1 invention relates to padlocks and more particularly to a padlockprovided with an improved type of" shackle mechanism whmh co-operates withtlie-locking mechanism within thelock case and with the parts which are adapted to be'secured by the lock. a
. In some situationsit. is difilcult to employ a padlock provided with the ordinary shackle which is usually Ushapedfin form, 1 the end of one of the legs of-the;U being permanently but movably secured" within the loclgand the other end co-operating] with: the locking mechanism to secure the shackle in closedvor locked position. In" some vcases when a especially in the use of pa dlocks 'in connection' with tire carriers luponi automobiles, and; while the form-of myiinvention shown in the drawings is particularly adapted to 'such'use,
it willbe understood thatlthe invention capable of broader application and the prin-.
'ciplesthereof may be used iii-other relations.
Further, in the typeof padlock which5I haw e illustrated asiembodyingmy invention,
the shackle member j WlllCl] islocked to the caseis arranged sothatfitmay be rotated relatively to the case when in lockedposition so thatthelockmay not be destroyed by turning the shackle relatively to the case with "a wrenchor thelike, as is sometimes thecase withpadlocks in common use, i
Oneobject of my invention the of a padlock provided, with a novel form of shackle mechanism whichmaybe inserted-ins to the parts to be lockedjtogether with facility, and at the same time will eflicien-tly lock these parts together in'the desiredjposition. 7 Another object of my invention is to provide a padlock with a shackle member which may be detachably and-adjustably secured to the lock and to provide the lock case with means permanently secured thereto to coprovision of a padlock-havinga pair of oiitheuses contemplated} i be applied to'the members to. be locked together from'one side thereof, and-the detachv able shackle applied from the other side Further objects of nvention arejthei 1; provision of a padlock which maybe simple in'v character and econor'nically made "but which will at the sametime befefie'ctivein use and-which may be easily securedinplace, V I of the'position in iwhichit isto be a regardless used; 7 H e V j 'Tothese and other ends, the invention consists' in the novel 7 features and combination of parts tobe' hereinafter described and, I

of automobiles use several different typesof 1 upon; the rear of their automobiles.
:mechanisms to carry the spare tires, usually I It-will also be understoodthat my improvedpadlock may be used upon practically all of such tire carriers now in use, and thatthe 'particu Y la rforms shown arefmerely illustrative bf 1 the various uses to which thelock maybe put and. are not to be consider ed as showing all In Fig 1 of the drawings I 10 atire carrier or'rack which may be secured in any proper way to the body of anautomobile, upon which rack is mounted; the usual ,tirerim, 11 carrying, the tire l2'. The tire operate with the detachable shackle member; to'prop'e'rly secure the locked-parts together. A still furtherobject of myinven-tion is. the
rack i 10, may be provided'with a: pair of lugs 13 and 14, which are, designed to" engage" or have shown Qat overlap the tire rim 11 to hold it-in place. At-
rthe lower side of the rack 10, is secured an L separate 'but cooperating r shackle members, one of which ispermanentljysecuredflto the lock case and the other of which isdetach shaped bracket l5, having its horizontal porw a up'iwa dly xt i ng'pe '16, her-- jag, therein boltopeninglfi a shackleiopen ing 18 and an open-ended recess 19 upon the ,upper edge.
A clamp or bracket member 20 is pivotally connected to the part 16 of the bracket 15, by means of the bolt 21 passing through the bolt opening 17 and through a registering opening 22 in the part 20. The bracket member 20 is also provided with a shackle opening I 23 designed to register with the opening18,
and with an open-ended notch 24-. in its upper edge designed to register with the notch 19 in the member 16. A depending or rejecting lug 25 is provided at the lower ree end of the bracket member 20, which lug is designed to engage the tire rim when in the position shown in Fig. 2, and co-operate with tion referred to above' For thispurpose,I have provided a lock comprising a case 30 provided with a lock 0 linder 31, in which operates a key barrel 3 2. g cylinder-is also provided with a spring pressed bolt 33 designed "to be operated by anecoentric lug 34 on the key barrel. The specific lock mechanism just described may be of essentially the same character as that shown and described in my co-pending application, Serial No. 6l2,150,filedJanuary 11, 1923.
The lock case is provided with a shackle opening 36 adapted to receive the stem 37 of a shackle, which as illustrated, is in the form of a bolt provided with a head 38. The stem ofthe shackle is provided with a plurality of V from the side opposite that annular shoulders 39 to be engaged by the bolt 33 to: lock the shackle in position in the lock case. ga es the shackle is beveled as shown at 410, an the annular shoulders 39 u' on the stem of the shackle member are beve ed upon one side so that the shackle may be freely inserted into the opening 36 regardless of the position ofthe bolt which is cammed rearwardlyl by the engagement of the beveled faces upon the shackled stem and upon the bolt to permit the reception of the shackled stem in the opening. The stem 37 of the shackle member is designed to be passed through the open.-
ings 18 and 23 and-may be applied thereto upon which the lock case stands.
The lock case is providedwitha second shackle member inthe form of -a post 42, which is permanentlyconnected to the case. As shown, the shackle post may be formed integrally with the lock case and may consist of asubstantially straight post which ex- The end of the bolt 33 which enin the recesses 19 and 24. While these recesses are open at their ends and are formed upon the upper edge of the bracket members 16 and 20, it will, of course, be understood that the post 42 could be inserted just as easily through registering perforations similar to those receiving the shackle stem 37, which maybe used instead of the open-ended recesses. V
As shown in Fig. 5 the lock case is applied at one side of the two bracket members to be locked together, while the stem 37 of the shackle member is inserted through the registering openings from the other side and inserted into the opening 36, where'its shouldered end is engaged by the lock bolt 33. The proper number of annular shoulders are provided upon the shackle stem 37 so that the lock case may be positioned closely against the bracket member 20, regardless of its thickness. I w.
In Figs. 4 and 6 I have shown a somewhat modified form of tire carrier in which a pair of lugs 52 and 53 are pivoted to the ends of the tire rack 54 and co-operate with a lug 55 to hold the tire in place. Tothe 111 s 52 and 53are pivoted links 56'and 57 whic are pivoted together; at 58. The link 56 may be as described in-connection with the other figures of the drawing. The post 42 provided upon the lock case may, in this instance, engage the upper side of the link 56 so as to hold the lock firmly in place and prevent objectionable noise.
While I have shown and described some preferred embodiments of my invention, it will be understood'that it is not to be limited to all the details shown but is capable of modification and variation within the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim issing of a straight headless ost permanently secured to the case and t e other of said members comprising a headed bolt completely detachable from the lock body but adapted to be locked thereto in spaced parallel relation with said first member and on the sameside of the case. p
'2. In combination with a plurality of parts 120 1. In a tire lock, a case, a pair of cooperto be locked together and having aligned openings, a lock case having a pair of members connected thereto, one of said members having a head on one end and being adapted i' to be inserted through the openings from one side of the parts, and the other member being secured to the lock case and adapted to be inserted through the openings from the other side ther'eo 10 a 3. In combination with a pair of members adapted to be locked and having aligned openings, a lock comprising a case,a bolt adapted to be locked to the case and designed to pass through said openings, and means permanently secured to the case adapted to engage said members to prevent rotation of the case relative to the members. r
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 8 day ofFebruary, 1924.
