COMBINED TENT, BED, AND CASE.
Application filed April 27, 1925. Serial No. 26,230.
My invention relates to a case to be mounted upon the running board of an automobile, or at any other suitable point thereon, for receiving a folding bed, of the type shown in my copending application for folding bed, Serial No. 668,144, filed October 12, 1923, while not necessarily restricted to this use.
An important object of the invention is to provide a case of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, strong, durable, cheap to manufacture, and will properly exclude the weather or rain.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tent or canopy for use in connection with the case and folding bed.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a case, embodying my invention, showing the same closed,
Figure 2 is a, similar view, showing the case open and the folding bed partly open,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical section taken on line 33, of Figure 4. v v H Figure 4 is a horizontal section taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 5-5 of Figure 3,
7 Figure 6 is a perspective view of the case and folding bed, opened, with a canopy or tent applied thereto, and,
Figure 7 is aside elevation of the same, parts being shown in longitudinal section.
Figure is a fragmentary bottom plan view of one corner of the top.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention the case embodies front and rear vertical legs or bars 10 and 11, preferably inthe form of angle irons. At their lower ends, these legs are disposed about the corners of a base 12, which may be formed of wood or the like. The rear legs may be further connected with the base by diagonal braces 13, as shown. The top of the case-is designated by the numeral Hand is preferably formed of sheet metal. The lon itudinal edges of the top are bent down ancf inwardly upon themselves, forming horizontal flanges 15, from which depend vertical longitudinal flanges 16. The top 145, atits ends, is bent inwardly upon itself providing horizontal flanges 17 carrying depending vertical flanges 18. The longitudinal flanges 16 and transverse flanges18 form in effect, a rectangular frame, a-ndthis frame receives in the corners thereof, the upper ends of the posts 10 and 11. These posts have their sides bolted or otherwise rigidly secured to the flanges 16 and 18, as shown, at 19. As clearly shown-in'Figure 4 the adjacent edges 20 of the flanges'15 and 17 are beveled, to securea close fit. H
The back of the case embodiesa section of flexible material 21, which may be fabric, suchas canvas or the like, oil-cloth, leather, or any other suitable material. This section. of fabric is provided at its top and bottom with hems 22, Whichare adapted to receive reinforcing strips 23, which maybe of metal or any other suitable material. The fabric is applied to the backof the frame and is extended'over the ends of the same, and the upper hemmed portion of the fabric is attached to the flanges 16 and 18, by bolts 24: or the like, passing through the strip 23, and the lower portion of the fabric is attached to the base 12 by screws 25 or the like also passing through the lower strip ,23. The forward edgesof the fab ric are provided with vertical hems 26, receiving reinforcing strips27, Figure 4 which may. be secured to thefront posts 10 by bolts 28 or the like, as shown. i
The front side of the case is open and is adapted to be covered by a flexible cover or closure element29, which may be a piece of fabric such'as canvas, oilcloth, leather, or any othersuitable material. The upper edge of this flexible cover is provided with a hem 30, Figure5, receiving a reinforcing strip 31, which may be formed of metal or other suitable material. This upper hemmedend is attached to the front longitudinal flange 16 by means of bolts 32 or the like. The ends of the hem 30 extend beyond the ends of the case and are adapted to overlap such ends. If desired,:these overlapping ends of the hem 30 may be secured to the ends 21 of the fabric 21 bystitching 34 or the same may be secured to the frame by bolts or the like. The vertical edges of the cover are preferably hemmed as shown at 33 but these hems have no reinforcing strips therein. The cover 29 is provided atits bottom with a. hem 35, Figure 5, which is stitched at its opposite ends to the lower ends of the hem 33, as shown at 36. \Vhen the cover 29 is in the lower closed position, the hem 35 is arranged beneath the bottom of the'base 12, and is dctachably secured thereto by snaps or catches 37. The vertical hems 33 are also detachably secured to the ends of the case by detachable snaps or catches 38. A closure flap 39 is provided, which may be equipped with alongitudinal hem 40 at its bottom receiving a reinforcing strip 11, secured to the front edge of the base 12 by screws or the like. The upper longitudinal edge of this strip has a hem 42 but this hem does not receive a reinforcing strip and the same may also have vertical hems 43 receiving no reinforcing strips. lVhen the flexible cover 29 is in the closed position, Figure 5, the closure flap39 is arranged vertically behind the same, as shown. The case is adapted for receiving a folding bed -14, of the type shown in my co-pending application for folding bed, Serial No. 6681M, filed October 12, 1923. This folding bed embodies generally rail sections 45, which are hinged at their inner ends. The inner rail sections 45 are hinged to transverse rails 46, rigidly mounted upon. the base 12, at its ends. The outer rails 45 carry foldable legs 4 I propose to provide the legs 47 at their upper ends with openings 48, for removably receiving an inverted U-shaped support 49, as shown.
The case is rigidly mounted upon the running board or the like of the automobile, by any suitable means.
As clearly shown in Figures 6 and 7, I provide a tent or canopy, comprising an inclined top 50, provided at its upper end with a hood or pocket 51, which is adapted to fit over the upper end of the case. The top inclines downwardly toward the support 49 and is provided at its lower end with :1 depending end curtain 52. This end curtain may be suitably detachably secured to the transverse brace 53 of the legs by snaps 5 1 or the like. One side of the canopy or tent is covered by a permanently closed side 55, which may be integral with the top 50 and sewed or otherwise secured to the vertical edge of the end curtain 52. One end of the hood or pocket 51 is stitched to the side 55, as shown at 55. The opposite side of the tent is adapted to be closed by a movable curtain 56. One end of the hood or pocket is stitched to the curtain 56, as shown at 56. One edge of this curtain is adapted to be detachably connected with the end curtain 52, by snaps 52', while its opposite vertical edge may be secured to the side of the case, by the same snaps 38, which are employed to hold the frontcover 29 closed: The opposite side has its inner vertical edge detachably secured to the opposite end ot the case, by the snaps 38, as is obvious.
In view of the foregoing description, it is thus seen that a substantially rain proof canopy, tent or cover is provided for the folding bed and case, when opened. This cover or canopy is of course readily removable and may be. conveniently folded and stored within the case.
In view of the foregoing description it is thought that no further explanation of the invention is necessary, for its complete un derstanding.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same. and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
