My invention relates to hinges, vand particular-ly Vto pivot hinges of the type adapted to the support of swinging transoms.
i My invention has for .its object the prevision of a hinge, adapted for use with transoms, 'French doors, pivoted windows, and such like constructions, inwhich included a friction device for retarding the free swinging of the transom or window, so that the latter may be conveniently positioned at 'a given amount of opening, and will not be sus ccptible of movement by puffs of air or other minor forces when so positioned. My invent-ion provides a friction device which is incorporated within a. pivot hinge of minimum size, which is readily adjustable, which retains its adjustmentover a prolonged period of time, jand which is simple to mal-ze, and noiseless in operation The device of my invention is easy to install, and when installed hasa long life. It is particularly adapted to use in such locations 'as the windows of hospitals, schools, libraries and hotels, since itis noiseless in operation. It is further particularly desirable, because the window, which is supported by it, may be opened to any Vdesired degree, for any desired amount of ventilation, and when so opened will remain in any adjusted position, as distinguished from the customary click controlled or chain held transoins,l -My invention .further provides a friction brake mechanisniwhich is separate 'and distinct from the journal bearing `Surfaces carrying the weight of the window member, distinguishing' thereby from devices of the prior art intended for similar purposes. By the device of my invention I am thus enabled to provide a simple7 durable, convenient pivot hinge adapted to the support of transoms and such like devices, which is simple to construct, simple to adjust, easy to install, and durable in operation; 1

Then so positioned, the Weight ol' the 'trame is ca rried upon screws through the appropriate openings d and l?. li the plate l is fastened to the casing and the plate 5 to the Window traine, the Weight ot the window is trans erred to the plate 5, and is carried by the journal bearing; in the opening' ll, upon the pivot l5, which in turn carried'by the plate 'l and the Window cas-ingr. The Weight oi the Windowl is thus carried lrecly upon the pivot, and it is free to swing into any desired position.
After being` properly installed, the desired amount of trictional retardation may be im posed upon the swinjing` member by adjustment of the 'friction plate l2, this being' accomplished by movement ot the screws 14. These screws may be turned to the lett and thereby iorce the tapered surface oi the opening in the plate l2 against the tapered por tion or" the pivot l5, and the plate 5 ao'oinst the bossl 8 in the plate l. 'll he desired amount or friction then occurs, divided between t ie surface or the boss 8 in contact with the plate 5, and the tapered surfaces upon the pivot l5 and the opening' in the plate l2. -y this construction the friction is very easily adjusted to anyy desired value, from an amount so great thatvigorous muscular eilort is required to move the supported Window, to an amount which is iiiipeiceptible.
The pivot l5 is desirably made oit brass, and the plate l2 is desirably made ot iron, such as cold rolledsteel, thereby reducing the Wear which occurs after prolonped service. The journal ll' and the face or the boss 8 may, it desired, be lubricated, although such lubrication is not essential either to the operation or long lite or' the. device or' my invention. The construction as disclosed is adapted to easy adjustment, to permanent retention of adjustment, and to long` continued service Without readj ustment. When, however, Wear occurs, as is inevitable Awith any moving object, and the amount of friction falls to an undesirably low value, readjustment is readily and conveniently made by further movement of the screws le. Or if the requirements of service upon the Window change, and more. or less, friction is desired, readjustment is readily made, again by movement of theV screws 14 in the appropriate direction.

The pivot hinge of my device is particularly easy to install, since it requires the cutting Y of but a single mortise. rlvhe mortise may be cut Within the frame of the transom, or Within the casing' or easement in which it is mounted, lt is, however, preferable that the mortise be eut Within the transom or Window trame, since the device is adapted to be made in a Width similar to the standard Width ot Window frames, and the morti se is eccordine'- ly readily made by the use oi saw and chisel. I claim as my invention: j

A hinge device comprising in combina` tion, a pair oi frame plates in irictional en- ,sagement with each other, a pivot forming;` a bearing' to permit .one to turn With respect to the other, a. floating friction plate member and means coactingtherewith to increase the pressure between said frame plates.
2. A hinge device comprising in combination, a pair of frame plate membershaving median openings, a pin positioned within said openings, `attached therein to one of said plates, and forming a journal bearing for the other thereof, and having a conical portion,
of said frame members, having a median tapered opening` cooperating With the tapered portion of said pin, and means comprising lie pressure screws cooperating between said i friction plate and said frame member to produce pressure, and thereby friction between the conical members.
3. A hinge device comprising a pair of frame plates having openings therein, one of said plates having a boss portion formed around said opening, a pivot member fastened in the opening of one of said frame plates and forming a journal bearing for the other frame plate, a friction surface on said pivot, and means comprising a member frictionally engaging with said pivot friction surface for the application of pressure between said frames for producing friction between one of the frame plates and said boss.`
4. A hinge comprising frame members, a cooperating pivot member, and a floating friction bar member cooperating with said pivot for thedevelopment of an adjusted amount of frictional retardation, and means comprising pressure screws cooperating with said friction bar for adjusting said friction member relatively to said pivot to vary the degree of said friction.
5. A hinge comprising a pair of rectangular frame members havingstiifening portions, openings therethrough for attachment to cooperating window `and casing members, a pivot member attached to one thereof and cooperating with the other thereof, a floating friction member enclosed within one of saidl pivot member attached in the opening in one of said frames and cooperating with the opening in the other thereof to form a journal bearing therefor, theaXis of said pivot being perpendicular to the plane of said frames, a fioating friction member positioned between said strengthening members, and cooperating with said pivot, and means comprising pressure screws for the development of an adjusted amount of frictional retardation therebetween. p
7. In a pivot hinge, a friction member, a friction member pivoted thereto and in frictional engagement therewith and threaded means applied to one of said members at a plurality of points eccentric to its pivot for increasing its pressure upon the other member. l
