Application `filed September 1U, 1927 Serial No'. 218,651.
'lfhis invention relates `toV looks and more particularly to types variouslylrnownjas,
keyless or perniutationsk with special refern ence to such locks as are applied to brief cases, satchels, trunks and like containers.
@ne oit the objects or" the present invention is to'proyide va loclr in which a keeper is ad-` justably received at different points Within the loelr easing, the locking bolt being yieldable to permit engagement oi' the keeper when entered under moderate pressure.`
lt is a further feature. toV provide a loch which is substantially secure against intrusion, operable only by persons knowing the combination, the characters ot Which appear on the several dials controlling the unlocking elements. A
Another aiin is to produce a neat and attractive locl coinposed ofi-ew and simple parts all readily amenable to economical and rapid production by ordinary methods.
lfh'ese objects andothers of like nature are attained bythe novel desigin construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and shown `in the accompanying drawing, iorniing a material part oi this disclosure, and in which zf Figure* l isa iront elevational View of an embodiment et the lock, parts being broken away in order to disclose the construction.
, Figure 2 is a loneitudinal sectional View taken on line 2-2 of Tigure l.
Figurey 3 is a y plan View ot the lock casing,
looking from the inner side and showing twoy of the control members engaged therein Figure is atop plan View of the slidable bolt plate indicating the third or central control device as carried by it,
Figure 5 is a plan View of the cover or base plate, looking from the inner side thereof.
rllhrong-hout the several Views the numeral l() designates in general one of the body. Walls o'll the coinainer and ll the cover therefor.
Secured to thecover ll is a keeper plate l2 firmly held by rivets 13, the end of the keeper, adjacent the lock, .being inturned at a right angle to produce aflooped element lll quite et the ordinary type. j y
The loch is composed of a sheet in'etal easing l59 which may be inade in any preferred procasing and adapted to nialre intimate c V23 of the `casing base.Y
file, and'is provided with a circuniainbient flanged edge v16 ornnngthe side Walls o tee with the body Wall l0, as best seen in Fi The rectangular portion oi" the leek @en fa ce, adjacent the keepera provided with a plurality of spaced transverse openings lil; and at'the opposite end is a relatively short longitudinal slot 18. y Y
The base of the casing consists oli a nie a oo plate 20j containing transverse slots fl. in
reoister with the slots 17 and a shoared o ing 22 to' produce fan inturned ktraiiaverse 28,7 thepurpose of Which Will hereai come apparent.
Also in the narrow end oi the similar sheared opening Mythe n'iei shaped to produce a shorter7 inbent l The base is connected to the front the casingfbyrivets 2G,` passing thi propriate openings in the ollset portali and 28 ofthe base and furtherinore,v the .i 2O is bent to present lateral elements 22?, l' with the surface of the odset portion 30, from these elements entend lugs Si. ada@ to be'passed through the niaterialy of tainer and bent theieover, forming secure fastening means in a s iinplenianner. Slidable intermediate the the inner surface l5 of the Vcasing and adjacent si f the plate 20, is a sliding bolt plate hai/ine' e eessed out-er 'end 33 and containing op Sliinto each of which project'loop ener elements 35, bevelled on their outer sir that Whenthe keeper element f thereagainstas toyield andi toenter. f y
The remote end oi the bolty plate con rectangular recess 36, beyond un'. opening 3'? sheared to produce i li Y tioned in register with the corresgondin f l Both lateral edges oi' the bolt 32 e ed midway their length to torni W ele nients'having narrow "eetions 40, the boltplate thereafter being conefaffted as best seen in Figure l.
Rotatahly mounted inthe `Widest portion of the casing element loare a pairet s aced registering studs 42 having lined on their lll@ outer extending ends knurled knobs 43, each bearing a circular row of characters 44, as the numerals shown.
liligidly fixed to the inner extending 'ends oi the studs 42 are discs 45, each containing a single notch 46 adapted, when in register, to receive the lugs ot the locking bolt but at all othei` times the -ends oi the lugs may ridel against the'peripheries of the discs and pres vent unlocking of the container.
The position of the discs are readily ascertained by comparison ot the predetermined numerals with lines 47 on the face oi the casing, the dials being actuated in a manner well understood.
Disposed between the lugs 23 and 38, respectively ot the base and bolt, is a bent iiat spring 48 obviously operating to `yieldably press the bolt plate towards the keeper and into an engaging position.
rEhe bolt plate is normally retracted by another knurled knob 50 bearingcharacters 5l upon its tace, each ot which is registerable with the indented mark 5:2 on ythe casing; this knob is fixed on a stud 53 rotatably mounted on the inner portion of the bolt plate 32, the stud being freely slidable in the slot l@ of the casing and has secured at its inner end a disc 54 containing a single recess 55, receptive ot the lug 25 formed near the end ot the base plate 20L :From the foregoing it will be seen that when the character' bearing knobs 43 and 50 rotated into the position shown'in Figure l, they discs carried by them will be turned cause their notches 46 to register with the lugs 40 ot the locking bolt and enter therein .vhen the knob has been turned to present the recess 55 in the disc 54, and the knob 50 drawn down, carrying with it the bolt plate 32 and releasing the keeper and so long as the several knobs remain in that position it will be possible to enter the keeper loop without diiiiculty, the spring permitting the lock boli to yield in so doing. l
However when the bolt plate is in an advanced or locking position and any one ot the three discs is rotated into another position troni that shown, the bolt plate is held rigidly, retaining the keeper, which may have been selectively entered in any of the several openings 1'?, locking the container in an eiiici mannera i ils changes of construction could be made 'within the scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the foregoing description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
-laving thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters ljatent, is

A lock comprising a casing having one or more transverse and longitudinal slots in its tace, a keeper engageable selectively in the transverse slots, a bolt platehaving bevelled projections to intersect said keeper, saidl plate being slidable in the casing, lateral edgeextensions on said plate having lugs, a character carrying e knob rotatably mounted in said plate to extend through the longitudinal slot in said casing, a notched disc associated with said knob, a projection on said casing entr-able the notch of said disc when said knob is in a predetermined position and the plate drawn in that direction, character carrying knobs rotatable in lsaid casing, and notched discs carried by said knobs rotatable to register with the lugs yon saidplate.'v
. 4. A lock comprising a casing having one or more transverse and longitudinal slots in its tace, a keeper engageable selectively in the transverse slots, a knob rotatable and slidable in the longitudinal slot, a bolty plate slidable in said casing in which said knob is revoluble, a notched disc associated with said knob, a pair of knobs revolublelin said casing, notched discs carried by the last named knobs, a lug on said casing adapted to enter the notch in the slidable disc when alined and actuated by the associated knob, projections on said bolt plate adapted to enter the notches in the discs associated with the paired knobs when alined, and means whereby all oi said discs may be individually positioned to receive their corresponding lugs and projections 'and moved'to prevent entrance thereof.
