This invention relates to a news sta-nd with an adjustable top.
The main object of the invention is to rovide a durable and efficient news stand w ich is economical in construction and convenient in operation, having a forwardly and downwardly sloping upper portion and covering means or roof means therefor which is swingably and adjustably mountedl thereon to be held in various selected positions. Another object is to provide the covering means with means for mounting the same so that it can be swung and held in various raised or open positions, and in the closed position, and may also be swung behind the stand out of the way. A further object is to provide the covering means with extension means which is adjustable or interchangeable thereon and is useful in either the closed or in the open position of the coveringmeans. A still further object is to provide side shield means for closing the opening between the sloping side wall andv the covering means, and to con-V struct it so that it may readily be swung down out of the way, and is also symmetrical so that it may be interchanged and used at either side of the stand.
Those and other object-s and advantages are attained with this invention, as will become apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. l is a side elevation `of a stand embodying my invention, and showing the clovering means or top in the normal open position and the side shield means swung down outV of the way, also indicating in dot-and-dash lines how said top may be swung behind the stand;
Fig. 2 is also a side elevation of the stand, showing the side shield means in the raised or o `erative position and the extension means on t e top extended forward, also indicating in dot-and-dash lines the swingability of the shield means;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view ofthe stand, with the parts arranged as shownin Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a front elevational view, taken along line 5-5 of Fig. ,1;`
Fig. 6 is a partial side view, showing the the rear` thereof;`
Fig. 7 is a viewl similar to Fig.` 6, but showing in full lines and in dotand-dash lines that the top may be swung and heldin various positions, from its closed front position to its inoperative or hidden position behindthe stand; f v
Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail section on line 8-8 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 9 is a top view thereof, with a part broken away, 'to show `the pin and slot con-` nection between the rear wall and the top.
'lhc invention is illustratedin its preferred form of construction in the drawings, and` comprises the stand including the rear wall 11 and the side walls 12 .extending therefrom to the front wall 13 and having ltheir upper ends sloping downwardly from the rear wall to the front wall. The walls are preferably made of sheetrmetal and angle irons used on the corners, as indicated in the drawings.
An upper shelf 14 and a lower shelf l5 may` i also be provided therein, forming a lower closed compartment between shelf 15 and the bottom wall 17, with a door 18 thereon, and anupper compartment which is open toward the top. .f
This stand I provide with my improved top or covering means 20,which is swingably and adj ust-ably mounted thereon, preferably by the use "of a pair of links 2l each of which is j pivotally attached with a bolt or element 22 andwing nut 23 to the top 20ai1d with a similar bolt 22 and wing nut 23 to anintermediate part of the upper sloping end of side wall 12.v These Vwing nuts on these bolts may be readily loosened and tightened, and the links and thereby the top or covering means can be conveniently adjusted to theselected position and lirmly held in such position. The top in its closed position'furthermore rests on the sloping upperends' of the side walls, and in its open or covering positions restson the top angle iron 24 on the rear wall 1'1. A pin 25 is preferably also placed on said angle iron 24 to engage in a slot 26 provided in the rear bar 20 of the tcp 20, and the metal of the top being bulged up at 27 to provide room for the head of said pin 25, as best shown in Figs. 3, 8 and 9, therebymore firmly and positively holding the top in'its raised covering position while the stand is in use, as indicated in Fi g. 1.
The top or covering means ispreferably also providedvwith extension means 28, which is interchangeably mountable reither at the rear or at the front ofsaid top means 20, as by the use of fingers or straps 29 on said eX- tension means, which engage either in rear loops 30 or in front loops 810m said top means, for mounting this extension means either on the rear of the top means to close the stand, as shown in Fie. 6, or for mounting it on the front thereof, as shown in Fig'. l, or to extend it forward of said `front to provide additional or extended covering means, as shown in Fig. 2. This top and extension means is preferably also constructed of sheet metal and angle irons, in the manner indicated in the drawings.
Side shield means is also provided, and is preferably swingable and interchangeable, so as to be used in the raised operative or in the lowered inoperative position and at either side of the stand. This means comprises a sheet or plate of metal 32 which is removably andswingably mounted with a screw or bolt 33 on the intermediate part. of the sloping upper end of said wall l2. This plate is made symmetrical and preferably triangular in shape, having said screw 33 placed at the middle of one side and having a pair of notches 34 and 34: provided in that side, each notch being equally distant from said screw; in order that one of the notches may receive bolt 22 when this plate is up in its operative orishielding position, as shown in Fig. 2, while the other notch receives the bolt when the shield plate is swung down out of the way, as shown in Fig. l. A notch 35 is also provided in another side of this plate, for receiving bolt 22 on top 20 when the plateis piacedin its raised or operative position, and this bolt and notch are instrumental in holding the plate in such raised position. The plate may thus be readily swung up and held in its raised position, or swung down on said screw 33 and supported thereon in its lowered position; and furthermore, since the slots 34, 3a and the various parts of the plate are arranged symmetrical, the. one plate may be used interchangeably at either side of the stand, at the Windward side, thus making one, plate do with each stand instead of two plates, whenever preferred for economy.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A stand having rear, front, and side walls, the top of the stand being open, covering means therefor, and link means for swingably mounting said covering means so as to retain itin various positionsover said top opening as a roof, or to close said opening, or to swing it out of the way behind the rear wall.
2. A stand comprising a compartment at its upper portion which is open toward the top, covering means therefor, and means includ ing links and readily operated elements for swingably mounting and for retaining said covering means in various raised positions over said upper portion as a roof over said open top, or to swing it out of the way behind the rear wall.
3. A stand comprising rear, front, and side walls, the stand being open at the top, covering means therefor, and means including' links and readily operated elements connecting said links to said covering means and said side walls for swingably mounting and for rctaining said covering means raised over said open top as a roof, or to close said top, or to drop itoutof the way.

Astand comprising an upper compartment which is open toward the top, covering means and means for swingably mounting it to either cover and close said open top orto be retained as a roof spaced thereover, and extension means included in said covering` means to serve at one end in closing saidtop opening and at the other end to serve as an extension on the raised roof.
6. A stand comprisingan upper compartment with a rear wall and being open toward the top, covering means adjustably mounted over said open top and extending forward from said rear wall but `spaced from the other walls of the compartment, andshield means which is swingably mounted on the stand to be swung up and close a space between said covering means and the stand, or to be readily swung down out of the way.
7. A stand comprising a compartment with a rear wall and side wallssloping downward therefrom toward the front and providing a top opening, covering means extending for-` ward from said rear wall and being spacedn above said side walls, and side shield means pivotally mounted on the side wall to be swung up and close the space between said covering means and the side wall, or to be readily swungdown at the side of the stand and out of the way.
8. A stand comprising an upper compartment with a rear wall and side walls sloping downward therefrom toward the front, said compartment bein open toward the top, covering means exten ing forward from the rear wall and being yspaced above the side walls, and a side shield member with means for swingably and removably mounting it at either-side of the stand, for closing either space between either side wall and said covering means or to be swung down out of the way. i
