IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTlNG DEVICES FOR SEEDERS AND CULTIVATORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,602, dated November 2, 1875; application filed September 21, 1575.

T 0 all whom it may concern Beit known that I,WILLARD A. VAN BRUNT, of Horicon, in the county of Dodge and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Lifting Device for Broadcast Bower and Cultivator Combined; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which is shown a perspective view of my invention.

This invention has relation to an improve ment in that class of cultivators or combined seed-sowers and cultivators in which the dragbars are raised all together through the me dium of chains connecting them with an eccentric-ally-journaled shaft, which is actuated by a suitable lever.

This improvement consists in the provision of a ratchet-standard having pivoted to it, on a line corresponding with the journals of the chain-shaft, a lever, one end of which is rigidly secured to said shaft, said lever being provided with a pawl to engage with the teeth of the ratchet, all as hereinafter described, the object of said improvement being to constitute in the ratchet-standard a support for the eccentric shaft, and to simplify by such means the mechanism for adjusting and sustaining the dragbars.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, A designates part of the frame of a combined seed-sewer and. cultivator, B B being the side castings, which support the seed-box and hold the axles of the wheels upon which the implement is to be mounted. 0 represents the chain-shaft, having on its ends the crank-arms c, by means of which it is eccentrically journaled to the rear ends of the castings B B. D represents an L-shaped standard or bracket secured to the frame A, and thence projecting and being bent upward from below, the chainshaft terminates in a head, E, the edge of which forms a ratchet, e, to receive a pawl, f,

pivoted to the side of a lever, F, which,.in turn, has its pivotal support in 'the center of said head, and on a line with the journals of the crank-arms c. p

The operation of the lever in connection with the shaft 0 is obvious, and need not be detailed.

I am aware that there is no novelty in the eccentric arrangement of the chain bar. I therefore do not claim it, or mechanism for actuating it, broadly; but

What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination with the eccentrica1ly-journaled lifting-shaft O, the bracket D, extending and bent upwardly below said shaft, and terminating in a ratchet-segment, e, and the lifting-lever F,fulcrumed to said segment, rigidly attached to the shaft 0, and provided with a pawl, f, to engage with said ratchet, substantially as shown and described.
