Thisinvention relates primarily ,to' gar}; ment fasteners; although ltfdvlll serve ade.-, 1'
quately as asecuring means forother. articles.
The primary object of thisinvent-ion is. .to
provide an improved garment: fastener which willserve as a superior substitute for buttonsn {A more specific object is theprovision of a fastening device/- whiohewill standfhard. use" age, and frequent laundering .withou-t impair? ing its utility.
to loss, and breakage especiallyv in instances where garments require laundering. :As in.-. stances. of. these attempts, imetallic fastening. devices, suchassnappers, and hooks and eyes L havebeen used; .'lhe,.us e of these devices haveonly a limited. scope ,a-ndfthey too have proven unsatisfactory as they! are frequent-.

A real need still persistsfor a .ta steningcdee l vice whichwill overcomeallofthe defects of loss, breakage,- and WlBiOlD'ltLt'lOn, resulting; from. the use of .buttons; 1 netallic fasteners,
etc. 1',"
Other more specific objects and advantages will appeal-"from: the following description" of an illustrative embodiment of the present invention.
In the drawlngs;
Figure 1 is a view in elevationof a garment fastener, constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the same in sep-,
arated or open condition. 1
Fig. 2 is a similar vlew showing the fastener n assembled or closed condition.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken upon the.

The garment fastener selected f illustration is shown applied to the adjacent flaps or overlapping portions 10 and 10 of a garment. Adjacent one edge 11 0f the portion 10, one end 12 of a pliable tongue 13, made of suitable woven material, is applied by means of stitching 14 or other suitable means. An elongated head ,16 preferably made of :Eelt or other flexible material, which has been chemically treated, or sized, to stiiien thesame, appliedby stitching 18 intermediate its en to the free end 17 of the tongue 13,- aml forms, in effect, an extension of: said a slot 21 iscutextending'transversely. of the:

As the chemical treatment of the head 16 is of such a natureas to be impervious to water, the stiffness will persist in spite offrequentlaundering. The-remaining I portions of the fastener are of such a nature thatlaundering will inno way harm them. The reinforcing element 22 may be omitted without material defect, by merely finishing the hole with a button hole stitch, and the spacer element 18 which is shown as a separate element may as readily be formed by mu turning the'endll'i'v back upon itself and stitching the head 16 thereto. I
' The foregoing specification described a fastening device which provides a superior substitute for buttons or metallicfastening 105 devices, and is of such a natureas to permit frequent laundering and hard usage without impairingits-eflectiveness. It will also' be noted that the devicemay be so constructed as to afford net only a fastening for lie the garment but also has decorative qualior sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim p 1. In a garment or the like having separa ble portions, the combination of a non-metallic fastener therefor comprising a flexible tongue attached at one end to one of said portions, a flexible elongated head applied engthwise on said tongue, said head having a rearward'ly extending end free from said tongue, and a head receiving opening on said other (portion for coast-ion with the rear end of sai head to lock said portions against accidental separation.
2. In a garment orthe like having separable portions, thecombination of a non-metallic fastener. therefor comprising a flexible tongue attachedatone end to one of said ortions anelongated fabric head applied intermediate its ends to the free end of said ton ue, said head extending lengthwise of sai tongue with its rear end free therefrom and a head receiving opening on said other portion for coaction with the rear end. of said head to lock said portions against accidental separation. p i
3. In a garment or the like having separable portions, the combination of a fastener therefor comprising a flexible tongue attached at one end to one of said portions, an elongatedhead applied lengthwise on said tongue, a spacer element interposed between said head and said tongue, said head having an end extending rearwardly of said spacer element, and a head receiving opening on said other portion for coaction with the rear end of said head to lock said portions against accidental separation.
4. In a garment or the like having separable portions, the combination of a fastener therefor comprising a flexible tongue attached at one end to one of said portions, an elongated head applied to the free end of therefor comprising a flexible tongue attached at one end to one of said'portions, an elongated head applied to the free end of said'tongue to form in effect an extension thereon, a spacer element interposed between said head and said tongue, said head having an end extending rearwardl of said spacer element, said other portions aving a slot extending transversely of the head to receive said head to lock said portions against accidental separation, and an element surrounding the slot and attachedto said other portion to serve as a re-enforcement for the slot.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 22nd day of May, 1928.
