Suitable clearance is provided between ends of the studs 22 and the covers 9 and l0, to permit movements of the cover toward the casing ends due to the compression ofthe gaskets 1l as the covers are drawn against the ends of the casing, and a pair ofanlchorage studs 2 8 are secured inor threaded into the ends of the easing at points between the pockets l 'and 5; The outer ends of these studs are'threaded for the reception of nuts 29 whichl are sufficiently wide to overlap the l pockets 4: and 5 and engage with the 'valve cages and confine them within the pockets. Either valve cage may be removed from the casing through either end thereof by merely first removing the nut 29 at that end of the casing, and both valve cages may be securely clamped in the pockets and also against all movement endwise in such pockets by merely tightening the nuts 29. Thus the valve cages are confined in their pockets entirely independently of the covers 9 and lO of t-he casing, all danger of leakage due to endwise movement or reciprocation of the valve cages in their pockets is avoided, danger of injury to the stud or covers due to impacts is avoided, and all noise eliminated at all speeds of operation of the pump.
The casing is provided with the usual inlet and outlet connections 30, having passages 30 leading separately to the pockets 4t and 5 at points intermediate their ends, as in the prior patent- 'referred to. The operation is the same as in the prior patent referred to,
except that the valve cages may be removed or interchanged at will merely by first removing the nuts 29.
lt will be obvious that various changes in the details which have been herein described and illust-rated in order to explain the nature of the invent-ion may be made by those skilled in the art within the principle and scopev of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
I claim:
l. In a pump or the like, a casing having a plurality of bores from end to end, one of .said bores forming la pump cylinder and another bore a valve pocket, a cover closing each end of the casing and permitting communication between corresponding ends of said bores, said casing having a passage leading to said valve pocket intermediate of its ends, a valve unit disposed in said valve pocket, and means carried by the ends of said casing, engaging with said unit, and confining it within said valve pocket independently of said covers to permit removal of either cover without releasing said unit.
2. In a pump or the like, a casing having a plurality of bores from end to end, one of said bores forming a pump cylinder and another bore a valve pocket7 a cover clos'- ing each end of the casing and permitting communication between corresponding ends of said bores, said casing having a passage leading to said valve pocket intermediate of its ends, a valve unit disposed in said valve pocket., a stud carried by each end of said casing beneath and separate from said covers,-
and means carried by and adjustable along each of said studs and overlying said valve pocket to conline said unit releasahly within its pocket, independently ofthe covers.
3. In a pump or the like, a casing having a plurality of bores extending in a direction endwise therethrough, one bore forming a pump cylinder, two others forming separate valve pockets, a cover for one end of the casing and forming with that enda chamber in communication with 'said pockets and cylinder, valve units mounted in said pockets and removable therefrom through said one end of the casing, and common means carried by said casing to somewhat overlie both of said bores and adjustable into contact with said valve units to tightly confine them within said pockets independently of the cover, and yoperable torelease said units for removal from the pockets.
