This invention relates to a hand operr ble.
tool for cutting in two metallic objects, more particularly for severing metal rods and bolts, by means of an appliance wherein a plurality of cooperating pivoted element-s provide the leverage necessary to enable workmen to sever by hand metallic rods of considerable thickness.
An object of the invention is to provide adjustable means for arresting the cutting movement of the movable jaw i an accuratemanner at a point in predetermined pro imity to the stationary jaw so that the metallic object will be severed and yet the move ment of the cutting element be arrested be fore the cutting edge has been injured by forcible contact with the stationary aw.
By this invention two cooperating adjusting elements are provided, one of said elements being a step by step adjustment and the other element a graduated adjustment. The graduated adjustment provides for accuracy, while the step by step adjustment is brought into use from time to time when the wear upon the cutting element has exceeded the scope of the element for graduated adj ustment.
Other objects and advantages may hereinafter appear.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred form of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the appliance, parts being broken away to contract the view, a fragment of a bolt being; shown in position for having the head out therefrom. In this figure full lines indicate the position of the levers at the beginning of the cutting movement wnile the broken lines indicate their position at the end of such movement.

close contact with the side of said main member 1. At its other side sleeve 5 is secured to the main member 1 by means of screws 6. Said jaw 4; has a cutting edge 7 at its forward end adapted to cooperate with the cutting edge 8 of the stationary jaw. Between the cutting edge 7 and opposite side of jaw 1 is a concavity 40 to allow additional room for the head of the bolt B.
An intermediate lever 8 is pivoted near one of its ends by a pin 9 to the main member 1. Said lever preferably has bifurcated end portions, as shown. It is pivoted by a pin 10 through a slot 10 in lever 8 to the movable jaw i, said pin 10 removably engaging a series of spaced holes 11 through the shank of the movable aw 4 whereby an adjustment may be effected. between said movable jaw and said intermediate lever.
A link 12 is connected by a pivot 13 to the other end of said intermediate lever, spaced holes 14 being provided at that end of said lever to effect an adjustment between said link and said levers. Said link 12 is pivoted to the operating lever 15 by a pivot 16 located near one end of said operating lever, that end of the operating lever being pivoted to the main member 1 by means of a pin 17 Stop screw 18, mounted in lug 19 formed on the main member, provides an accurate adjustment means to stop the handle at the desired point at the end of the cutting movement.
Additional room within the concavity of the stationary jaw is provided by reason of its cutting edge being located at its outer side thus bringing said cutting edge out somewhat beyond alignment with that side of the main member, the cutting edge of the slidable jaw also being located at its outer side in order to cooperate accurately with the cutting edge of the stationary jaw.
In Fig. 4 the jaw 2 is shown with an edge 3 and the. jaw l" is provided with a corresponding edge 7, both these edges extending radially with regard to the concavity of jaw 2 to permit severing of rods at any distance from their ends.
In operation, the pin 13 of the intermediate lever is connected up with the desired hole of the holes 14; in order to secure the proper amount of leverage. The screw 18 is then ad'usted in such a manner that it will arrest the movement ofthe operating lever afterthe I bolt or rodhas been completely or nearly completely severed but before the cutting edges have been brought into complete contact with each other. After the cutting edges have been worn down by use and repeated sharpening, it will become necessary to connect the short end of intermediate lever 8 with one of the holes 11 which is located farther from the cutting edge of the movable jaw, because of the limited extent to which adjustment can be effected by rotating screw 18 against w iich the hand lever 15 abuts. A coarse adjustn'ientis obtained by the pin 10 and holes 11, but a fine adjustment by rotating screw 18. By combining these two adj usting elements a line adjustment through a wide range of movement is secured.
In the description and claims the term rod is generally intended to include bolt, a bolt being regarded as a rod provided with a head.
I claim:
1. In a rod cutter, an elongated main member provided with a hook-shaped cutting jaw at one end, a slidable aw to cooperate with said hook-shaped jaw, a guide for said slidable jaw mounted on said main member, an
intermediate lever pivoted to said main member and having one of its ends adjustably pivoted to said slidable aw, a link pivoted to the other end of said lever, a hand lever pivotally connected near one end with said link, that end of said hand lever being pivotally secured to said main member, and an adjustable stop mounted on said main member to arrest the movement of said hand lever when the cutting elements are in a predetermined proximity to each other.
2. In a rod cutter, an elongated main member provided with a hook-shaped cutting jaw at one end, a slidable jaw to cooperate with said hook-shaped jaw, a guide for said slidable jaw mounted on said main member, an intern'iediate lever pivoted to said main member and having one of its ends adj ustably pivoted to said slidable jaw, a link pivoted to the other end of said lever, hand lever pivotally connected near one end with said link, that end of said hand lever being pivotally secured to said main member, and a screw bolt mounted on said main member near the pivotal connection of said hand lever there with, the head of said screw bolt being adapted to arrest the movement of said hand lever when the cutting elements of the jaws are in predetermined proximity to each other.
