EIVKIL EETERS, DIE CREFELD, GERMANY.
DYNAMIC AND EFFICIENCY IVUElTER.
Application filed November I, 192%, Serial No. 598,451, and in Germany November 8, 1921.
My invention relates to counters, more especially for ascertaining and indicating and/or recording any data, for instance the pertormzuice ot a steam engine within a, predetermined time interval.
lit a steam engine, for instance 3. locomotive, were operz'ited continuously at uniform dinission and uniform steam pressure, its pertorn'iance mi ght be measured by counting the strokes of the piston or pistons or the revolutions of the shaft or axle by means of a counter, a recording; device or a combination. of both. in practice, however, the degree of :uhnission and the steam pressure are not u n itoii'in.
Assinning iii-st that the steam pressure is uniiliui'in, it is necessary to ascertain the in iluence oi various degrees of admission on the pm'ilt'ornu'znee during one revolution of the engine, and to operate a coiniter in proportion to this interconnection of degree of admission and performance, so that the counter will in dicate the actual performance at the predeten mined. degree oi" admission.
The means for attaining this object old. in the art, being :1 cam (moi-sting the counter. The cam is controlled by the means tor regulating the degree 0t admission so that u delii'iite position of the cam corresponds to each degree of admission. The performances of the engine at the various degrees of admission are marked on the cam so that for each revolution the performance corresponding to the given degree of adm'ssion is indicated by the counter.
in practice, however, the steam pressure is not I ini'lorm either and this may be considered by designing cums tor a, constant degree oit ailini, ion, and variable .sl'ozun pressures.
iir-cori lijiig to my invention it build up av rotary element which constituted by a set of. can'is, each cam COIlGSPOHCliUg to the performance at a given steam pressure. and l PTOVlKlQ means for adjusting: suid element in accordance with the existing conditions o'li admission and stenn'i pressure.
in a preferred embodiment of my invention in which the (BOHlilT-Ol is adapted. to a. steam engine, for instance a lOCOlliOiflYO, I provide means for rotating the element rrom one oi? the controls of the engine, for instance the gear for regulating its degree of admission, and I provide iii-cans for imparting axial reciprocation to the element from another control oi the engine, tor instance its throi l'lc. Conversely, I may provide means for reciprocating the cam from the throttle and tor rotating it from the control for the degree of admission, Without departing from my inven tion.
In the drawings aflixed to this specification and forming part thereof, a counter embodying my invention is illustrated diagrammatically by way of example as adapted to a locomotive.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is an elevation showing the arrangement of the counter and its accessories in the cab of a locomotive,
2 and 3 are sections on the lines H H and ill-Jill of F 1., respectively, and
Fig. l is a diagram which serves for explaining the theory of the instrument.
Referring now to l, l. is the reversin screw oil: a locomotive, A is the lunckel in which the. screw is carried, l) is the handle ot the screw and O is its reach rod which extends through an opening in the trout wall l) oi the cab.
2 is a. bevel gear at the end of the r yersnur screw, 2 is a bevel which meshes with the gear 2 and is secured on a shaft 3 which is carried in suitable bearings on the lu'aeket A, i is a cum element on the shaft 3 which keyed thereto so as to partake in its rotation, 5 is a double-armed lever which is tulcrumed on a suitable bracketat the wall D an d linked to the Bourdon tube oi a pressure ango t3, 6 is the steam pipe connecting the gauge with it valve chest or the valve chests, not shown. of the locomotive, '7 is a rocking lever, 8 is a roller at its :tront end which is adopted to cooperate with the can] element t, 9 is a sus pension. link by which the lever T is carried on the bracket A, f) is a spring which is at tachcd to the suspensitm link fl at one end and to the upper bearing oi? the shaft 3 at the other so as to hold the roller 8 engaged with. the face of the cam element l, 11 is an eccentric to which rotation imparted from any moving part, for instance the speedometer shaft 12, so that rocking motion about the centre oi? the roller 8 is imparted. to the tel-kshaped end of the lever 7, 1?) is a parallel guide secured to the bracket ii. 14: is a slide blockin the guide, 15, 15 are curved jaws on the block which engage the lever l on either side, 16 is a pawl linked to the slide 14-, and. 1? is a ratchet wheel on a counter 18 which is secured to the bracket A so that its dial is visible to the driver.
Referring now to the diagram, l, a is the constant distance of the longitudinal axis of the slide 1 1 from the eccentric shaft 12 it is the, also constant, stroke of the eccentric 12, y is the variable strolze oil the pawl 16 which corresponds to a given admission and a given steam pressure in the valve chest and may be calculated or plotted from a steam diagram, and m is the variable distance of the axis of the roller 8 from the axis of the slide ll. The distance as is calculated as follows:
Instead of ilotnn the performance oil? a locomotive a st glie steam pressure and i-onfigurati 'c of the cam element 4: accordingly, may also generate the curve h v automatic means. this case, the reeling' lever 7 and the parts cooperating therewith are duplicated in a machine tool and the roller 8 at the end of the lever 7 is replaced by a milling; cutter. The eccentric 1 is staond counter 21 may he provided which is can ried at the end of an angular lever 9. The
lever 19 is tulcrumed to the lataclze" at 20 and is provided with a 56m. wheel or the like 22 by which it is 00111 ,d with and driven by, the counter 18 wh en. the leve 19 is rocked on its pivot correspondinglv. An arm 19' is formed on the suspension link 9 in such a po sition that it causes the two counters 18 and 21 to become connected under the above-men tioned conditions of light load and the output will now he registered sqiai'ately hy the counter 21. Beyond the limit of the said small performance, the counter 21 is automatically released by the arm 19.
Recording means ma he provided in connectien with the gauge 6 and with the pawl 16 so that the performance of the loconnjitive is directly registered instead of locin only indicated by the counters.
It will he understood. that by setting the reversing screw 1 "for a given admission and by opening the throttle valve to a certain extent, a given position will he imparted to the cam element with regard to the roller 8 and the distance of the roller 8 from the eccentric shatt 1&2, a+m in the diagram Fig. 4t, will he adjusted accordii'igly. A given value of m (m-responds to each oi these positions.
3 claim 1. it counter "for ascertaining the performance of a strain engine con'iprising indicatmeans, a rotary cam clement tor operating said means, means connected with the means for regulating the degree oil? admission ot said engine and. adapted to impart rotation to said cam elemenh and a pressure gauge adapted to impart axial reciprocation to said cl em e1 it.
1i, counter for ascertaining the performance of a steam engine compr' no indicating means, a rotary cam element I01 operating said i'nezms a pressu e gauge adapted to impart axial. reciproca n to said cam element, and means connected with the means for regulating); the degree of admission of said en ine and adapted to impart rotation to said cam element.
In testimon whereof I aifiix my signature.
