GEORGE OLAUSING, OF PORTSMOUTH, OHIO, ASSIGNOB, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, T VULGAN CORPORATION, OF PORTSMOUTH, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
HEEL-TURNING MACHINE.
Application filed November 14, 1927'. Serial No. 233,163.
My invention relates to a heel turning machine.
It is the object of my invention to provide a heel turning machine with mechanism for obtaining the inclined and vertical positions of the jack on a heel blank holder, which can be positioned and maintained in position as desired, eliminating the tracks and other complicated mechanism previously employed.
Such tracks are difiicult to adjust accurate- 1y, are expensive to build, and due to their wear, make it difficult to maintain an accurate adjustment.
It is my object to provide a simple, cheap and easily adjusted mechanism that may be controlled and operated by a mechanic of ordinary experience.
'lVith the adjustable features of these means for adjusting the inclined and vertical positions of the heel blank holder, all positions desired can be secured without the use of a variety of tracks so that one set of link mechanism will take the place of any number of tracks.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation with a part of the frame in section;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the machine with the heel holder directly in front of the operator;
Figure 3 is a similar view with the heel holder to one side of the machine with aheel blank in position to be dressed on the side thereof by one of the cutting knives.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 constitutes a frame on which is mounted a support 2, such support acting as a carrying mechanism for some of the elements of this heel turning machine. The top ofthe sup port rests upon the table 3.
A belt 4 driven by any suitable source of power engages with apulley 5 on the'vert-ical shaft 6 which carries one of the cutting knives 7. Bearing sleeves 8, 9 and 10 are mounted on the vertical support 2. Adjacent each of the cutting knives is an adjustable guard 11 held in position by a bolt 12 and adapted to be moved when unbolted by the set screw 13. The guard end 14 of the adjust-able guard is adapted to engage with the heel holder.
The support 2 carries a pair of vertically aligned, horizontally disposed sleeves 15 in which are mounted respectively the slides 16 and 17 between the knife shafts 6. The slides 16 and 17,1nay be adjusted in the sleeves 15 and held therein by any suitable means. By using the slides 16' and 17 inthe sleeves 15 the shaft 22may be adjusted in relation to the vertical.
its outer end through which passes a bolt 19. The bolt also passes through an eye 20 held between the jaws 18. This eye is extended into a vertically disposed eye 21 through which passes a shaft 22 carrying the yoke 23. The yoke 23 is provided with a pair of arms 24 having eyes for mounting on the shaft 22 and a second pair of arms 25 with split eyes 26 for receiving and supporting the heel clamping shaft 27.
The lower end of the shaft 22 is provided with a collar 28' which rests on top of a vertically disposed eye 29 which has a horizontally disposed. eye 30 placed between the jaws 31 of the slide 17, the eye 30 and the jaws being aligned by the bolt 32.
The lower end of the shaft 22 carries a sleeve 33 from whichis projected laterally a threaded shaft 34 on which is mounted an adjustable sleeve 35 carrying'a jaw 36 of a link 37. This link is adjustable on the screw 38 with respect to the jaw 39-at the other end thereof. This jaw is mounted upon an adjustable sleeve 40 on the horizontally projecting screw shaft 41 carried on a collar 42 on the lower end of the shaft 27. 1
The sleeve 33 is provided with a jaw 43 that engages with a similar jaw 44 forming a universal joint therewith. Such jaw is mounted on the end of the shaft 45 telescopically mounted for sliding and rotarymotion in a sleeve 46 which carries a jaw 47 forming a universal joint withthe jaw 48 mounted on a vertical shaft 49. This shaft 49 is carried in an overhanging bracket 50 thatis mounted on a dovetailmember 51 that is adapted to be held in laterally adjusted position by a clamping screw 52 in the slide 53. The slide 53 is adapted to be adjusted foreand aft or to and from the operator'on the slide 54 which is controlled by the setscrew 55. The slide 54 is attached to the frame 1 by the bolts 54.
Beneath the bracket 50 mounted on the shaft 49 is an arm 56 carrying an adjustable sleeve 57 which is connected to the jaw 58 on the screw shaft 59 which is telescopically and adjustably mounted within the sleeve 60 .60 The slide 16 is provided with a jaw 18 at which alsocarries at its other end a screw shaft 61 which earries'a jaw 62 at its outer end pivotally engaging at 63 with an arm 64 extending from the bottom of the heel supofthe upper heel clamp 7 01 The pivotal position of the lever 68 is adjusted by the setting mechanism and adjusting screw 71. The heel blank 72 is clamped between the upper clamp 70 and the lower clamp 7 3.
The heel block 65 is pivotally mounted at 7 1 to the swivel block 75 which is mounted on the upper end of the shaft 27 The exact horiz ontal position or position with respect to the horizontal of the heel block 65 and the heel which is clamped thereon is determined by the length of distance between the adjustable sleeve 57 and-the pivotal connection 63. This adjustment is effected by the setting of the shafts 59 and 61 within the sleeve 60. This effects the adjustment of the heel block to the horizontal. The bracket is swivelly mounted in the slide 51. The vertical adjustment of the heel block is accommodated by the split eyes 26 and by the adjustment of the shafts 37 and 38 within the sleeve 88 The movement of the sleeves 35 and 40 on the screw pins 34 and 41 provide for the relative distance in height and lateral position between the respective members to which they are attached. It may be desirable to adjust the position of the pins 34 and 41 so that they I Will not lie in the same vertical plane. This adjustment between them permits of this arrangement.
Method 0 f operation.
The knives 7 are driven rapidly by the belt 4'. It is desired to move the heel blank 72 into engagement with the knives and to rotate the heel blank giving the proper combined curvature characteristic of heels particularly for, womens shoes. I
The angularity of the heel block with respect to the knife is determined as hereinbefore explained by the distance between the sleeve 57 and the pivotal connection 63.
The heel itself has already been clamped on theheel block by the heel clamp lever 68 through the jaws 70 and 73. The tilting of the heel block takes place about the pivotal point 74 on the swivel block 75. The vertical adjustment of the heel block is effected through the shaft 27 about which the heel block pivots or with whichit moves. H N
If it is desired to make a lateral adjustment ions with respect to the horizontal of the heel block 65 and in these different positions as it moves with the shaft 27 or moves with the bracket 23 about the shaft 22.
It will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions and uses.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: a
