This invention relates to a book holder and it is an object of the invention to provide vide a device of this kind whiche'ifectively holds a book in openposition and in a manner readily permitting the required turning of the pages but which normally holds thepages A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind comprisingt'wo holding elements supported for movement one with respect to the other and in a manner to automatically compensate for the variance in the back of the bookas the-pages'are turned in order to assure theopen book being properly positioned for visual access by the reader.

The pintle 3 rearwardly of the rods 2 is provided. with the head 19 with which is rection or in a direction transverse to the members M. The outer end of this arm 20 is fixedly secured to the central part of a cross arm 21. Through each end portion of the arm 21 is freely disposed an arm 22 the inner end of which having a' cross head 23 the extremities of which being slidably disposed through the loop members 24: pro jecting from the rear of a member M. Each of themembers M above the cross head 23 is provided with a slot 25 disposed lengthwise of the groove 10 and through which is disposed a headed shank 26 in threaded engagement with theslide 11, the outer end of the shank having a head 27 for contact with the rear face of the member M upon requisite turning movement of the shank to effectively hold'theslide 11 in desired adj usted position.

In applying a book to my improved holdor, the back of the same is freely inserted between the opposed vertical edges of the members M with the covers of the book clamped between the inner portions of the shelves 5 andplates12 which is readily accomplished upon requisite adjustment of the slides 11. The plates 6 and 16 are then suitably adjusted to bring the laminations 9 and 17 in proper contact with the leaf edges of the book. The rods 2 permit the members M to be readily adjusted one with respect to the other to compensate for books of various thicknesses and as the leavesv of the book are turned the arms 22 will have requisite sliding movement through the arm 21 and the pivotal connection between the arm 20 and the head19 of the pintle 3 will permit the members M to have forward and rearward movement one with respect to the other to compensate for the variance in the book back in order to maintain the exposed pages of the open book in proper position for visual access by the reader.

My improved holder is adaptedto be supported in any desired manner and, as herein disclosed, I indicate a standard S having a forwardly directed extension 28 in universal connection, as as 29, with the central portion of the arm 21 through the medium of a ball and socket joint, a binding screw 30 tilole of some change and modification without depart-ingfrom the principlesv and spirit thereof andfor this reason. I donot wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangementand formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim 1. A book holder comprising two members provided with means for engaging the covers of a book with the back of the book positioned between the members, means for connecting the opposed portions of the members for movement one toward theother, and means for connecting said members for relative movement in a forward and backward direction. v p I 2. A book holder comprising two members having grooves in the opposedfaces thereof, cross rods having enlargements slidably engaged within said grooves, amember pivotally connecting the crossed portions of therods, an arm pivotally connected to said member for swinging movement in substan.- tially a horizontal direction, a second arm connected to the outer portion of said first named arm, arms slidably disposed through I the extremities of the second arm and pro vided with cross heads, means for slidably connecting said cross heads to the members, a supporting stand, and means for adjustably connecting the second named arm with said supporting stand.
