directly from pulp. so the same will not have to be seamed or in any way joined, but may be made of one i tegral piece of paper or m board and thus ob ain a cup which will .be strong and will not leak; to provide means and method which will enable the cups to be made of'uniform thickness; to provide a method and means by which the cups may be shaped directly from pulp, dehydrated, dried and calendered as one continuous process; to provide for synchronizing the various mechanisms and operations, to secure simplicity of construction andoperation and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description. Referring to the accompanying drawing in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views,
the figure represents the apparatus and method for producing cups and similar articles in accordance with my invention. In the specific embodiment of the invention illustrated in said drawing reference nu erals 1, 2 indicate'mixing tanks having suitable agitators 3, 3 therein by means of which pulp of the desired consistency may be obtained. Both of these mixing tanks have outlets to a common conduit 4 with 25 control valves 5, 6 respectively by which a flow of pulp may be obtained from either mixing tank. In this way, a continuous supply of pulp may be had to conduit 4. Conduit 4 conveys the pulp to a movable 40 reservoir 7.
In order that said reservoir 7 may move up and down, as. by means of ca m 8, the conduit 4 is made telescopic, as at 9, beneath said reservoir. Above the reservoir is positioned a wheel 10 carryin a plurality of perforated female forming dies or molds 11, Wheel 10 travels with a step by step move ment, stopping every timea d'i-fl'erent die is positioned over reservoir 7. A second wheel 17 is mounted. adjacent wheel 10. This second wheel is similar in construction and operation to wheel 10 but instead of the female dies 11, is provided with exteriorly perforated male dies 16 adapted to receive the cups from the forming dies 11. When wheel 10 is stopped, it is arranged that an actuating plunger 15 operates upon the telescopic spindle of one of the forming dies 11 which is in exact opposition to a die 16 onwheel 17. The plunger 15 causes the forming die 11 to place the article on die 16. At this time, suction within die 11 has been cut off and suction is applied within die 16 so that the article being formed from pulp is transferred to die 16. The spindle 14 thereupon retracts and both wheels turn so the next dies come into oppo-' sition. During the period of interchange of the article being formed, the two wheelsmay be locked in exact position by any suitable means such as the fluid control brake 18. Both wheels are furthermore operated in synchronism by any suitable drive such as the shaft and gearing indicated at 19.
Asthe dies 16 approach the top position on wheel 17 they maybe ejected laterally therefrom by any suitable means onto a carrier 20 provided with sockets 21 within which the supports 22 for the dies may be held against displacement while upon the carrier. The die supports-22 are each provided with an external gear 23 and as the die and diesupport are carried along by the carrier said gear comes vin contact with a rack 24 so that continued travel of the carrier causes the die and die support to Whirl. This may be carried on as long as found necessary in order to obtain a suiticient dr ing of the article. c
The die is next carried into a housing 25 while it is still being whirled so that the outside of the article will engage the side of said housing to smooth and calender the article. After this operation it is passed around a wheel to an upside down position and the article will drop off the die. \Vhen the die returns to a position opposite wheel 17 it is again returned to place upon the wheel by a transverse movement and is then ready' to receive another article.
Obviously detail changes and modifications may be made in the construction and use of my invention and I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the details shown and described except as set forth in the following claims as construed in the light of the prior art.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: i
1. An apparatus of the character de scribed comprising synchronized wheels, means for forming an article on dies on one wheel, means for transferring the article from the die on the first wheel to a die on the second wheel,a carrier adapted to receive the said second wheel die and article thereon, and means for whirling said die and article, while on the carrier, for drying,
. calendering and smoothing the article.
' 2. Apparatus for making pulp molded containers comprising the combination of a pair of synchronized die-supportingwheels,
a double-walled die having a foraminous inpartly formed container over the secondreservoir, means for reducing the pressure in the die to form a container therein, a receiving die having a foraminous wall carried by the second wheel, means for moving the first-named die and partly formed container into telescopic relation with the second-named die and withdrawing the firstnanied die, .and means for exhausting the pressure within the second-named die while the two dies are in telescoping position whereby the partly formed container is transferred to the second-named die.
4. Apparatus for making ulp molded containers comprising the comliination of a pair of movable die-supporting carriers, means for moving the carriers step-by-step in synchronism, a plurality of double-walled dies having foraminous inner walls carried by one of the carriers, a reservoir for pulp,
means for elevating the reservoir to immerse one of the dies when the carrier is at rest, means for reducing the pressure in the space between the die walls to form a container Within the die, a die having a foraminous outer face carried by the second carrier, means for moving the first-named die and partly formed container over the secondnamed die and withdrawing the first-named die, and, means for exhausting the pressure within the second-named die while the two dies are in telescoping position whereby the partly formed container is transferred to the second-named die.
