u. JVMAGILL AREAWAY CONSTRUCTION v Filed Jan. 20, 1928 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Dec. '18; "1928.
,AREAWAY cons 'mucrron,
' Application filed January 20.19.2 31. Serial in. 245,042,. 7
' part.
This invention relatesto area way construction in connection withbuilding opera tions. 7 p
vAn object of the invention is the provision of an improved type ofareaJ-Way structure which may be economically manufactured in the form of standardized units,
adapted to be placed in position for connection to a main wall.
The walls 'of such area-way structures are.
customarily made of the same materials, in
like manner, and at the same time as themain wall of which they form an integral It thus becomes necessary to build, in the area-way excavation, twoside walls and an outer wall (involving the making of four masonry corners) to install a window sill and a window frame and sash in the opening in the main wall; and to also install in the area-way proper a drain sill, an area-way basin, anda gratingror grill for covering the top-of the area-way. 7
By the present invention, the work of making such area-way structures is much simplified, and the cost thereof is materially reduced. The invention contemplates the casting from reinforced concrete, metal, or
other suitable material, of a unit comprising a complete area-way wall, basin and, window sill, imbedded in which casting may be a window frame and grating bars or other suitable means for covering the top opening. Such a' unit is placed in the area-way excavation in proper relation to the main wall, which latter is then built around and attached to the shell of the unit, whereby the two become integral.
The invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a wall, installed in connection with which isa unit embodying one formof the invention; Figure 2 is a top plan view of the unit as it appears when installed; Figure 3 is a vertical section on the line.3-3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction indif cated by the arrows; and Figure is a-veri of-Figure 3,
tical section on the line 4 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. r
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes a vertical wall portion, which. may be of curved, rectangular or other desired tour. Integral with this verticalwall is a form and cemented tothe bottom wall. 'Alternatively, this bottom wall or basin'2 may wall 1. In the front portion of the'unit (Fig. i) is formed a window-sill 5, ad-
jacent which sill is installed a window-frame 6, adapted to receive a sash of any desired type. The window-frame 6 may be formed of metal, wood, or other suitable material.
A drainpipe 4(Fig. 2), which may be of standard slope rearwardly to a drain opening 3 (Fig. 1), formed in the rear portion of vertical;
If the shell of the unit be'made of concrete, the window-frame may be either placed in the mould in such position that the concrete will be'poured around the same, and, upon setting, retain it'in place; or there may be provided-in the casting a recess to receive the frame, which maybe, cemented in place after the casting material has set. If the shell be made of. cast metal, the lat ter procedure is to be followed.
Grating or grille members, suchas 8, in the form of bars'of steel, wood, or other suitable material, may be either placed in the concrete moulds in such position that the concrete will bepoured about the ends thereof, and, uponsetting, retain the same in place; or suitable recesses may be cast in the shell to receive such ends, which may then be secured in position in any wellknown manner.
Reinforcing members such as 11 (Fig. 4)
may be placed within the mould in which the concrete is poured. V
In order that the unit may be securely anchored to the main wall, the shell may be provided with projecting ribs, such as 9 (Fig. 1), around which the concrete of the main wall will set; or with grooves, such as 10 (Fig. 2), within which such. concrete will set.
bodiinents shown, but what I desire to cover by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In the combination of a foundation wall, having an opening therein leading to an areaway, a unitary areaway structure adapted to be set into the said opening, and form an integral part of the wall, comprising a cast shell having side walls fit-ting in said opening and formed to'receive a window frame, and a bottom wall having its forward portion projecting into the opening and forming a window sill.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a unitary areaway structure, adapted to be built into and made integral with a foundation wall comprising a cast shell having side walls, a bottom wall, a grating imbedded in the top thereof, and a window frame in one side wall, the portions of the side wall adjacent the window frame being adapted to be incorporated with and be made an integral portion of the foundation wall.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a unitary areaway structure adapted to be built into and made integral with a foundation wall comprising a cast shell, having a bottom and side walls, the side walls and forward portions of the bottom cooperating to receive a window, the said forwardportion constituting a window sill, the said window sill and forward portions of the sidewalls being adapted to be built into an opening in a foundation wall.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature to this specification.
