APPARATUS FOR WAVING OR GUBLING THE HAIR.
Application filed Zuly 9, 1925, Serial No. 42,487, and in Great Britain June 18, 1925.
This invention relates to apparatus for waving or curling-the hair by the method known permanent waving.
Such apparatus comprises a number of electric heaters which are suspended from a position above that at which the treatment is to be carried out. Each otthe heaters 1s suspended by a cord or other flexiblememher from a supporting frame, and the weight of the heaters is balanced by passing each cord or flexible-member over a guide pulley and suspending counter-weights from their opposite ends, so that thus the electric heaters may conveniently be brought down from an elevated position into the position of use and their weight balanced in that position, so that the weight of the heaters does not rest upon the head of the person undergoing the treatment, and the heaters are maintained in their position in use without tension be ing applied to the hair in course of treatment.
In such apparatus the cords and counterweights are liable to become entangled, and it is among the objects of the invention to provide simple, convenient and effective means to avoid entanglement.
irccording to the invention the counterweights are adapted to be guided in parallel guide-Ways advantageously provided within a parallel series of juxtaposed tubes, conveniently connected together whereby the heaters are adapted always to be freely. used without liability of entanglement or derangementot the cords and counter-weights.
The invention comprises the construction hereinafter described 1 j The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanyingdrawings in which 7 j Figure l is a plan View of an apparatus constructed according to the present inven-- tion.
Figures 2 and 3 arecorresponding side and rear elevations in which the length of the supporting pillar is interrupted, while Figure 4: indicates in side elevation same apparatus in its full height, and
Figure 5 is a detail plan view on the line 55 Figure 2.
Figure (3 is a clamping wheel. r
In carrying the invention into etiectin its application to the portable apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, I provide a stand comprising a vertically disposedv supporting stand or pillar a conveniently detail sectional view oiithe made ofmetal tubing, and a base ,soclret iitting I) having advantageously a number of radially disposed feet Z) supported at or near their ends on casters, within which socket or base fitting, the lower end of the supporting stand or pillar is mounted; and I provide means by which the supporting pillar maybe vertically adjusted to any desired "height and secured in its adjusted position. Such means may advantageously consist of astud c (Figure 6) secured to the supporting stand-or pillar a. near its lower end, and adapted to extend outwardly through an axial slot F2 in the socket fitting Z), a clamping wheel (Z being mounted on the outer end of the Stud 0 by means of which the supporting stand or pillar a may be tightly clamped in its adjusted positionin the socket fitting Z2. and released when it is desired to change the height of the supportng pillar.
The upper end of the supporting stand or pillar a is conveniently provided with a transversely extending arm a adapted to carry at itsv upper end a supporting member or frame 6. This supporting member or frame 6 may he formed of two concentric rings 6 6 connected together by radially disposed parts e 'and in acent-ral position to a boss e by which the, supporting member or frame 6 is carried at the end, of the arm a Beneath and upon the respective ringse e a set of pulleys f are mountedadvantageously within pivoting brackets, and these pulleys serve to determinethe position at which the heaters g depend from the supporting member or frame 0. The flexible members or cords'h by which the heaters g are respectively carried pass over such pulleys f, and thence over a set of guide pulleys i disposed in series inan adjacent position at orabout the level of the supporting frame 6 whereby the ends of the flexible members or cords are brought into adjacent positions. Thus by reason of the separation of the pulleys Zfrom the pulleys f therespective ends of the flexible members or cords are separated. The guide pulleys 2' may conveniently be mountedupon a support or fitting j secured to the supporting stand or pillar a near its upper end, which support or fitting comprises two arms respectively extending oneach sideof the'standor pillar a and which arms are'each slightly inclined rearwardly, and one half the number of guide pulleys 2' are mounted to depend from one arm and one half from ill.)
the other, and the cords or flexible members it pass over the respective guide pulleys z' and thence vertically downward. At. their lower ends the cords or flexible members it have counter-weights is connected, and these respective counter-weights are adapted to slide within a corresponding series of vertical juxtaposed guideways or tubes Z. The series of guideways or tubes Z may be carried at their respective ends in transversely disposed frame members or fittings m, m which are mounted upon the socket fitting [1, so that thus the fittings m, m and the guideways or tubes Z form an integral part. The respective guideways or tubes Z may be dis posed substantially in alignment with the guide pulleys i, and thus the respective guideways or tubes Z may be mounted in two sets,
one at each side of the socket fitting b; and
the respective end fittings m, m by means of which the guidways or tubes Z are connected at their respective ends, are disposed at an. angle corresponding to the position of the respective arms on which the guide pulleys 2' are carried at the upper end of the supporting pillar.
It will be understood that the leads a may be connected to a plug-box 0 centrally disposed beneath the supporting frame 6, and also carried from the arm a referred to; and that one or other number of heaters 9 may be connected and suspended together from the same cord or flexible member it.
It will also be understood that the invention is not limited to the construction of the guideways, as these may be formed in any desiredmanner without departing from the invention; thus, for example, the guideways may be formed by the juxtaposition of two corrugated metal sheets by which a series of parallel guideways are formed, and themanner of the support of'the guideways upon the supporting pillar may be varied according to particular requirements.
It will be understood that the invention is also of application to apparatus'ofa similar kind that are permanently erected, and in the application to such apparatus it will be understood that the supporting pillar may be dispensed with and the guideways provided and supported in any convenient manner.
