mounted on and movable parallel with said wall, means for turning the drum to bring a compartment in delivery position behind said door, said means including a power shaft extending through said wall and means whereby said shaft can turn the drum, means actuated by said shaft for swinging the door to open position, means for holding the drum from turning, and means actuated by said shaft for releasing the drum for a limited time prior to the complete opening of the door.

In a coin-controlled vending machine, the combination of a rotary drum having compartments arranged in a series around its center and open at their front ends and having a central space at the inner ends of said compartments and a gear wheel fixed to said drum, a xed casing wall covering said front ends of the compartments and having a door aperture, a door mounted on and movable parallel with said wall, means for turning the drum to bring a compartment in de livery position behind said door, said means including a power shaft extending through said wall and means engageable with said gear wheel whereby said shaft can turn the drum, means actuated by said shaft for mov-' ing the door to open position, means for hold ing the drum from turning, said power shaft and means operated thereby being mounted on the casing wall and arranged in said central space.
13. A vending machine comprising a rotatable drum arranged in substantially vertical planes and with a substantially horizontal axis and having radial compartments open at their front sides, a casing adapted to house said drum and having a door aperture registering with said radial compartments, a door carried by said casing and normally closing said aperture, a shaft having an operating handle journaled in said casing, means carried by said casing and controlled by said shaft for opening and closing said door, and means carried by said casing and controlled by said door actuating means for progressively rotating said drum in timed relation to the opening and closing ofsaid door.
