COMPRESSOR DRIVE 1VIECHANI$M.
Application filed September My invention relates to internal combustion. engines, more particularly to the twocycle type, and it has for an object to provide a compressor therefor which shall be disposedv laterally of the engine structure and have its cylinder inclined toward the crank shaft of the engine, whereby the piston of the coinpressormay be readily actuated by mechanism connected to a reciprocating part of the engine.
further object of my invention is to pro vide a compressor disposed laterally of an en ginc cylinder and carried by the engine structure in order that the overall length of the engine may be kept at a minimum.
A further object of my invention to provide an engine having a laterally-disposed compressor cylinder whose axis is in a plane transverse and normal to the engine and con taining the axis of one of the engine cylinders, whereby a better balance and operation with less vibration may be secured.
These and other objects are accomplished by my invention will appear from the fol.- V lowing specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, in. which:
The figure .is a verticalsectional view of an engine incorporating my improved compressor arrangement. 7
Referring now to the drawings for a better imderstanding of my invention, 1 show a crank case 10 having suitable bearings for a crank shaft 11, a frame structure 12 resting on the crank case and supporting at its upper end a tubular support 13 for an engine cylinder 14: which secured in place with respect to the top of the tabular support and projects downwardly through openings in the tabular support, this engine structure being of the type disclosed in my application, now Reissue Patent 16,909, Mar. 20, 1928, and assigned to the Bethlehem. Steel Company. The cylinder 14 has a piston 15 arranged therein and the lower portion of the piston is connected to a cross head 16 which fits cross head guides 17 carried by the frame structure 12. The cross head 16 carriesa wrist pin 18 for connecting the cross head to a connecting rod 19 which, at its other end, is connected to a crank portion 20 of the crank shaft 11.
I show a compressor cylinder 22 disposed laterally of an engine cylinder 14 and being supported by a bracket 23 connected to the 1925. Serial No. 58,644.
tabular support 13 and by supporting structure 2% connected to and forming a part of the engine framework structure. The cylinder 22 is inclined with respect to the engine cylinder 1 1 so that its aXis'ext-ends toward the crank shaft 11. The compressor cylinder 22 contains a compressor piston 25 connected to a piston rod 26, the outer end of the latter being connected to a cross head 27, which slides on cross head guides 28 carried by the framework structure 12. The cross head. 27 is pivotally connected to one end of a link 29, the other end of the latter being pivotally connected to a projection or boss extending laterally from the adjacent side of the connecting rod 19.
By having the axes of the cylinders 14; and 22 arranged in the same normal trans verse plane to the engine, not only is the compressor piston and its rod brought into proper position for connection to the connecting rod 19, but also the parts occupy such a position that space is economized, it being unnecessary to provide additional moving parts on the engine for actuating the compressor, and the engine and compressor are better balanced and operate quietly. The projection 30 is arranged at an intermediate point between the ends of the connectin rod 19 with the result that the link 29 is actuated with a practical minimum of oscillation. The cross head 16 moves in a straight line and the crank portion 20 moves in a circle. Points along the connecting rod 19, therefore, describe paths whose limits are a circle and a straight line; and the projection 30 is arranged above the crank portion 20 and has an elliptical path, so that components of motion tending to oscillate the link 29 shall be reduced.
While 1 have shown my invention in but one'form, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited, but is susceptible of various other changes and modifications without departing from the spirit thereof, and I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereupon as are imposed by the prior art or as are specifically set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An internal combustion engine comprising an engine frame, a cylinder carried by the frame, a piston in the cylinder, cross head guides carried by the frame, a cross head connected to one end of the piston and fitting the guides, a crank shaft, a connecting rod pivotally connected to the cross head and to the crank shaft, a compressor cylinder dis posed laterally oi the engine cylinder and inclined toward the crank shaft, guides carried by said frame structure and arranged aarallel to the axis of the compressor c inder, a piston. in the compressor cylinilcr, a piston rod connected to the compressor pi ion, a cross head carried by the outer end of said compressor piston rod and fitting the inclined guides, and a link pivotally connected at one end to the connecting rod between the cross head and crank shaft bearings and pivotally connected at its other end to the cross head of said compressor piston rod.
2. In an internal combustion engine, the combination of an engine frame, a power cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, a crank shaft, a connecting rod for connecting said piston to said crank shaft, a compressor cylinder disposed laterally of said power cylinder and having its axis inclined with respect to the axis of said power cyliinlcr, a piston in said compressor cylinder, cross head QHltlvf; mounted on said frame and arranged pan allcl to the axis of the compressor cylinder, a cross head fitting said guides, a piston rod connected at one end to said conipressmpiss ton and at its other end to said cross head and a link pivotally connected at one end to said cross head and pivotally connected at its other end to said crank sh ai't.
In testimony whereof I hereunto alfix my signature this eighteenth day of September, 1925.
ARTHUR JACKSON WEST.
